GROUP PRICESOver the years we have built up great working relationships with leading airlines, hotels, hostels, tour companies and guides that provide us with the best group travel rates, STA Travel ensures these great prices are transferred to our customers.

ACCOMMODATIONStar ratings are often not the best way to categorise hotels. Depending on what country you’re travelling through, perceptions of each standard can vary quite dramatically.

To make things much easier for you, we’re giving you our own, very educated opinion on each property that we feature. We have two very straight forward accommodation categories within the “Pick & Mix” section tochoose from:

– The majority of the properties have great locations - in the heart of all the action. Facilities are generally limited, but this is compensated by the friendly and helpful staff. – These are modern, international standard hotels, so expect a plethora of great facilities. All rooms will have private bathrooms, air-con and a host of modern amenities.

RESPONSIBLETRAVEL

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL IS ABOUT HAVING FUN, WHILE ALSO GIVING BACK. IT IS ETHICAL TRAVEL THAT

THE STA TRAVEL APPROACHResponsible travel has been with STA Travel in various shapes and forms since our pioneering days. Over three decades, we’vehelped millions of travellers to make deep connections to the places they visit, and to come away with a greater sense that we’resharing this world.

In 2011 we made it all official by signing up with Sustainable Travel International - a non-profit organisation helping travelproviders to support environmental conservation and protect cultural heritage - to take part in their rigorous Eco-CertificationProgramme. Endorsed by the United Nations’ Global Sustainable Tourism Council, the holistic programme tracks the good stuffwe’ve done so far, examines our environmental footprint, and highlights the gaps we must fill in order to gain the highestaccreditation by 2015.

Our goal is to earn the full five-stars by 2015, and we’ll be audited by an external body along the way. No excuses. No shortcuts.

OUR PLANETERRA PARTNERSHIPSTA Travel has embarked on a responsible travel journey with Planeterra; a non-profit organisation built on the belief thatpeople, and the planet, should be as important as profit in the travel business. Planeterra has been supporting local people todevelop their communities and conserve their cultural heritage since 2003, and they have staff on the ground to make sure itall happens.

The 30 volunteer projects they nurture benefit greatly from your helpful hands, and what you gain from making a positiveimpact is seriously priceless. Inside this Volunteer, Work and Learn brochure you can view our entire range of responsibletravel options; it’s packed full of volunteer and voluntour options the world over.

FRESH DIRECTION FOR ATSUNAMI-DEVASTATED VILLAGEOn December 26 in 2004, the Asian tsunami smashed intoa small island in Southern Thailand called Koh Phra Thong, destroying the main village and killing 75 people. A newvillage was built in its place, and the tsunami survivors – whoonce relied on fishing for their livelihood – are turning to asustainable model of tourism to provide income.

To help them achieve their goal, staff and customers of STATravel have together raised £48,000 to develop a communitycentre and tourism training facility.

Locals and volunteers use the centre to learn about turtle and mangrove conservation, the women’s handicraft group has set up a little shop in there, and the village children are learningto read and write in their new colourful classroom.

TRAVEL INSURANCEOK, travel insurance isn’t the most exciting thing in the world, but it could be the most important purchase you make before you take off on your travels. You must take travel insurance before you leave, you won’t be able to get travel insurance once you have left the UK. The chances are that you’ll have the time of your life and you’ll return home with a big smile on your sun-bronzed face – but just in case things don’t quite go according to plan it’s very wise to have a safety net in place for that extra peace of mind. So if you plan to cycle around colourful city streets, cross a few roads, eat weird and wonderful food, cart your expensive camera or iPod from hostel to hotel or go snorkelling in fish infested phosphorescent waters – then make sure you ask us to organise the right cover for you. See page 38 for the nitty gritty.

INTERNATIONAL SIM CARDOur international SIM is designed to bestmeet our traveller’s needs, offering greatrates wherever you want to go. PICK ANDMIXOur “Pick and Mix” range is unique and gives you the flexibility and choice to decide if we take care of one part of your trip or your entire trip and still guarantee you the ABTA and ATOL security you need as a group leader.

So if you are a group leader who is an expert in a destination we don’t want to teach you how to suck eggs, so please feel free to just book what you need.

If it’s your first time as a group leader then we want to make it stress free. Let us take care of everything and organise your trip from start to finish. Using our expert knowledge to plan everything to perfection.

We are aware that there are times when for whatever reason parts of your trip may have been pre-booked for you. So you may only need flights to your destination and transfers, or you may only need accommodation and a few excursions to make your student’s trips more memorable.

On each destination we have listed a handful of the many excursions on offer with us. We have tried to make these easy to read by giving each one a symbol that is broken down as follows. Walking tours are often the best way to see the sights and to meet the local people, it will also help tire out your students. Bonus!!

Your students will enjoy sightseeing with a difference on board a bicycle, a perfect memory for them to take away

Sit back and enjoy the ride on this bus or coach trip as someone else will be doing all the work so just sit back and enjoy.

These trips will include water so ensure your students bring their sea legs.

Each destination will have a flight symbol or a journey time that will give you the estimated length of travel time for your journey

Most destinations will also have a suggested air/coach itinerary. These are meant to give you an idea of what you can do but certainly not to tell you what to do. Each trip is individual to youand your students so Pick and Mix your perfect trip.

You will find coloured boxes on the bottom right hand side of each destination that has a selection of subjects noted.

The trips on offer are not limited to these subjects.

These are to give a suggestion that the places to visit may be of interest to your students in that particular subject. Each tick is colour co-ordinated to the subject box at the top of thedestinations.
