We are proud to release the official stamp issue to mark the Commonwealth Games in Queensland. You’ll find the official stamp design and associated products outlined on page 14.

Details of the 2018 Australia Post Australian Legends can be found on page 4. The stamp issue was released on 18 January and features some household names of the small screen. Each Legend continues to charm and entertain Australian audiences through their unique style of performance.

This edition also introduces some food labels to which we can all relate. Vintage Jam Labels is a colourful stamp issue that looks back on the era of tinned jam production in Australia and the use of beautiful labelling to market these products.

Two stamp releases in March feature fauna from Australia and the Australian Antarctic Territory. The first of these represents four of Australia’s 19 species of finch.

These small birds with their distinct markings can be found in various habitats, with the Zebra Finch found across most of Australia. The second features the Crabeater Seal, the most numerous of the seal species found in the Antarctic. The four stamps illustrate aspects and behaviours of these fascinating animals.

The fifth and final stamp issue in the series titled A Century of Service focuses on the commemoration of Australian service personnel through war memorials. The stamps show national and overseas war memorials, and these represent the similar places of memorialisation that can be found in our major cities and in suburbs and country towns.

In April we celebrate the Queen’s 92nd birthday with the annual Queen’s Birthday issue. Also for release in April is the Norfolk Island Wrasses stamp issue, featuring a selection of these brilliantly coloured fish.

Like the labels pasted onto fruit boxes, jam tin labels are a nostalgic and highly collectable form of ephemera.

George Peacock (1824–1900) set up a small factory in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1861. This is considered the start of commercial jam production in Australia on a factory scale. It was at Peacock’s factory where a young Henry Jones (1862-1926) got a job, aged 12, on the factory floor. “Jam Tin Jones” went on to develop his famous “IXL” brand.

Over in Houghton, South Australia, George McEwin (1815–1885) founded a jam factory, in 1863, making use of his own orchard’s excess fruit and much of the fruit of the region. His many popular

brands included Glen Ewin and Kingurli.

Grocers, buyers groups and co-operatives also sold their own brand of jam such as the CWS brand of the NSW Cooperative Wholesale Society, Moran and Cato, and Melray.

Food-producing states were dotted with smaller-scale jam manufacturers. Alva Jams was a popular brand, set up by W H Johnson Jams Pty Ltd of Melbourne. It was eventually taken over by Henry Jones IXL (itself taken over by Elders) during the 1970s, a period of industry-wide decline.

Australia has 19 species of this grouping of small bird, including mannikins and firetails, and this stamp issue features just four.

As its name suggests, the Blue-faced Parrot-Finch (Erythrura trichroa) is distinctive in appearance. Juveniles do not have the blue face and only an inkling of what will develop into the scarlet rump and tail areas of adult birds.

The Double-barred Finch (Taeniopygia bichenovii) takes its name from the two narrow black bands across its white chest, the top band encircling much of its face.

The brightly coloured Star Finch (Neochmia ruficauda) exhibits much individual variation in its plumage. Although it is coloured mainly olive green with a scarlet face and white spots on its underparts and tail coverts, both the scarlet and the spots can vary. The Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata) is named for the adult male’s finely barred black-and-white chest and more heavily barred tail. It also has a conspicuous orange ear patch below a blue-grey brow, and a bright orange beak .This species is by far the most numerous finch in Australia.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018), which will take place 4–15 April, will be the fifth occasion Australia has played host to the “Friendly Games”. The first Australian Games was in Sydney in 1938, followed by Perth in 1962, Brisbane in 1982 and Melbourne in 2006.

The very first Commonwealth Games (then known as the British Empire Games) was held in Canada in 1930. The number of sports has grown over the years. The first Games included six sports; in 2018 there will be 18 sports and seven para-sports

contested. Sports include Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Triathlon, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

Para-sports include Athletics, Swimming, Lawn Bowls, Powerlifting, Track Cycling, Table Tennis and Triathlon. GC2018 will set a new Commonwealth Games record by hosting up to 300 para-athletes and 38 medal events across these seven sports.

CRABEATER SEALISSUE DATE 27 MARCH 2018 • POSTMARK FINAL ARTWORK

DESIGN MANAGER (after FA sign off) Date

This stamp issue focuses on the Crabeater Seal (Lobodon carcinophaga), which is thought to be the most numerous of the six seal species found in Antarctica. It has a circumpolar distribution and is largely restricted to the pack-ice zone of Antarctica, which fluctuates in area as the pack-ice expands and contracts with the seasons. While it has been observed congregating in large groups, the Crabeater Seal is more commonly observed in groups of around three or as a solitary animal, partly the result of it

occupying floating pack-ice, which can break into smaller floes.

The four stamps in this issue illustrate some aspects and behaviours of the Crabeater Seal: the female gives birth to a single pup each spring, which it raises alone; the species is generally a solitary animal or congregates in small groups; and while it is ungainly on ice, the Crabeater has great skill in the water. It can dive to around 600 metres and for periods of about 25 minutes.

War Memorials is the fifth and final stamp issue in the Century of Service series. Each issue focuses on a different theme related to Australian experience of war across the last century. This issue looks at memorials both in Australia and internationally and indicates the various forms these memorials take.

War memorials sprang up across Australia following the huge losses sustained in WWI, driven in part because people could not visit the gravesites of their dead. Many public memorials were located in prominent and accessible locations and quickly became

the focus for Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services.

Australian states and territories have a principal memorial that serves as a permanent shrine for major commemorative ceremonies and there are also memorials throughout regional areas of the country.

A number of war memorials dedicated to Australian losses in war can be found in other countries, including at Gallipoli in Turkey, Passchendaele in Belgium, Fromelles and Villers-Bretonneux in France, in Papua New Guinea, in Thailand and in other parts of the globe where Australian forces have served.

Queen'sBirthday

1971142Minisheet (with foiled and embossed rose feature)$4

In 2018, we mark the 92nd birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with two designs that feature a floral theme. On the domestic-rate stamp, the Queen is pictured during her 90th birthday celebrations in April 2016. The Queen was photographed arriving to open the Alexandra Gardens Bandstand, in Windsor, as part of a day of visits with Prince Philip. On the international-rate stamp, the Queen is attending

a 2015 service to mark Commonwealth Day – the celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The domestic stamp also features a close-up photograph of the 'Queen Elizabeth’ (also known as ‘Queen of England’) – a tall grandiflora roseintroduced in 1954. The Queen Elizabeth rose was named to recognise the Queen’s ascension to the British throne in 1952 and subsequent coronation in 1953.

Norfolk IslandNSW 2899

The reef at Emily Bay, Norfolk Island is a popular spot for snorkelling, due to its clear water and an abundance of fish species.

The most predominant in terms of individual species are wrasses (Labridae) – a large and often brightly coloured family of fish that inhabit coral reefs and other temperate waters.

As each wrasse species has differing colour patterns across

male, female and (sometimes) juveniles, from 17 species in the reef there are almost 50 spectacular colour variations.

The stamps in this issue, illustrated by renowned painter, naturalist and zoologist Roger Swainston, feature the vividly coloured adult male Surge Wrasse (Thalassoma purpureum) and the striking orange-red Luculent Wrasse (Pseudolabrus luculentus).

The minisheet scene contains a collection of colourful wrasse species, commonly found in the reef.
