From the Pastor: Violence is a re-sponse we turn to very easily when we are upset. We become irritated, both-ered, ticked off, etc. by very common experiences. Then those feelings evolve into actions. For instance, how

many of us can admit to feeling a desire to cause someone harm after an aggressive and dangerous maneuver by another driver on the road? Or, maybe it was at a sporting event when you became angry with a referee, an opposing player or coach, or at one of your team’s players who did not perform up to your expectations? Or, maybe you were feeling very tired after a long day of work and one of your own family members “pushed the wrong button?” I understand these feelings and reactions. Just the other evening I attended my nephew’s basket-ball game and became frustrated at the referees for their “bad calls.” I yelled out in frustration. Even now, a few days later, I am amazed at how quickly I moved from joy to frustration. There are no excuses for yelling in anger at the referee. Referees on every level have a hard job. They are not perfect. They may need some reminders from the coaches about what to watch for, but they do not need to hear my angry outbursts. We must not let a violent world, or a violence-oriented society, or own violent habits and history to determine our current behaviors. We are daughters and sons of God, sisters and brothers of Jesus the Christ. We are to be a peace-oriented People of God, prepared to reconcile with others. “To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well,” (Luke 6:29). Jesus was not inviting us to be passive. Note well, he is speak-ing to poor people who are accustomed to being de-graded by their “masters.” Author and theologian Walter Wink describes the dynamic as follows: The first hit was likely a backhanded slap with the right hand, an insult. To offer the other cheek meant the hitter would need to hit with the right fist. Such fighting was thought to be not fit for dignified people. Turning the other cheek was not passive, but rather required the hitter to recognize that the “inferior” was not going to accept this kind of treatment. It was like saying: I matter! Do not treat me poorly! I am one of God’s children, too!

In the Sorrows of the Virgin Mary we see a reflection of the suffering and bitter anguish of the human Christ. Just as Mary accepted the total mystery of Christ into her life, so may we see in our sorrow, our fear, our humiliation, a dim, but real participation in His passion and death, recalling that if we wish to follow Him, we must “take up our cross” each day. RETROUVAILLE COUPLES RETREAT... Retrouvaille helps couples through difficult times their marriages. It is designed to provide tools to help get marriages back on track. While the pro-gram begins with a weekend, the post-weekend phase of Retrouvaille is as crucial to the healing of a troubled marriage as the initial weekend ex-perience. During the post-weekend sessions, the

weekend technique is further developed and combined with ad-ditional tools to explore other areas of the marriage relationship. Weekends are coming up soon. Mensaje de nuestro Párroco: La violencia es una respuesta que elegimos muy fácilmente cuando estamos molestos. Nos irritamos, nos molestamos, nos enojamos, etc. por

experiencias comunes que todos solemos enfrentar. En consecuencia esos sentimientos evolucionan y dictan nuestra reacciones. Por ejemplo, ¿cuántos de nosotros podemos admitir que sentimos el deseo de causar daño a alguien después de una maniobra agresiva y peligrosa de otro conductor en la carretera? ¿O tal vez fue en un evento de deportes cuando te molestaste con un árbitro, un jugador o entrenador del equipo contrario, o con uno de los jugadores de tu propio equipo que no cumplió sus expectativas? Tal vez se sentía muy cansado después de un largo día de trabajo y uno de los miembros de su familia "presionó el botón equivocado?" Entiendo estos sentimientos y reacciones. Justo la otra noche asistí al juego de baloncesto de mi sobrino y me frustré por las “malas llamadas” de los árbitros. Grité de frustración. Incluso ahora, unos días después, me sorprende lo rápido que pasé de sentirme contento a estar frustrado. No hay excusas para gritarle al árbitro. Los árbitros en cada nivel tienen un trabajo difícil. No son perfectos. Es posible que necesiten algunos recordatorios de los entrenadores sobre qué deben observar, pero no necesitan escuchar mis arrebatos. No debemos permitir que un mundo violento, una sociedad que normaliza la violencia, o tener hábitos o tener una historia de violencia determinen nuestros comportamientos o reacciones. Somos hijas e hijos de Dios, hermanas y hermanos de Jesucristo. Debemos ser un Pueblo de Dios caminando juntos buscando la paz, preparados para reconciliarnos con los demás. “Al que te hiera en la mejilla, preséntale también la otra ” (Lucas 6:29). Jesús no nos estaba invitando a ser pasivos. Tengan en cuenta que habla con personas pobres que están acostumbradas a ser degradadas por sus "maestros". El autor y teólogo Walter Wink describe esta dinámica de la siguiente manera: El primer golpe probablemente fue una bofetada con la mano derecha, un insulto. Ofrecer la otra mejilla significaba que el agresor tendría que golpear con el puño derecho. Se pensaba que tal lucha no era adecuada para personas dignas. Poner la otra mejilla no era pasivo, sino que requería que el agresor reconociera que la persona “inferior" no iba a aceptar este tipo de trato. Era como decir: ¡Yo Importo! ¡No me trates mal! ¡Yo también soy uno de los hijos de Dios!

Dele a los padres la gracia de confiar en Ti y Tu hijo para que sus hijos e hijas puedan ser ayudados a elegir su vocación en la vida con sabiduría y libertad. Oh Dios, nos has llamado a la salvación y has enviado a tu Hijo a establecer la Iglesia para este propósito, y has provisto a los sagrados ministros. La cosecha está siempre lista, pero los trabajadores escasean. Inspira a nuestros jóvenes a seguir a Jesús sirvien-do a tu pueblo. Amén
