Asotin FFA

Asotin FFA sent ten members to compete at the 91st National FFA Convention. . The livestock team

placed 9th overall out of 45 states. This is the highest ever for the six teams from Asotin that have

competed at Nationals. Additionally, this is the second highest for ANY team from Washington in at

least 25 years.

Asotin FFA also had a Parliamentary Procedure team win our State competition in May, thus qualifying

for Nationals. On Thursday, the team made an outstanding run and qualified for the semifinals, placing

them in the top 12 states in the nation for the event (38 states had teams compete). The team earned a

Plus, it’s a great place to learn!

The AASD Makerspace

(From the website)

The Asotin High School Makerspace is a place for students (and staff!) to bring their creative ideas to

life.

What we have:

Robots to play with (or battle with) CAD programs 3d printing 3d scanning audio production software digital video production

o green screen, cameras, lighting, recording o editing

video game design DSLR Camera craft paint leather work electronics kits soldering station limited power tools workbench Virtual Reality set audio recording acoustic station Laser cutter!

Student testimonials -

My favorite thing in the Makerspace is the 3D printing pen. It lets my creativity flow and is

really fun, but I’ve also learned about the materials and tools that I’m using. Natalie;

Freshman

I go to the Makerspace to use the virtual reality every day at lunch. Waltz of the Wizard is

my favorite program because it requires a lot of strategy. The VR is cool because it’s a lot of

fun, but also has many challenging and educational programs. – Drake; Freshman

Being in the Makerspace is an experience that allows you to explore the most creative parts

of your brain and allows many different learning experiences and opportunities to teach the

younger kids activities. We have existential discussions on a daily basis. Taj; Senior

I like using the 3d printers. I started out going to the Makerspace to find a quiet place to read

and study, but now I also come to work with the printers and have learned a lot about the

process of 3d printing. –Christine; Senior

I love using pretty much everything in the Makerspace, I’ve been waiting for something like

this for years. The access to technology is awesome and it allows students with more

advanced skills to lead by example and get younger students interested in thinking

creatively. We had Bob Ross day last week. It was great. –Maia; Senior

Thank you to Mr. Higgins and Mr. Finkbeiner for all their work to make the MakerSpace

program happen.

Middle School

Classes, sports, and activities are in full swing! It is hard to believe that we are through the first quarter.

As always, we are committed to providing the best education possible. To that end, we have continued

to work on our staff goals:

Goal Progress

1. Asotin Middle School will communicate

and collaborate with the school

community in an effort to enhance

student learning.

We have continued to email parents on weekly events and updates.

We have encouraged families to sign up for the weekly Skyward emails so parents can get a weekly update on their student’s grades.

We have reached out to set up conferences for Nov 7-9.

2. Asotin Middle School staff will create a

culture of inclusivity, equity, rigor,

accountability, and kindness.

Students and staff hosted a noted national speaker, Ray Lozano, to speak at assembly. He discussed making positive choices and avoiding drug/alcohol.

Teachers continue to educate students with a variety of educational techniques: PEAK strategies, Genius Hour, using technology, and student-centered instruction.

3. Asotin Middle School staff will create multiple assessment opportunities and will expect all students to demonstrate learning.

Teachers and administration were recently trained on using SBA interim assessments. The goal is to use more formal testing to guide instruction.

Staff continues to provide multiple assessment measures so students can demonstrate learning.

I just wanted to let you know that Glen and his team did a wonderful presentation at the Quality Inn this morning. Several of us in attendance were very impressed. I can see some of these things the kids are learning being very useful in the kids’ professional development. I just wanted to let you know that we will support them going forward and we are very lucky to have them.

High School Math After analyzing State test scores, Asotin High School scored better than all, but 4 high schools East of the Cascades! Great job AHS students and math department!

AMS/AHS Math On October 3rd and 4th, math teachers from Asotin Middle School and Asotin High School were joined by teachers from surrounding schools for a workshop regarding Phase 2 Implementation of the math curriculum. During the workshop, teachers increased their capacity to model the eight Mathematics Teach Practices from NCTM. The workshop was facilitated by AHS’s own Chris Baldus
