THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 30, 2016

The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. -- Psalm 145:14

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The recent "October count" tracking the statistics of participation at Sunday Mass calls to mind the situations of churches where it is difficult or impossible for Catholics to worship freely. This is especially striking in English Catholic history, as freedom of worship was systematically dismantled at the time of the Reformation. It seems that most English people retained deeply Catholic sympathies throughout the period of religious upheaval. Catholics who refused to participate in the public worship of the Church of England were called "recusants," and beginning with the reign of Elizabeth I, they were subject to strict penalties. Recusant literally means "a person refusing to obey a command." Most of those laws were in force until the early 1800s, and Catholics were not entirely emancipated from the duty of Anglican worship until 1829. Recusants paid heavy fines for not attending the state church. Holding on to Catholic faith was therefore a luxury of the very rich, who maintained private chapels, and sent their daughters and sons to English convents and monastery schools on the continent. Remarkably, the first among all British peers, the Dukes of Norfolk, the hereditary Earls Marshal of England, have never given up their Catholic faith. Many of these wealthy recusant families founded the colony of Maryland, and later many members of the old Catholic families continued on to the Kentucky frontier in search of greater religious freedom. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co

A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR

Elsewhere in this bulletin you will see a reminder that Eucharistic adoration has begun again here at St. Vincent. Every first Saturday of the month (which is next Saturday, November 5), 9 am – Noon, we will

have the Eucharistic presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the altar. When I became Catholic 51 years ago, I was deeply inspired by the awesome Catholic Christian belief that Jesus Christ is really present in Eucharist to nourish our deepest hunger for a Divine Love that is unconditional, ever present, and everlasting. I came to appreciate the spiritual practice of making a “Holy Hour” before the Eucharistic Christ as a way of being more mindful of and open to his transforming love. Today more than ever we need to be centered in the reality of Christ as the center point and still point of our lives. Our Lord wants to give us the strength, guidance, peace, and joy that is the deepest source of human fulfillment. We have an additional opportunity to offer him praise and thanks for giving us his life totally and for showing us how much he wants to be a part of us. Consider coming for one hour on first Saturday mornings to pray in a way that helps you to be more conscious of the real presence of Jesus in your overall life. The fact that we are all very busy should lead us even more to be intentional about going deeper in prayer. If you would like more information about this wonderful spiritual opportunity or would like to sign up for a specific hour, possibly on a monthly basis, please contact Kerri Schneider at 267-234-4898 or [email protected].

********************* PLEASE NOTE - NEW DATES!!

Heritage and Hopes Follow-up

Our conversation on ways we can strengthen faith formation in our parish has been

rescheduled to Thursday, November 3, 7 pm, in the Scullen Room.

Our conversation focusing on ways we can strengthen our parish outreach has been

rescheduled for Wednesday, November 16, 7 pm, in the Scullen Room.

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Zacchaeus went out of his way to get a better look at Jesus. This changed his life. To his surprise, Jesus invited himself over to become more acquainted. He changed from being

a selfish taker to being a generous giver.

When families take time to know one another better, Jesus reveals himself more clearly and can heal problems and relationships. Take another look at family members and relationships. People change. So can you!

DISCIPLES FOR THE DYING

The next First Friday Mass will be at St. Sebastian on November 4, at 5 pm. The schedule is as follows: St Bernard, December 2, 12:10 pm St Vincent, January 6, 2017, 6:30 am All are welcome!

On this Priesthood Sunday we gratefully reflect on the gift of the priesthood for the Church and for those men who have generously responded to this vocation. Pray that the Holy Spirit may inspire more men to discern and respond to the ministry of Priesthood.

Thank you, Fr. Norm!

Next week our parish will take up the collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). The AMS relies solely on private donors in support of its mission, “Serving those who serve” and its ministry to provide the same pastoral care and services to Catholics serving in the United States Armed Forces, enrolled in U.S. Military Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs’ Medical Centers, working in civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations, as does any other Catholic diocese. There will be envelopes in the pews. While the salaries and retirement of Catholic military chaplains are paid for by the U.S. Government, the AMS receives no funding from government or the military for its programs and services, including the co-Sponsored Seminarian Program, which provides priests for home dioceses and for the military chaplaincy. To learn more about the AMS go to www.milarch.org/nationalcollection.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL AUXILIARY It is that time of the year when we give thanks for the people in our lives and for gifts received - let's consider sharing our bounty with others! The St. Vincent de Paul Society has requests coming from the elderly, from families, and from troubled people asking for food for Thanksgiving. In the past, these requests numbered from 50 to 60. We are asking our parishioners, our grade school and high school, and Hoban High to help us fill 200 plus bags of food to help make their holiday a little nicer. You have already made a difference in peoples' lives and we receive many heartfelt thanks for your thoughtfulness so let us continue the work of the 'patron saint of the poor' - St Vincent de Paul - and open our hearts to our neighbors in need. We are collecting special holiday foods like canned pumpkin, sweet potato, cranberries and stuffing mix. Also cake mixes, frosting and fruit. Staples like cereal, soups, pasta and peanut butter are needed. We appreciate each and every offering you make! St Vincent de Paul Auxiliary
