Last Sunday in the Gospel we experienced a man with Leprosy falling to his knees at the feet of Jesus. His condition was understood to be almost hopeless…only God could cure him…but. The simplicity, humility, and boldness of this man helps us to see his faith. He believes that Jesus has the power and au-thority of God and could actually ‘will’ his healing and make him clean again. What is it that makes us unclean or isolates us from community and intimacy with others? We realize that Jesus has come to set us free from those things, attitudes, and behaviors. Jesus is extending an extraordinary welcome to this man. He did not shun him but felt deep compassion for him and his plight. Jesus comes to save and rescue us from the ‘snares of the Evil One’ and make us whole and free again to experience real ‘joy’…real happiness. Ash Wednesday we began the Holy Season of Lent which is a call to all of us to ‘joy’, freedom, and renewed life in God. We were reminded that a change is necessary or as we might say a turning around with a change of heart and mind… ‘Repent’. Change can be difficult including spiritual change especially when we have set up a pattern and possibly a long standing habit…but it can happen and Jesus can make us whole and wholesome again. We are invited to take on the disciplines of Lent… ‘Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving’. These practices can just be for them-selves unless we see that God is calling us beyond them so as to reach out to care for others. What is God calling us to do this Lent to grow our Spiritual Lives? We have some suggestions in the little forms in the pews and newsletter sent to us. We need to keep track of what we know the Lord is calling us to and track our progress each week…so we can see how we are growing. Remember part of being a disciple is to commit to ‘prayer & study’. Bishop Paprocki…will be celebrating the special Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion on the First Sunday of Lent…Feb. 22nd. The Sat-urday evening before the parishes near Springfield will gather with him and those par-ishes at a distance will gather Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. We celebrate a Rite of Parish Sending at the 8:00 AM Mass on this Sunday. We have three youth who will complete their initiation at the Easter Vigil by receiving Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. We have also two adults who will enter full commun-ion with our Catholic Church by their profession of faith, Confirmation and Holy Eucha-rist. Let us keep them all in our prayers during this Holy Season and be renewed in our baptismal commitment and life. Confirmation Candidates…will be recognized and prayed over at the 10:30 Mass in preparation of their celebration on April 11th with Bishop Paprocki at the 4:30 Mass. Lenten regulations…are printed in the Bulletin (page 4)…devotions will be Wednesdays at 7 PM with Stations of Cross…Thursdays….Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament all day with Benediction at 1:35 PM & 6:30 PM. Don’t forget to take a RICE BOWL with you…that can help remind each of us to care for others! ABL Dinner & Auction…will be this Sunday, Feb. 22nd at Noon at the KC Hall. Red Bag Collection…is this weekend. It is to help all children of our parish to at-tend our Catholic SSPP. Protecting God’s Children training…will be Wednesday, February 25th at 6:30 PM in Morris Hall. Special Collection for Catholic Charities…will be next weekend…Feb. 28 & March 1st.

First Sunday of Lent

Clear Conscience

Usually, the first reading has some-

thing in common with the gospel. Today’s however, has more in com-mon with the second reading from St. Peter. They both talk about Noah and the ark, where the few good people were saved by going through the water. Peter compares that to the waters of Baptism, in which we are saved by God. He also has an inter-esting image of Jesus “preaching to the spirits in prison.” It refers to the fallen angels whose disobedience lead the rest of the population to turn away from God. Just as God washed away the evil of the world in the wa-ters of the flood, so the waters of Baptism made us into a new people who have clear consciences, both because God has forgiven our sins and because we promise to follow only Him.

That leads to the Gospel, where Jesus is tempted by Satan. But unlike the people of Noah’s time, Jesus does not fall to the tempta-tions. Instead, he comes out of the desert, proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is near. He tells us to repent and believe in the good news.

That means we have a choice to make: Do we accept this kingdom and repent, or do we ignore our baptism and do what we want? We may say that we are willing to repent, but do we do anything about it? Do we still have a clear con-science when we think of how much time we spend getting to know Je-sus? Ever pray or read the bible out-side of church? Do we spend near as much on the poor, as we do for movies, hobbies, video games, or drinks? Do we ever tell anyone about the kingdom and what Jesus has done for us?

Next time you see a rain-bow, think about the covenant that God made with Noah. Just as God’s promises get better and better till the coming of Jesus, we are challenged to be more and more like Him. Are you satisfied with just a promise that God won’t destroy us all in a flood? Or are you ready to live the New Covenant that Jesus promises to those who will follow him?

ZIGGY’S WISDOM: Why is being a “Generous Giver” important to your happiness? ZIGGY’S THOUGHTS: Gener-ous Giving keeps us from being totally absorbed in “worldly happen-ings”. Sharing God’s gifts with others gives us a spiritual connection with what life is all about, doing His will and keeping our eternity always in mind...life in heaven!

Divine Mercy Study In what ever state the soul may be, it ought to pray. A soul which is pure and beautiful must pray, or else it will lose its beauty; a soul which is striving after this purity must pray, or else it will never attain it; a soul which is newly converted must pray, or else it will fall again; a sinful soul, plunged in sins, must pray so that it might rise again. There is no soul which is not bound to pray, for every single grace comes to the soul through prayer (Diary 146) Join us as we examined the Diary of St. Faustina and pray the Chaplet every first and third Wednesday of each month at 1:00pm in Morris Hall. A Prayer Pope Francis Prays Every Day A Prayer found in Chester Cathe-dral, England that Pope Francis calls a prayer of St. Thomas More.

Give me a good digestion, Lord, And also something to digest. Give me a healthy body, Lord

With sense to keep it at its best.

Give me a healthy mind, O Lord, To keep the good and pure in sight;

Which seeing sin is not appalled, But finds a way to set it right.

Give me a mind that is not bored, That does not whimper, whine, or

sigh Don’t let me worry over much

About the fussy thing called ”I”.

Give me a sense of humor, Lord; Give me the grace to see a joke; To get some happiness from life

And pass it on to other folk.

Amen
