Annual Report:
Introduction:
The annual day provides the unique opportunity to look back at the past, assess the
academic year, recognize the good that has been achieved, and take note of the
failures so as to make course corrections in the future. From a cursory view, we
have done exceptionally well in all aspects, curricular, co-curricular and extra-
curricular activities. I want to begin this report by thanking God for the many
blessings that this institution has received during the course of this year. The
biggest achievement of this year has been the Academic Autonomy granted to St.
Xavier’s College by the UGC through its letter dated June 19, 2014. As an
autonomous college, the entire faculty is involved in designing the syllabi in
respective departments. All our faculty is involved in 18 different Non-Statutory
Committees and some are in Statutory bodies. Dr Nirmal Desai has been appointed
as the Controller of Examinations.
2
We continue to be among the top 50 colleges in the country, and the first among
the colleges in Gujarat. It may be noted that India today rated the Science section
in the 31st position and Arts at the 34
th position in the whole country. Among the
top 50 educational institutions in India, The Week rated SXC at 27th
position.
However, we cannot afford to remain complacent, and we need to strive,
untiringly, for a single digit rating, at national level in both Arts and Science
streams.

Infrastructure
Many new facilities were added in a
few departments. Library facilities
were upgraded at a cost of Rs. 6 lakhs.
A total of 620 books were added in
various subject at a cost of Rs.
2,69,315. Additional equipments
accounting for 12.5 lakhs were added
to the labs. High ended equipment such
as UV – Visible Spectrophotometer,
Microscopes, gel documenting systems
were procured. Installation of CCTV has helped to improve safety and prevent
theft, which was a frequent phenomenon in the past. The Physics and Electronics
Laboratory of first, second and third years have been upgraded. Zoology Lab,
Psychology Lab, Economics Department, Career cell, CoE office, Library, and
store rooms were upgraded. A new fax machine and Biometric system has been
introduced in the office. The
department of Gujarati modified LR 5
by installing 22 portraits of Gujarati
and Hindi literary figures. Computers
were installed in the department of
Economics, Physics, Chemistry,
English, college office, Biochemistry,
Physically challenged students, NSS
and IQAC. Drinking water facility has
been upgraded by installing two separate RO system with cooling facility on
second floor. The water cooler on the ground floor was also replaced. A central
laboratory for bioscience was set up and named as Xavier Lab for Research and
Development (XLRD). A new laboratory at a cost of 30 Lakhs is being constructed
on the top floor of the building to accommodate new courses to be introduced, next
June. We have renovated the counselling room, introduced ICT enabled 5
interactive smart boards, made our website a more dynamic one and modified the
washrooms for sports persons. Rs. 26,68,866 were spent on campus maintenance.
12
Rs.7,92,610 were spent only on ensuring security on our campus. That means
College Management pays nearly Rs.1821per person, on security related expenses.
Despite the efforts to provide an organised parking facilities for two wheelers
within the campus, students still continue to park their vehicles outside the campus,
on the roadside, thus creating traffic congestions and invite the wrath of our
neighbours. This is my sincere request to those students, who indulge in such
uncivilised practices.
Future Plans:
St. Xavier’s College as an autonomous institution has planned to introduce a B.A.
in Journalism, BSc in Biotechnology, MSc in Biochemistry and MSc in Physics
from June 2015. Efforts are on to clear the way to set up our extension campus in
an area of 17 acres land adjacent to Greenwoods resort in Kodiyar, in the coming
years. I take this opportunity to thank our Jesuit Provincial for making available
this 17 acres land to St. Xavier’s college. We have signed a MoU with Tata
Consultancy Services. This is a strategic collaboration effort to provide our
students with greater carrier opportunities, when they pass out from our institution.
We have been selected as a college with potential for excellence under phase-III
and sanctioned 1.5 crores. We have also received Rs 20lakhs under the UGC XIth
additional grant, 20 Lakhs from CPE Phase –II, and 1.2lakhs from RUSA. The
entire amount will utilised in developing library, teaching aids, and upgrading
laboratories. College also received Rs.7.5lakhs from UGC as developmental grant
for UG and PG courses.
College has established a best department award effective from next year following
the NAAC criteria for evaluation. We urge all departments to strive towards
achieving this coveted trophy from 2016.
College wishes to set up a 100 terminal visual computer library for the benefit of
students, and organise more seminars and workshops in the next academic year
Hopefully, we will go in for a visual library and a gymnasium during this coming
13
year.
All that we have achieved wouldn’t have been possible without the selfless
commitment of each one of you. Each of you can give a pat on your shoulder for
the commendable contribution made towards actualizing the dream of Xavier’s to
shine as the best educational institute in India. Let us also thank the Almighty for
being our guiding force in all our endeavours.
Jai Xaviers
