New Booklets for the Christian Faith

I have been writing on The Formula of Concord in the Newsletter this year. But this month I want to talk with you about some new booklets available at Church. The Lutheran Church has been putting out a wonderful new series on various topics and I think they are worth your time. There are four in the series so far, and more are coming.

A Simple Explanation of Christianity. This is Luther’s Small Catechism without all of the questions and answers from youth catechesis classes. If you haven’t read the Catechism in a while, pick up a copy. Give one to a friend or family member who is curious about Christianity and the Church.

A Simple Explanation of the Church Service. I often hear that our worship is for the older crowd and the churches with rock bands are for the young. This is simply not true. Every church has a liturgy. We should understand why we worship the way we do so we can explain it to others.

A Simple Explanation of Christian Denominations. There are real differences between churches in confessions of faith and sources of truth. Many people switch churches like restaurants, without understanding fundamental differences on teachings and practices.

In the Image of God: Gender & Sexual Identity. I am convinced that this is the issue facing our culture today, and the athletes and pop-stars should not be our teachers here. God is our Creator. He knows who we are. He has designed our bodies. It is best to listen to Him. Let’s conform our lifestyles to the Word of God.

These are available in the narthex and at the new rack by the covered entry. Pick one up today! Pastor

Pastor Pool’s Sunday Bible Study

The Gospel of Mark   In August, we continue our new study on the Gospel of Mark. The

focus of this study will be knowing Jesus in light of the Word of God. This class meets Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. No previous Bible study experience is necessary and it is always fine to sit and listen.

August 4: Mark 5:21-43: Jairus’ DaughterAugust 11: Mark 6:1-13: Jesus at Home in NazarethAugust 18: Mark 6:14-29: John and Trouble with HerodAugust 25: Mark 6:30-44: Feeding the 5000

Genesis Bible Study with Pastor

Our Tuesday Bible study is exploring Genesis verse by verse. We normally meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays. Our study is at 9:30 a.m. or 7:00 p.m. in classroom 1. New people are always welcome, so join us! Bring your Bible.

August 6: Genesis 41-42: Pharaoh’s DreamsAugust 20: Genesis 43-44: Joseph’s Brothers

Higher Things

Mark your calendar! We are already planning for our youth Higher Things conference next summer, July 21-24, 2020 in Grand Rapids, Michigan at Calvin University. This is for confirmed young people, 8th grade through early college age. Put this on your calendar now. Registration information coming soon!

Scrip Fundraiser

Through Scrip, we raise money for our everyday preschool expenses in places we already shop. Scrip permits us to buy prepaid cards for places like Walmart, Jewel, Amazon, gas stations, and restaurants. These organizations then make

donations to us! The typical donation can vary from 2-16%. This means no extra money out of pocket and yet we can still raise extra funds. Order forms are available in the Fellowship Hall or Church office. Ask your Board of Education members if you have any questions

Our next Scrip order is due August 4. Cards will be available for pick-up by August 11. We will put your cards in your box in the narthex.

Summer Wednesday Services

Join us for summer services in August on Wednesdays at 7:00pm. We will be exploring our freedom in Christ through the Epistle of Paul

to the Galatians, verse by verse with the help of Martin Luther and his Great Galatians Commentary. We will commune on August 4.

Summer Sunday School

We will have Children’s Summer Sunday School only on the first Sunday of each month. We will be watching a special video series with popcorn and prayers. On the other Sundays, we will not have children’s classes. Adult classes will continue to meet. Teens and kids are welcome to attend with parents. Children’s classes resume on September 1.

Church Picnic Volunteers

We have sign-up sheets on the bulletin board by the entrance to the education building for volunteers to help with the various phases of the Church Picnic on August 25.

Help is needed:1) in the kitchen during late service;2) setting out food for serving;3) cleaning up the kitchen after dinner;4) assisting with children’s games;5) cleaning up the yard and building.

Lend a hand – sign up to help!

The Clinton Lutheran HourRadio Broadcast

Each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. the Clinton Lutheran Hour is broadcast over the Clinton Radio Station KROS, 1340 AM. The program is sponsored by the Radio Mission League. Digital recordings are made of our church services each Sunday by Darlene Paysen. Jeffrey Niebuhr is the announcer giving the introductory message for each broadcast.

A broadcast may be sponsored for a certain Sunday for $35.00 by contacting Janice Wheelock, 321-4536, who handles the scheduling. Sharon Brown is the Radio Mission League treasurer and receives the broadcast fees. A broadcast may be given in memory of a loved one, for a birthday or anniversary, or simply as a gift of love. The name of the sponsor and who the broadcast is given for is included each week.

St. John’s library carries CDs of each broadcast for anyone to check out. Perhaps there is a service you would like to share with a friend or you were unable to attend a service. Come find it in the church library! The most recent Sundays are on the desk when you first enter; instructions are next to them on how to check a CD out. You can find past broadcasts on the shelves with the DVDs and videos.
