he was known for his keen interest in geography and was nicknamed “The Geometer”. About 743 he decided to visit Rome and the Holy Land. However, Pepin of France asked Virgil to stay with him as his advisor. After a two-year stay in France, Virgil was sent to Bavaria, Germany where he founded the monastery of Chiemsee. The Duke of Bavaria appointed him Abbot of St. Peter’s Monastery in Salzburg, Austria.

Virgil was a great astronomer, far in advance of his own age. He taught that the earth was round, nine centuries before Copernicus and Galileo. St. Virgil was not a mere professional scientist. He used science in as much as it was necessary to interpret the truths of religion. The first object of his life was to tell the French and Germanic people how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go.

Virgil’s life as Bishop of Salzburg was spent in missionary work, not only his people, but for the conversion of the neighboring tribes. For this he is known also as the “Apostle of Carinthia”. Numerous miracles ascribed to his intercession led to the introduction of his cause in Rome and his canonization by Gregory IX in 1233. Virgil, the scholar, bishop, apostle, and saint is our Patron and invites us to love God above all things, to serve His Church, bring others to this Faith in Christ, and live in awe of God’s beautiful creation.

We have St. Virgil’s authenticated relic (by Archbishop Francis Albert, OSB, of Salzburg) donated to our Parish as a centennial gift

from Assumption Parish in Morristown. This relic is encased below the statue of St. Virgil in our church.

St. Virgil was not content to keep his faith to himself, but like many Irish monks of his times he wanted to share his knowledge, his skills and his faith with others. He was given the Archdiocese of Salzburg, Austria, where he labored for over forty years. Like St. Virgil our Patron, let us also share our faith, our expertise and our time for the building up and growth of God’s Kingdom on earth. Wishing all you a very Happy and Blessed Feast Day - Fr. Lance

Rosary Society Movie Night Tuesday, December 5, 7:00pm in the Tracy

Featuring The Christmas Card (a Hallmark Movie)

Starring Edward Asner, John Newton, Alice Evans

After a horrible tour in Afghanistan, US Army Sergeant Cody Cullin is put on leave. He returns home with the task of returning this fellow soldier, Jonesy’s, private possessions to his widow. While traveling home, he passes Nevada City, California, where he meets Faith Spelman. She writes Christmas cards to lonely soldiers. Cody, an orphan, “coincidentally” had received one of them. Her father, Luke, a Vietnam vet, is the owner of a logging business. Cody is very helpful in the business and saves Luke, who nearly gets run over by a car. The family invites Cody to their home for Christmas dinner. Luke would like Cody to join the family, but Faith is engaged to Paul, an inattentive wine broker. Can Faith’s heart be swayed? Come join us and bring friend.

Reminder—Please bring new, unwrapped items for the Jersey Battered Women’s Shelter collection, as well as wrapping paper you may have. If you aren’t attending the meeting, please drop off items at the Rectory. A donation of $1 may be given to purchase Food Pantry items, in lieu of a canned good. In case of inclement weather, please call the Parish Office. Information will be available after 4:00pm.

#iGiveCatholic is a 1-day online charitable event in dioceses across the nation to support individual Catholic parishes to raise funds to support their ministries. #GivingTuesday, is set for Tuesday, November 28, following Thanksgiving and the widely-recognized shopping events, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. #GivingTuesday kicks off the Season of Giving and helps us to be more focused on giving, rather than receiving. Last year the event raised more than $1.8 million for participating dioceses throughout the United States. St. Virgil’s is joining this national program, and ALL DONATIONS BY ST VIRGIL’S PARISHIONERS AND FRIENDS STAY AT ST. VIRGIL’S. The funds will be used to replace the fire alarm panel in the school building. If you have any questions about the program, call Gloria in the Parish Office.

Ministries & Outreaches

OPERATION CHILLOUT OUTREACH

Operation Chillout is a local grassroots program which started out primarily assisting homeless Vietnam vets. Today, most are veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These vets are young – 20 to 30 years old – and many are women. They risk staying homeless and unemployed as many suffer from post-traumatic stress and other health conditions that increase their risk of death. Many choose to live outdoors rather than stay overnight in shelters. It is to this group that Operation Chillout (www.operationchillout.org), now in its 17th year, provides the basic necessities to help them through the winter and summer months.

Each year starting in mid-December, Operation Chillout distributes backpacks filled with warm clothing and toiletries. Last winter, over 1,000 were given to the homeless right here in Morris and neighboring counties and eastern Pennsylvania.

St. Virgil Parish is a collection partner. We have been asked to provide only the items listed below for both men and women. Clothing must be new; please provide only the items and sizes requested. We will have this collection from November 18 - December 3. Please place your gift in the carton beside the altar.

Thermal underwear (L, XL, 2XL) * Warm gloves (no leather, Gore-Tex preferred) * Heavy, warm socks (wool/acrylic blend

preferred) Zipped hooded sweatshirt or heavy flannel shirt Knit cap

*most-needed items

If you prefer, cash or checks payable to either St. Virgil Church or Operation Chillout Inc. may be given instead of clothing. Please place your donation in an envelope and drop it into the collection basket. The organization does not solicit, so you will not be contacted for additional support. Operation Chillout, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) not for profit organization and is eligible for matching gifts and grants. Your contributions are tax deductible. Cash and checks payable to St. Virgil’s will be used to purchase gloves and thermal underwear.

As we are about to celebrate Thanksgiving, please think of those who have little to be thankful for and be as generous as you can. Your generosity will be very much appreciated.

Jersey Battered Women’s Service Holiday Boutique

Every December, the Rosary Society sponsors a gift collection for the holiday boutique conducted by the Jersey Battered Women’s Service (JBWS) for its clients. Last year nearly 200 families, including 370 children, received holiday gifts. Mothers select gifts of new toys and clothing donated by the local community. Handmade gifts are especially appreciated. You can imagine a mother’s relief as she knows that she can give her children something in these trying times. JBWS has requested that we consider gifts for teens and pre-teens although items for all ages are welcome. Suggested items are listed here, but a more-detailed list is available in the Parish Office:

Clothing for all ages (especially boots for ages 12 months-4 years)

Jewelry/wallets/purses/watches Makeup/nail polish Puzzles/books (no board games, please) Crafts/science kits Sports equipment Movies/DVDs

Please drop off your gifts (new and unwrapped) at the Parish Office no later than Tuesday, December 5. Unused wrapping paper (sheets, rolls), ribbons and bows may be given separately. Rosary Society members may bring their gifts to the monthly meeting, also December 5. All parishioners of St. Virgil’s are invited to participate and to make the holidays a bit brighter for these families.

Star of Bethlehem

The weekend following Thanksgiving traditionally begins our Christmas Outreach Program. For more than 30 years, St. Virgil parishioners have shown their compassion for the poor by responding generously to the Star of Bethlehem trees.

Two trees with gift card requests will be in our church the weekends of November 25/26, December 2/3, and December 9/10. Anyone wishing to contribute to this outreach program can select an envelope from one of

the trees on either side of the altar and purchase the gift card requested. For your convenience, gift cards will be available for purchase at the doors of the church on those weekends as well. They will also be available for purchase at the Parish Office during the week.

Please place the envelope with the enclosed gift card in one of the collection boxes under the trees. Please mark the amount on the gift card.

The gift cards are not only used to help make Christmas a happier time for children and adults, but they’re also used throughout the year.

In addition to direct assistance to needy parishioners, some of the other recipients include: The Office of Temporary Assistance, which provides food, clothing and prescription medications to the needy; St. Peter’s Orphanage, where boys receive the level of care they so desperately need and the Mental Health Association which is dedicated to empowering people in recovering from mental illness.

Thank you in advance for your kind generosity.

Former parishioner Margaret Meys is one of several women of Christ Our King parish in Mt. Pleasant, SC, that make clothing for the poor and victims of disasters. To date, more than 3,000 handmade articles have been sent to Vietnam, Honduras, Ethiopia, Brazil, India and, most recently, to the victims of hurricanes in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. This work is done under the auspices of the Villa Walsh Religious Teachers Filippini. The group depends upon donations of fabrics suitable for clothing. If you have any fabric that you are willing to donate, please contact our Music Director Pam Kane (Margaret's daughter) at [email protected].

2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal: In Giving, We Receive

This time of year, as our nation celebrates Thanksgiving, let us reflect on how we use all the gifts given to us by a loving God. Consider showing your thanks for all your blessings by making a gift to the 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. As we are reminded in this year’s Appeal theme – In Giving, We Receive – your participation not only impacts the lives of tens of thousands of people in need, but it benefits you as well. Please make a pledge today! For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2017appeal.org.

Weekly Reflections

Solemnity of Our Lord, Jesus Christ Feast of Christ, The King Matthew 25:31-46 Here we are at the end of this year’s Liturgical Calendar. This is the last of our readings from Matthew. Next week we begin Advent with the Gospel of Mark. Each liturgy year ends the year’s Gospels with the feast of Christ as the King of the “Universe,” the highpoint of our Gospel stories. Our universe, as we know it, is riddled with difficulties at this time. There are plenty of political issues, social

Page 6: St. Virgil Parish Band Danielle Capuzzi @ dmcapuzzi@verizon.net Choir Director Beth Vecchio @ singerdramagirl@hotmail.com advance

issues and ecological issues to keep us worrying about this world of ours. So it should be a big comfort to each of us that we can hand them over to the Lord of the Universe to show us how to handle them. It should make our imagination busy with wonder about a universe that is run by a Lord that is all love, a universe where storms, wars, drugs, illnesses, divisions are not a source of pain to anyone.

So what is Matthew’s antidote to these issues? He follows exactly where we have been for many weeks now. Matthew tells us what we must do to make the world a better place. We must ACT. We must feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, cloth the naked. And Matthew has us ask, “when did we see you hungry, thirsty?” Christ says, “whatever you did for the least brothers of mine, you did for me.” These are some of the most famous words from the Gospel, and they are the words where we leave Matthew’s Gospels.

This is also Thanksgiving weekend, a time we can stop and give thanks for so many things. One of those things is the faith we have been given, and the peace and comfort we can receive from this faith. Sometimes we take this faith for granted. So let us remember to reflect on what a difference a philosophy of life, like the one given to us through the Gospels, can give us.

Lord of the Universe, thank You for Your gift of faith and the meaning that gift can give to our life!

Evangelization Corner

There is nothing quite so straightforward and yet so complicated as the task of evangelization. Evangelization is the call to share our faith with our family, our friends, our neighbors and our co-workers, but in reality, our goal is to be Jesus Christ’s witness to all people.

How often have you heard someone say, “But I am only one, what I can do?”

The reality is that ‘you are one’. And, while you cannot do everything, you can do something. And, if you can do something, you ought to do it. And, if you ought to do it, with the grace of God, you can do it.

In the Gospel of St. Matthew, we read Jesus saying “You are salt for the earth. But if salt loses its taste, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled under people's feet. You are light for the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in people's sight, so that, seeing your good works, they may give praise to your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16)

In this parable our Lord is telling each of us that we can and should make a difference in the situations we find ourselves in. Just as a little salt can improve the flavor of something, a little influence can go a long way.

You might be the only Christian in your family … or the only Christian in your neighborhood … or the only Christian in your workplace. You may be the only Christian that some people will ever know. But, while you may be trying to get out of an uncomfortable situation in which you find yourself, you may have been put there by the Lord to be a positive influence to move people to seek the truth; to seek God.

Do what you can, where you are, with the influence that God has given you and spread the Good news. The way you live your life and the example that you set that can make a difference. This is the power of one. And, never underestimate the power of one.

May His grace be with each of us as we continue on our journey with Jesus. St. Virgil’s Evangelization Ministry
