THE ARENA AWAITS YOU

Page 4: Stagen 2015 Course Catalog

Welcome to our first-ever course catalog. It’s been years in the making, not because it was difficult to publish, but because we had to grow into it. The Stagen Leadership Academy was founded in 1999 by my partners Rand Stagen and Brett Thomas. Two wildly passionate guys who genuinely believed that they could positively change the world by helping leaders realize their full potential.

The early days were fueled by an intoxicating blend of idealism and sheer determination. And while deeply fulfilling, entrepreneurial passion alone was not enough to create a viable business. Eventually, our focus shifted to building a profitable and sustainable platform. One very tangible result of this shift is our very own training center featured in the pages of this catalog.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the move into our new facility coincided with a return to our more idealistic roots. We are increasingly clear about the work we feel called to do in the world: to engage and train leaders who are committed to the inspiring, and often messy, journey of deep inner work and long-term personal development.

The growing list of exemplary leaders and companies that have trained with us, have convinced us that we—all of us—can work together to positively impact the world and that business can indeed be a force for good. This dedication to making a difference helps keep us all in touch with the words of the anthropologist Margaret Mead, true to the spirit on which the Academy was founded 15 years ago, and true to the aspirations of our growing community today:

Regards,

RICK VOIRINCHAIRMAN

“TO BE WHAT WE ARE, AND TO BECOME WHAT WE ARE CAPABLE OF BECOMING, IS THE ONLY END OF LIFE.”

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

OUR PURPOSE

We exist to help business be a force for good.

OUR BUSINESS

The Stagen Leadership Academy was established in 1999. We train leaders who are committed to long-term personal development and using their organizational platforms for positive impact. Our members have access to a training facility in Dallas, Texas, an online library of proprietary content and tools, and a faculty of psychologists, executive coaches, and experienced general management professionals.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

In 387 BC, Plato established the first university in the Western world—he called it the “Academy.” He based it on the notion that each person has the potential for greatness born of self-knowledge. Inspired by this classical Greek approach, our training programs are designed to expand a leader’s capacity for self-awareness, intentionality, and influence.

OUR PURPOSE, OUR BUSINESS, OUR PHILOSOPHYOUR PURPOSE, OUR BUSINESS, OUR PHILOSOPHY | 32 |

Page 6: Stagen 2015 Course Catalog

The Stagen Leadership Academy is located on the edge of downtown Dallas in the Turtle Creek neighborhood. Our building sits on the Katy Trail and each of our training rooms looks onto the natural landscape of Dallas’ premier running and biking trail. Our multipurpose facility adapts for a variety of internal Stagen programs and is made available to our members for retreats, meetings, and special events. Our large training room (“Athena”) is complemented by a mid-sized boardroom (“Koso”) and a collaboration room (“Apollo”). The community foyer space is an ideal gathering spot to connect with Stagen faculty and Academy members visiting from around North America. Our vision is to provide an experience that reflects our commitment to community, learning, and hospitality.

ILP OVERVIEW

ILP OVERVIEW

In today’s marketplace, the key to unlocking next-level performance is leader effectiveness. Each year, you invest time and capital in enhancing sales and marketing, operations, and technology.

W H AT A R E Y O U D O I N G T H I S Y E A R A B O U T Y O U RL E A D E R S H I P D E V E L O P M E N T ?

Any failure to perform in business is ultimately a failure of leadership. In times of increased competition and marketplace complexity, organizations with the best leaders come out on top. That’s why integral leadership practices are being embraced by many of today’s top-performing companies, including Zappos, LinkedIn, Whole Foods, Google, and others.

Finally, a comprehensive leadership development solution. Simply reading books and attending workshops does not measurably improve leadership performance. To achieve next-level success, a leader must have access to a comprehensive framework and an accountability system that drives sustained results and integration. The Integral Leadership Program (ILP) is a one-of-a-kind training, coaching, and support system that overcomes the limitations of conventional approaches to executive education. Drawing on the work of leading researchers, academics, and subject matter experts, the Stagen Leadership Academy has aggregated hundreds of books, articles, theoretical frameworks, and best practices into a world-class curriculum that represents the latest thinking available. Our proprietary methodology seamlessly blends in-person quarterly workshops, self-directed learning modules (print, interactive, audio, and video), one-on-one executive coaching, convenient phone-based teleclasses, e-learning, online accountability software, and actionable tools.

GREATNESS IS NOT A FUNCTION OF CIRCUMSTANCE. GREATNESS, IT TURNS OUT, IS LARGELY A MATTER OF CONSCIOUS CHOICE, AND DISCIPLINE.

– Jim Collins

ACADEMY MEMBER TESTIMONIALS

“The Stagen ILP opened me to the concept of ‘beginner’s mind,’ which became my leadership mantra. From this mindset, I developed the capacity to better understand those around me and to generate results far greater than anything I could have imagined.”

KEN ADAMS, MDCOOSkilled Rehab SpecialistsMember since 2006

“The Stagen program unlocked my potential. I gained surprising clarity around what matters most to me. I learned how to open up more, share more, learn more, love more, commit more, let go more, and create more.”

RAFF VITONPartner and PresidentMaddock DouglasMember since 2009

“The Stagen ILP was a life changer for me. I signed up for the program not knowing exactly what I was in for. The practical benefits of the ILP far exceeded my expectations. But more importantly, the program helped me begin the journey of finding meaning in my life.”

ERIC BENNETTExecutive DirectorBrain Performance InstituteMember since 2004

MARC ROTHFormer President

“The ILP changed my life forever by helping me become aware of how my behavior is ‘in’ or ‘out’ of alignment with my core values. This shift has empowered me to continually grow as a father, husband, son, friend, leader, mentor, and fellow human being. The program truly turned out to be a transformative experience both personally and professionally.”

VERONICA LONDONOCOOAmerican LeatherMember since 2010

“When anyone asks me about Stagen, I tell them that I see my life ‘before the ILP’ and ‘after the ILP.’ Before the ILP, my life was out of balance, I was single, and I couldn’t run a mile. After the ILP, I’m in balance, I’m married with a beautiful daughter, and I have become a marathoner and tri-athlete. I finally found my path and my journey is only beginning.”

CHRISTOPHER CROW, MDPresident

Village Health PartnersMember since 2012

“The ILP was transformational and helped me get in touch with my deeper purpose. The one-on-one coaching provided the challenge and support I needed to shift out of my own fear, take responsibility, and use the gifts I have been given to make a difference. The post-ILP coaching and electives have been equally powerful, and I truly feel like I have found a community that I can learn with for years to come.”

“Stagen forced me to look in the mirror and see myself for who I really am (was). The ILP helped me dig deeper to discover that I have so much more potential to positively affect the world. My life, and those around me, will never be the same.”

RICK SAPIOCEO

Mutual Capital Alliance, Inc.Member since 2002

“Why would a busy business person choose to complete the Stagen Integral Leadership Program (ILP) three separate times over a 5-year period, and then stay active in the community? For me, it’s about fine-tuning my capabilities as a leader and engaging the accountability of the ILP, which is missing from other programs. The value far exceeds the price of admission.”

PLAYING THE LONG GAME Per the map below, our members represent a broad geography spanning across North America. Hundreds of companies, dozens of industries, thousands of employees. Within all this diversity lies one unifying principle: a commitment to playing the long game. In a world consumed with exit strategies and short-term thinking, our members differentiate themselves by embracing the power of what’s possible through time. It is our commitment at Stagen to attract the rare breed of leader who envisions the work to be done over a period of 10, 20, even 30 years. Those who think in decades, not years. Conscious Capitalists who recognize the power of indefinite time horizons and who feel called to use their organizational platforms for long-term positive impact.

CONVERSATIONS WITH MASTERS

Our Conversations with Masters Teleseries is designed to expose members who have completed the ILP to inspiring thought leaders from multiple disciplines. Each quarter, we offer 90-minute calls using a highly interactive phone-based technology to promote Q&A and small group breakouts. All calls are recorded and made available to all active members as part of our evolving archive of interviews.

BOB ANDERSON | Thursday, October 22, 2015 10-11:30 AM CSTBob’s involvement in leadership began in college where his love for statistics and economics helped to highlight his ability to take complex ideas and simplify them. He created methods for leadership development that are powerful, tangible, and accessible. Early in his career, he was fortunate to have had Peter Block as his mentor and has since worked with the nation’s top companies. Bob’s thinking is around recognizing that leadership is a process of transformation to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, the world, and our relationship to others.

JEAN HOUSTON | Thursday, January 29, 2015 10-11:30 AM CSTJean Houston, Ph.D., scholar, philosopher and researcher in Human Capacities, is one of the foremost visionary thinkers and doers of our time. She is long regarded as one of the principal founders of the Human Potential Movement. Dr. Houston has authored 26 books and has been advising leaders across the social, political, and business landscape for decades. Buckminster Fuller’s words say it all: “Jean Houston’s mind should be considered a national treasure.”

BILL TOBERT | Thursday, April 23, 2015 10-11:30 AM CSTBill’s passion lies in the application of integral and transformational concepts in leadership and organizations. He has worked with dozens of companies, nonprofits, and governmental agencies, and has served on numerous boards. After teaching at Yale, Southern Methodist University, and Harvard, he went on to serve as the Graduate Dean of the School of Management for nine years and director of the Ph.D. program in organizational transformation at Boston College.

RAJ SISODIA | Tuesday, July 21, 2015 10-11:30 AM CSTRaj Sisodia is co-founder and co-chairman in the global movement of Conscious Capitalism. MEMBER REUNION

There are three events every year I know I’m not missing: Christmas morning with my family, the Super Bowl with my friends, and the Stagen Member Reunion with my community. No matter who I spend time with or who speaks, the reunion is always a highlight of my year, and I leave challenged, refreshed, and fired up and ready to get after it.

MEMBER REUNION

Every December, our members have the opportunity to reconnect with their ILP classmates, engage with the broader community, and spend a day expanding their perspectives on leadership. The day includes several 5- to 10-minute keynotes delivered by members, experiential activities, and free time to inspire learning and foster connections. The December timing of the event also provides an ideal forum for annual reflection and visioning for the upcoming year. The Member Reunion is included with an active membership and our members have ranked this as one of the highest valued offerings of the year.

QUARTERLY WORKSHOP SERIES

The Quarterly Workshop Series (QWS) is the ideal elective for members wanting to stay connected to their ILP experience. Four in-person workshops per year, held at the Academy, are designed to drill and repeat ILP concepts and tools. No pre-work, no post-work, no structure in between workshops. The QWS helps members keep core content top of mind and reinforces ongoing practices within a manageable quarterly accountability rhythm. Participants, who represent classes going back to 2001, are provided with one piece of bonus content during each workshop.

Similar to the ILP, coaching sessions occur by phone every other week and email support is provided in between calls. In some cases, 360 assessments or more advanced post-ILP tools are utilized.

ELECTIVES

ELECTIVES

Once a member has completed the ILP, he/she is invited to explore a growing number of ongoing electives. Typically ranging from six months to one year in length, electives are designed to build upon the foundation of the ILP. While some offerings are class and date specific, others can be customized and delivered exclusively for leaders and employees within a members’ organization.

LINEAGE

Since 1999, the Stagen community has grown as a result of members nominating others who share a commitment to long-term personal development and using organizational platforms for positive impact. The result is an emerging lineage of leaders who share the experience of our Integral Leadership Program (ILP) and lifetime membership in the Stagen Leadership Academy. The cascading impact than can happen through time is illustrated below through Scott Canon’s lineage.

TEN EFFECTIVE MEETING TIPS

DON’T MEETConsider this: Don’t meet. Ask yourself, “Is this meeting really necessary? Can we accomplish the same objectives through email updates and then use regular rhythm meetings (see below) for necessary collaboration and problem solving?”

THE WAY YOU SHOW UP IN MEETINGS MATTERSAs a leader, your actions set the tone. Employees notice, your example spreads, and cultural habits get set. Consider every meeting an opportunity to “walk the talk” around meeting effectiveness.

INSTITUTIONALIZE RHYTHM MEETINGSAt times, ad hoc meetings are necessary. However, the most effective leaders strive to have 90 percent of internal meetings on a regular recurring rhythm. These “structural meetings” are purposeful, recur on the same day and time, and include a consistent group of attendees. Others can be invited to join on an as-needed basis.

DON’T SCRAMBLECommunicate the purpose and objectives of the meeting in advance and ensure attendees understand what preparation is expected. Use a written agenda, keep the meeting on track, and drive to results.

SCHEDULE 50-MINUTE MEETINGS AND START AND END ON TIMESchedule 50-minute meetings within a 60-minute time block. Start and end on time, thus allowing for restroom breaks and on-time transitions to the next hour of meetings.

USE GROUND RULESGround rules are basic, agreed upon guidelines that help attendees orient to meeting intentions and boundaries. Examples: phones off and laptops down, everyone participates, OK to call a time out, etc.

START EVERY MEETING WITH A CHECK-INLeading effective meetings is both a science and an art. Do a quick check-in with attendees to identify if anyone is distracted, not feeling well, or stressed. Empathizing with others can positively impact the group dynamic and improve the productivity of the meeting.

DOCUMENT DECISIONS AND ACTION ITEMSCapture and date key decisions for ongoing reference to minimize future confusion and/or conflict. Ensure execution accountability by documenting all committed action items and assigning them to a person with a deliverable date. CAPTURE OPEN LOOPS AND PARKING LOT ITEMS Keep your meetings on track by capturing a running list of open loops (issues to be resolved before the close of the meeting) and parking lots items (issues outside the scope of the current meeting that need to be addressed in future meetings).

IMPLEMENT A CLOSING PRACTICEReserving five minutes at the end of every meeting for a closing practice can deepen relationships and boost morale. Invite attendees to “check out,” share a take-away, or even offer appreciations to others in the meeting.

TEN INSIGHTS FOR MEDITATION

DECIDE HOW LONG YOU WANT TO MEDITATEBegin with sessions between 5 and 20 minutes in length. Practice daily, even if for only 5 minutes. Continuity matters.

FIND A SUITABLE ENVIRONMENTFind a quiet environment where you feel suitably free from distraction and interruption.

CLARIFY YOUR INTENTIONSWhen beginning a session, clarify and commit to your intention for practicing this meditation. Generate your intention from your own kind heart.

POSITION YOUR BODYSit in whatever position suits you best (chair or meditation cushion), relaxed and alert, with a straight spine.

RELAX YOUR EYESGently close your eyes and then open them just enough for your vision not to be blurred. Gaze gently forward and then down at roughly a 45 degree angle.

FOCUS ON YOUR BREATH Relax your breathing, allowing it to be gentle and natural. Inhale and exhale through your nose as you guide your breath into your belly. Your belly will then expand and release with your inhalations and exhalations. Let it expand as you inhale and release as you exhale.

FEEL YOUR BODYRecognize and attend to your breathing by feeling its movements through your body. This awareness and experience of breathing is your anchor to being present. This meditation can be summed up as the vivid experiencing of present bodily sensations and the clear observation of mental process. Attend to both (body and mind) with an attitude of non-distracted, non-reactive care and curiosity.

OBSERVE YOUR THOUGHTSObserve whatever you experience with an attentive attitude of care and curiosity. As you observe these thoughts and feelings, relax your tendency to resist them, retain them, or react to them in any way. Allow thoughts and feelings to come and go, come and go. Thoughts and emotions are not the problem, and getting rid of them is not the solution.

VID DEVAReligious Scholar

Stagen Faculty since 2008

Without awareness, our life is driven by habit and reactivity. With awareness of our habits and reactivity, we develop the capacity for genuine choice. This choice establishes our life on the foundation of responsibility and freedom. Your responsibility is to be the craftsman of the one life that is truly yours to live.

RETURN TO THE PRESENT MOMENT When you recognize your attention has wandered and/or become lost in distraction, then refocus again on your breath and bodily sensation in order to return to present moment awareness. Attend to whatever you experience with both a non-judgmental care and compassionate curiosity. This is especially important when you experience confusion, discouragement, or anxiety.

ENHANCE YOUR PRACTICE THROUGH TIMEKeep your meditation practice simple and natural. Don’t make it complicated. When upset, don’t avoid sitting. Hard as it may be, it is crucial to sit when difficulties arise. Our practice is about our life, and we practice forever. No one is able to finish this practice, and no one is exempt from its need. Continuity matters.

The ego’s primary job is to convince us of our separateness. A metta meditation is a powerful practice for moving beyond identification with our egocentric self (“me”) to an identification with “us” and ultimately to “all of us.” This practice is meant to cultivate loving kindness and compassion for self and others. Use the four phrases in each group provided below to silently express your intentions in a heartfelt way. Feel free to repeat sections before moving on. You can also consider exploring variations for the recipients of your metta mediation.

May I be filled with love and kindness.

May I be peaceful and at ease.

May I be free of suffering.

May I be happy.

.....

May my family, friends, and co-workers be filled with love and kindness.

May my family, friends, and co-workers be peaceful and at ease.

May my family, friends, and co-workers be free of suffering.

May my family, friends, and co-workers be happy.

.....

May all people be filled with love and kindness.

May all people be peaceful and at ease.

May all people be free of suffering.

May all people be happy.

METTA MEDITATION

Each move represents one’s identity, moving from an identification merely with “me” (egocentric) to an identification with “us” (ethnocentric), to an identification with “all of us” (worldcentric).

METTA MEDITATION

One of the core attributes of leaders who are members of the Stagen community is a commitment to caring about more than themselves. This progression to move beyond individual needs (“me”) to consider the needs of family, friends, and co-workers (“us”), and ultimately to consider the needs of every person in the world (“all of us”) represents an expanding shift in identity. This shift reflects the capacity for perspective-taking, thus enabling leaders to more fully understand reality as it is experienced by others. Ultimately, a leader can develop the versatility to shift between perspectives in an effort to better understand, motivate, and influence others.

SENTENCE STEM COMPLETION EXERCISE

What I’m willing to be here is …One of the deepest insights I’ve ever had is …One of the ways I underestimate myself is …What I’m appreciating about you now is …What I’d most like to say right now is …One of the greatest compliments I’ve ever received is … In approximately three words, my philosophy of life is …What I’ve learned from you is …What I want to say before we end is …

START THE SECOND ROUND- Ring the bell, ask for silence, and repeat the instructions about the importance of staying with the structure.- Remind the groups to keep their answers to a single sentence (which may only be a few words).- Explain that the second stem starts with the person clockwise to the person who finished the last sentence stem.- Reiterate that each person should say the stem out loud and then complete the sentence in their own words. Invite the audience to notice the energy of the experience and keep momentum in each round. - Encourage your audience to pay close attention to what their group members are saying while, at the same time, being mindful of what they are sharing when it is their turn.- Ask the audience to take another deep breath. Read the second stem twice and the start the second round.

CONTINUE ADDITIONAL ROUNDS- Feel free to walk around during each round in an effort to connect with your audience. Pay close attention to the energy in the room and start each new round from wherever you find yourself at the end of a round.- Ring the bell, ask for silence, and reiterate the clockwise flow.- At this stage, groups will likely have traction with the process and should only be given additional stems (always reading twice) with each round. - As the facilitator, you can extend the time of rounds for stems that promote vulnerability, customize the order of stems, and even skip stems that might not feel appropriate for the audience. - Continue for up to 45 minutes using your judgment on the most suitable stems for closing the exercise.

SENTENCE STEM COMPLETION EXERCISE42 |

Right now I’m feeling …I’m happiest when …The emotion I find most difficult to control is …When I think about the future, I see myself …When I’m in a new group, I ...When I enter a roomful of new people, I usually feel …When I’m feeling anxious in a new situation, I usually …I regret …What I’d like you to know about me is …

SENTENCE STEM COMPLETION EXERCISE

As a student of Ayn Rand, Nathaniel Brandon understood two important paradoxical principles. First, in expressing heartfelt feeling, sometimes “less is more.” Second, defined limits can often represent a “liberating structure.” Brandon’s Sentence Stem Completion Exercise invites individuals to explore authentic expression beyond their usual comfort zones, creating at once a safe and risky environment for exploration.

P L A N N I N G F O R T H E E X E R C I S E- This exercise is best suited for extended meetings or retreats to foster intimacy and deepen relationships.- Ideally, 30 to 45 minutes is allotted for this exercise. 15 minutes is a suggested minimum.- The Zenergy Chime—Solo, Mini—is highly recommended for changing rounds. It can be purchased at www.chimes.com

FA C I L I T AT I N G T H E E X E R C I S ETAKE COMMAND OF THE ROOM- Communicate the objective of the exercise. Clarify the amount of time that has been allotted and invite your audience to relax and engage in this exercise as a way to more meaningfully connect with others in the room.

BREAK THE AUDIENCE INTO SMALL GROUPS- Arrange participants into groups of three to six and have each group sit in a circle facing each other (free from tables or furniture). Clarify that there should be no side conversations or crosstalk during the exercise.

PROVIDE INITIAL INSTRUCTIONS- Have each small group identify a member who will go first; have that person raise his/her hand. - Explain that you are going to provide a sentence stem and that the first person in the group should repeat the stem and complete the sentence in their own words. - Illustrate with the following example: “I’m most engaged when (pause) ... I feel challenged.” - Explain that once the first person has completed the sentence stem, each member in the group should repeat the same stem and finish the sentence in their own words. Instruct them to take turns by going clockwise.

START THE FIRST ROUND- Explain that you are about to introduce the first sentence stem, clarifying that each round will last approximately one minute. Use your judgment on the exact time for each round, allocating less time for situations where there are only three people in each group and more time for deeper stems.- Announce that the round will end when they hear the bell (hit chime to demonstrate sound). Whoever is speaking should complete the stem and attention should be turned to the facilitator.- Remind participants that the round should continue to move without side conversations or crosstalk until the bell is rung. Re-emphasize that staying with the structure is important. - Clarify that after a full cycle of answers, the groups should continue repeating the same stem using new endings.- Some groups may cycle the same stem two or even three times before the bell rings.- Ask the audience to take a deep breath. Read the first stem twice and start the first round.
