Historical Memories — May By Betty Phillips and Barb Bishop

Originated by Rev. Rex Piercy, Miracle Sunday, May 10, 1992 took place at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Over $209,000 was raised by the congregation in one day. The money was given for the organ restoration, air condi-tioning and mission outreach. Members were asked to give from their assets, not their income. Some cashed in stock certificates, sold fine art and other prized possessions. "Let heavenly music fill this place. Let mighty organ peal and roll and choirs in praise of God be heard... One great miracle!"

May 16, 1897 - The newly completed Methodist Episcopal Church was dedicated at 12th and Main being debt free of the $100,000 building cost. The official booklet, as pictured, shows the dedication was held for several days. According to the Dubuque Sunday Herald, May 9, 1897, "a magnificent modern temple of St. Luke's was completed. It is a monument to Methodism. Loving hearts and willing hands have contributed liberally to the work. Out of their means the members of the flock have given generously in proportions to the blessings that have been theirs and a magnificent structure has been erected."

Dr. George M. Staples, who he himself gave $10,000 to start the building fund, passed away shortly before the dedication. In memory of Dr. Staples, the trustees decided to name the new church for the "Beloved Physician - St. Luke" and it was thus dedicated.

A History of the Music Ministry of Handbells at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church

Celebrating 40 Years! The Handbell Choir program at St. Luke’s Unit-ed Methodist Church had its inception in the fall of 1977. On a Sunday morning after worship, David Burgus approached David Patterson about starting a handbell program at St Luke’s; his family intended to purchase a set of handbells as a memorial.

A 29-bell set, known as a school-bell set, was purchased in October by the Burgus family from Schulmerich Carillons, Inc. The hand-bells arrived in November and a choir of ten St. Luke’s members was organized and be-gan weekly practices. The first performance of the new handbell choir was on Sunday, May 21, 1978. The handbells were dedicated during that morning worship service: “It is with joy that these handbells are presented to St. Luke’s and dedicated in memory of Wesley Burgus by his wife Jean and son David to the end that the bells are an ever-present source of joy and music for the people of St. Luke’s.” The charter ringers were: Darlene Mather, Dawn Thompson, Helen Johnston, Shirley Nederhoff, Patricia Williams, Carol Clark, Kathy Reid, Judy Almquist, David Burgus and Ruth Jones (alternate) with David Patterson as direc-tor. The Prelude shared today by the Wesley Ringers is one of the pieces that was performed for the handbell dedica-tion in 1978. Since that beginning, the handbell choir program at St. Luke’s has grown. We now have four octaves + one bell (48 bells) made possible through additional memorials and honorariums. There have been as many as four different handbells choirs—the JuBELLation Ringers, an experienced adult choir (1977 to present); an adult beginning choir that met on a weekday morning (early 1980s); The DeciBELLS for children ages 9 to 12 (late 1980s to the early 1990s); and the Wesley Ringers, a youth/adult choir for ages 13 to adult (late 1980s to present).

In the spring of 1980, St. Luke’s founded, organized, and hosted the First Annual Dubuque Area English Handbell Festival. Our church continued to host the festival two more years. In 1983, the festival was orga-nized and hosted by First Congregational Church and its director Sharon Purvis; and in 1984 (the last year of the annual festival), it was again organized by St. Luke’s and hosted by Loras College in Christ the King Chapel. The festival was revived in Jan-uary 1999 by Teresa Slade and featured five Dubuque area handbell choirs that per-formed at the Church of the Resurrection. The JuBELLation Ringers have performed numerous times around the tri-states for businesses, clubs, and other churches, including ecumenical Thanksgiving services at the Church of the Resurrection; the sesquicentennial celebration of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and St. Raphael’s Cathedral; the 135th anniversary of Faith United Methodist Church; special concerts at the Dominican World Headquarters in Sinsinawa; and worship services at Long Grove, Strawberry Point, and Center Grove United Meth-odist Churches. Notable performances include the state PEO Convention at Upper Iowa University in 1980, the Lighting the Way to Nonviolence observance at the Julien Dubuque bridge, and special music at the Iowa Life Gift Coalition’s annual tree planting ceremony held in April 2000 at the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. This legacy of community outreach and music ministry continues today as the bells con-tinue to be an important part of worship here at St. Luke’s and a beautiful reminder of those whose memory they honor.

Church World Service — Tools of Hope

The Social Justice team of St Luke's is coordinating with CWS (Church World Service) on June 17th, when we will honor our fa-thers by participating in Tools Sunday. We're privileged to have these opportunities for Christian service, and ask for your partici-

pation by donating towards the tools CWS distributes. "You are Jesus through your actions, not just through your words...be the hands and feet of Christ."

You may use the envelopes provided in the bulletin, and place them in the offering plates, or use enve-lopes provided in South Hallway and turn them in to the church office by Sunday 12 June to be included on the Tools Donation list that will be in the Father's Day bulletin. If you are donating in honor of some-one, please write "in honor of _______ " on the envelope. Tools can be paid for by cash or check. Checks can be made out to St. Luke's UMC with "CWS Blanket Sunday" on the memo line (if you want it to count towards your St. Luke's pledge) or to Church World Service with "Blanket Sunday" on the memo line. If you want a card to give to the person you are donating in honor of, they are available on the table in the back of the church. Thanks, sisters and brothers in Christ.

Donate to the Jesus Fund

St. Luke’s “Jesus Fund” provides vouchers to Eagle’s grocery for those in need. Donations can be given in envelopes put into the offering plate labeled “Jesus Fund.” Your help keeps the Jesus Fund ministry functioning to add that extra little bit of food security people need.
