Brothers WaterThis level route takes you along the wooded shoreline of Brothers Water, past Hartsop Hall, to the campsite at Sykeside.

Start/Finish: Cow Bridge bus stop - grid ref: NY403134

Distance: 2.3 miles (3.75km)

Facilities: None on route, but toilets available at Sykeside. Brotherswater Inn is at the end of the walk, but the gradient up to it is steep

Maps: OS Explorer Map OL5

1 From the bus stop head towards the car park. Leave the car park at its southern end and follow the surfaced path to Brothers Water. Formerly Broad Water, the name is said to have changed in the 19th Century after two brothers drowned in the lake. Shallow and fringed with reed beds, look out for the summer blooms of water lilies. Moorhens, coots and swans can all be seen. The mixed oak of Low Wood is also wildlife rich and the autumn colours can be superb.

2 Continue along the track to historic Hartsop Hall, a 16th Century Grade I listed building, owned by the National Trust. It stands guard over the side valley of Dovedale. At its head, you will see Dove Crag, one of the steepest cliffs in the Lake District.

3 The route passes the back of the hall and carries on over level ground to Sykeside campsite and a 1:10 short slope to the Bank End Bar. The Brotherswater Inn is up a steeper 1:7 slope behind the bar.

ULLSWATER

Ullswater

This is a linear route along the shore of Ullswater, providing superb views along the northern reaches of the lake. Two steep sections may prove difficult for solo wheelchair users.

Start/Finish: Pooley Bridge village centre bus stop - grid ref: NY471243

Distance: 1.1 miles (1.8km)

Facilities: Public toilets, pubs and cafés in Pooley Bridge

Maps: OS Explorer Map OL7

1 From the bus stop in the centre of the village head towards the bridge and take the footpath on the left near the main car park entrance south past Dunmere. The wide path is well suited for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There is one gate to pass through on the way to the boathouse where there is a seat. Continue on past the boathouse and up a short but steep ramp to follow a raised path above the shoreline.

2 Drop down a short steep ramp and go through another gate. Cross a footbridge and follow the path to a concrete pad on your right. From here you can watch the Ullswater Steamers make their journey to Howtown and Glenridding. Looking north you can see the steep mound of Dunmallard Hill with the remains of its ancient settlement on top. This must have been an important defensive location at the entrance to Ullswater and may have been part of a line of defensive locations that were designed to repel any invader.

3 A rough path, unsuitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, continues for another 150 metres to a gate and a recycled plastic raised boardwalk which gives access to the shingle shoreline on Gale Bay.

Changes in weather can dramatically alter the difficulty of a route so please consider this before setting off. Call 0844 846 2444 or follow @lakesweather on Twitter to check the forecast.

Practical information

Appropriate clothing can make all the difference. It is important to be warm, comfortable and dry when out exploring so make sure you have the appropriate kit and plenty of layers.

Your rucksack should hold everything needed and be carried comfortably. Have extra layers, a hat and gloves, enough food and drink, and a first aid kit. A compass, map and knowledge of how to use them is invaluable.

Mobile phone reception isn’t always good in the Lake District. Leave details of your route and expected finish time with a buddy. If you are delayed please contact your buddy to let them know. This will prevent mountain rescue (a team of volunteers) being called out unnecessarily. If there is an emergency call 999, ask for Cumbria Police and give your location; an accurate grid reference is ideal.

Glenridding to Aira ForceThis route spans woodland with lush green ferns and evergreen specimen conifers. The tumbling waterfall of Aira Force drops an impressive 65 feet. Its roaring falls are set amongst beautiful woodland and can be reached by an enchanting stroll through landscaped glades. Aira Force is the perfect place for a family walk and picnic, and there's a good chance of spotting cheeky red squirrels. This route is easy-going but is a little steep in places.

Start/Finish: Glenridding bus stop - grid ref: NY386169

Distance: 2.8 miles (4.5km)

Facilities: Public toilets and café at Glenridding and Aira Force, hotels at Glenridding

Maps: Landranger 90, Explorer OL5

ELTER WATER

GREAT LANGDALE

This map is for guidance only. Always re-plot your route on an OS map before setting off.

a walk using Langdale Rambler route 516Elterwater toDungeon GhyllHead into the heart of Great Langdale and experience the majesty of this secluded valley.

Start/Finish: Bus stop in Elterwater Village Centre

Distance: 3.2 miles (5km) return

Time: 3 hours

Height gain: 50m

Grade: Easy

Terrain: Well way marked valley bottom track

Refreshments: Elterwater, Chapel Style and Dungeon Ghyll/Stickle Barn

Maps: OS Landranger 90, OS Explorer OL 6; Harveys’ Superwalker Lakeland Central (1:25 000); British Mountain Maps Lake District (1:40 000).

From the Bus stop in the centre of the village walk down the hill and cross the bridge, following signs for Coniston. Just across the bridge, join the obvious path which heads up-river.

Follow the trail, keeping the river on your right for a short while. The path leads through some quarries and you will be able to see the luxurious Langdale Hotel & Spa on the other side.

You will meet a wooden footbridge which crosses the river and takes you up the road, past the Wainwright Inn for a short distance. You can follow this road further to enter the village of Chapel Stile for a break or catch the bus back from outside the School if you prefer. Alternatively pick up the Cumbria Way again, almost straight away, and follow this back down to the river.

Cross the river and the route will lead you by the Great Langdale Campsite and onwards to Oak Howe. Here the route splits, but keep on the Cumbria Way, following the river and skirting around the base of Oak Howe Needle.

The route strays form the river, but returns to cross for one final time, before you meet the road near the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. From here you can catch the Rambler back or reverse your route (if you have time). Be sure to visit one of the traditional Cumbrian Inns in the valley bottom before heading home.

things to do in & around Kendal

bus tickets are available from your Stagecoach driver

The central Lake District is being invaded by a hundred life-sizeddecorated Herdwick sculptures as part of a public art trail, in aid of the Calvert Trust’s 40th Anniversary.

From Keswick to Windermere there will be ewes and lambs appearingin unexpected places... in parks, on buildings, in shops and cafes, and even on boats, all sponsored by local businesses and decorated by local artists.

Buy a trail map and get Herdwick Spotting this summer! Not only will you be having fun, you’ll also be supporting a great cause by helping the Calvert Trust to challenge disability through outdoor adventure.

St. Oswald’s Church

A circuit of GrasmereThis woodland and meadow walk gives access to the beautiful River Rothay.

Start/Finish: St. Oswald's church, Grasmere - grid ref: NY337074

Distance: 3.7 miles (6km)

Facilities: Pubs, cafés and hotels in Grasmere, public toilets in Grasmere and White Moss Common

Getting there: Regular 599 (seasonal and open-top in good weather) and 555 bus services

Maps: - OS Explorer OL7

1 Take the road from the centre of the village following signs for Ambleside and Dove Cottage.

2 To reach Dove Cottage the A591 must be crossed; the safest place to do this is by the mini roundabout. Follow the lane by Dove Cottage, which forks left up a hill, to join a bridleway. Head along the bridleway following signs for coffin road.

3 The bridleway pops in and out of the trees and dips up and down until it meets a junction with another bridleway. This drops off to the right, towards White Moss Common.

4 After 300m or so, just past another tarn, bear right onto the small downhill track. This leads to the car parks at White Moss Common. Carefully cross the busy A591 and access the parkland beside the River Rothay. There are toilets here.

5 Bear right, keeping alongside the River Rothay. Take the footbridge on the left, just before the gate into the meadow and turn right to follow the riverside path. It is narrow and relatively rough here with steep drops off the path. Go through the kissing gate and follow the cobbled path alongside the river. At the head of Grasmere lake is a small weir with another footbridge.

6 Keep left and follow the lake shore. Go through the gate, keep following the smooth track along the water’s edge. After a while the woods to the right become fields, with stunning views across the lake. At the end of this path you turn left up to the road (Red Bank Road).

7 Once you reach the road, turn right heading towards Grasmere village. There is traffic on this lane so take care. There are great views back down the lake and to the fells. You come into the village on Red Bank Road, past Grasmere Garden Village, opposite St. Oswald's church.
