FAMILY PERSPSECTIVES
The parable we read today should be a clarion call to “be prepared” for the coming of Jesus at the end times. How do we talk about death and grief as a family? St. Paul’s words in the second reading urge us to “not grieve like the rest who have no hope.” As Christians, we still grieve when a loved one or friend dies, even as we hope in the resurrection. How does your family help others in the passage of grief?

I am writing this bulletin note on Sunday evening, November 1. This will be in the parish bulletin the weekend of November 7-8. Obviously I do not know at
this writing who won the presidential election or if votes are still being counted to determine the winner. Whatever the outcome, we all need to come together as Americans to strengthen our solidarity as a country, to pray for peace and healing in our nation and in our world. We certainly can have strong convictions about various political issues that at their heart are ethical, emotional, and spiritual. We do not have to compromise any conviction. We are called to ground our values in the wisdom and example of Jesus Christ – never letting our differences be a reason that we are hostile toward one another or pulled apart from important family, work, and friendship connections.
This pandemic reminds us as a nation and a world that we are interconnected and interdependent. We are all in this together. We should never let our belief in God, who lovingly created everyone in our human family, become a justification for caring only about people who think like us.
Understandably many of us thought and hoped that this election would put everything behind us. The reality is there is so much more to be done over the next several years. We each have a significant part to play in going forward. We need to prayerfully seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit humbly asking our God, “How can I, in my sphere of influence, contribute toward making a better and stronger United States of America? How can I be a more faith-filled follower of Jesus Christ in what I say and do and in how and why I do it? “

It would be a vast understatement to say that this year has been a challenging one. We can easily say that we have been through a lot and this particular weekend in November finds us post-election and pre-Thanksgiving. Whatever we feel about the election results and whatever our anxious thoughts about Thanksgiving might be, these times can help us to try and develop a truly grateful heart. Our Lord told us that it is no great accomplishment to love those who love us. The true accomplishment lies in loving those who do not love us, or who are not good to us. The same holds true for our feelings of gratitude. If we are only grateful for the good things in our life, then it becomes almost impossible to ever appreciate or accept the other. In being grateful for the hurts and the down times, though seemingly impossible, we remember that God holds the big picture in the palm of his hand, and we see only a fraction of it. While we may be saddened at the thought of not being together as family during the coming holidays, we remain grateful for the people we have in our lives. While we may feel isolated or alone, we are thankful that we have the ability to use our downtime to become better people and reach out to others in new ways. I was reminded of the thoughts of spiritual writer Henri Nouwen when he said:
“To be grateful for the good things that happen in our lives is easy, but to be grateful for all of our lives—the good as well as the bad, the moments of joy as well as the moments of sorrow, the successes as well as the failures, the rewards as well as the rejections—that requires hard spiritual work. Still, we are only truly grateful people when we can say "thank you" to all that has brought us to the present moment. As long as we keep dividing our lives between events and people we would like to remember and those we would rather forget, we cannot claim the fullness of our beings as a gift of God to be grateful for. Let's not be afraid to look at everything that has brought us to where we are now and trust that we will soon see in it the guiding hand of a loving God.”
The “Thank You” prayer included in this bulletin is a good one to remember and start praying now, before Thanksgiving. It reminds us to be people of gratitude in all things.
THANK YOU PRAYER
Thank You for the things you have withheld. You have protected us from what we may never realize. Thank You, God, for the doors You have closed. They have prevented us from going where You would rather not have us go. Thank you, Lord, for the physical pain You've allowed in our lives. It has helped us more closely relate to Your sufferings on our behalf. Thank you, Lord, for the alone times in our lives. Those times have forced us to lean in closer to You. Thank you, God, for the uncertainties we've experienced. They have deepened our trust in You. Thank You, Lord, for the times You came through for us when we didn’t even know we needed a rescue. Thank You, Lord, for the losses we have experienced. They have been a reminder that You are our greatest gain. Thank You, God, for the tears we have shed. They have kept our hearts soft and moldable.
Thank You, God, for the times we haven't been able to control our circumstances. They have reminded us that You are in control. Thank You, God, for Your ability to take what we consider 'tragedy' and turn it into a treasure. Thank You, God, for those You have called home to be with You. Their absence from this earth reminds us to keep our eyes fixed on heaven. Thank You, God, for the greatest gift You could ever give us: Your perfect Son's death on the cross on our behalf. And thank You not only for our eternal salvation, but for the salvation You afford us every day of our lives as You save us from ourselves, our foolishness, our own limited insights, and our frailties, in light of Your power and strength. Thank You, God, for all that You have allowed and not allowed in our lives. For we commit our lives anew to You and ask that You would continue to remind us, that You are God. Thank You, finally, that we can pray in the name of Jesus, who made our access to You and a personal relationship with You possible. Amen.

Our current 8th graders are preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation in May. If you are an adult and have not celebrated Confirmation and would like to participate in our formation this year, please let us know! Remember that you must be Confirmed and a registered and active parishioner to act as a sponsor or godparent, and most importantly, Confirmation deepens our baptismal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world. Through Confirmation our personal relationship with Christ is strengthened.

Thanks to Fr. Norm, Deacon Bob, all who witnessed and all who joined us on Tuesday, October 27 for our evening of prayer and reflection. We prayed the rosary and had time to reflect on each of the Luminous Mysteries. Our music ministry team of Paul Wilson and Hank Inman blessed the evening with their beautiful music. At the end of our service, we prayed the following prayer, which spoke of our connectedness and our unity, remaining strong when we are together: WE ARE LIKE GLASS PRAYER
Glass is a reminder of the strength and fragility that exists in every one of us.
Like glass, we are beautiful and luminous. Like glass, we are fragile and shatter without care.

This week our school focus is on safety. The faculty and staff will participate in an emergency management training session this Tuesday. Our school continues to follow the Ohio Department of Health, Ohio Department of Education, CDC, and Summit County Board of Health COVID-19 recommendations. We have not had a case of COVID-19 with our students, parents, faculty, or staff. We are truly blessed.
Our middle school students experienced a program, Life Act, which teaches the students how to identify depression. Later this month the seventh-grade class will participate in a Human Dignity training session. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Peace and blessings,
