Our Lady of Sorrows Parish February 3rd, 2019

IV SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear brothers and sisters,

In the synagogue of Nazareth Jesus reads Isaiah 61:1-

2, where the prophet announces the coming of the

Lord who will free his people from their afflictions:

“These words of St Luke make up the first messianic

declaration, from which flow the acts and words

known in the gospel. Through those words and works,

Christ makes his Father present among men” (St John

Paul II, div. mis., 3). Our Lord extends the meaning of

the passage by asserting the prophecy is fulfilled in

him. The message of salvation is nothing other than

himself: “Since he is the ‘Good News’, there is a

complete identity of message and messenger in Christ,

an identity of saying, acting and being” (St John Paul II,

Redempt. miss., 13). Also, his own countrymen reject

him because he depicts himself as the Messiah – the

first of many ways in which Jesus will suffer at the

hands of his people.

God bless you,

Fr. Francisco M. Tovar
