The rigor of items has been increased because of new standards put in place (ELA)/reorganization of previous standards (Math).

A four-hour time limit has been established for STAAR, as opposed to TAKS which was untimed.

Third grade will take a lunch break half way through the testing time.

Students will now be marking answers on a separate answer document.

Significant Differences with STAAR

TAKS STAAR

Six objectives tested all the TEKS (skills)

Five categories test most of the TEKS…the sixth objective is now embedded throughout the test

About 45 questions About 50 questions

Questions would often test one TEK (skill) at a time

Each question could test several TEKS (skills) at once

Questions could be solved in one or two steps

Questions now often have more than two steps (multi-step), or require working backwards

Some questions were computation with not as much reading

From what we know, all questions involve more complex reading (due to multi-step)

Old vs. New Math
