Fr. Del’s Points to Ponder Thanksgiving is that day of the year when church and state, the sacred and the secular, faith and spirituality all meld into one expression of gratitude. Families and friends gather together to recognize, to one degree or another, that we are not owed anything from God. Everything we have and are is a pure gift from God. Somehow, all differences are put aside and, as the late Peter Gomes once preached at Memorial Chapel on Harvard’s campus, “We gather together with our wonderful, dysfunctional families.” Gathered with kith and kin we put our best foot forward to recognize our unity in giving thanks. Even so, there are some topics maybe better left off the table of thanks. A suggested list of topics that Catholics might avoid follows:
Partisan Politics. Jesus was not Democrat, Republican nor Independent. In fact, as Catholics, you already know that what we stand for is the Kingdom of God, which goes above and beyond any categories that a political stance embodies. Besides, studies show that most people will change churches before they will change their political party.
The Impeachment Process. Same reasons as above.Which child a parent loves more. It’s a different kind of love that parents have for
children than the kind of love that has favorites. Parents have “DNA love” that knows no end for a child, no matter how different they might be. Parents who want to have a little fun and fuel the fire should remember the words of Stephen Colbert: tell your kids that you have a favorite, but never tell them which one. OK, don’t do that.
The Pope. Same reasons as #1, with some crucial additions. It’s too easy to confuse Biblical justice with socialism. Love everybody, no exceptions, because we all have a right to the radical love that Jesus preached. Avoid the topic, it’s too easy to politicize church stuff.
Immigration. The United States Bishops give three principles that you already know: 1. People have the right to migrate to sustain their lives and the lives of their families. 2. A country has the right to regulate its borders and to control immigration. 3. A country must regulate its borders with justice and mercy. It’s probably still not a good idea to try to solve this issue at the dinner table.
No Shave November. It’s not polite to comment on a college student’s first attempt at a beard, nor prudent to point out how gray dad’s has come in.
So what should we talk about? God is good, all the time; all the time, God is good. (Thank you, Fr. Alex.) The homily on Thanksgiving morning. That we celebrate Thanksgiving each time we go to Mass. The Bears, Bills, Saints. Face-to-face conversations about what is really happening in people’s lives. A reminder that God is closer to us than we know. That we do not earn or merit blessings from God; that’s why they are a gift! That God loves us and there’s not a thing we can do to change that. Thank you, God.

preparing for Jesus’ return?
NOTES FROM THE STEWARDSHIP COMMISSIONSt. Vincent de Paul and St. Veronica School are Living, Teaching, and Proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ as they work together for the Thanksgiving Meal Program. St. Vincent de Paul volunteers have taken calls from late October through mid-November from our neighbors in the parish wishing for assistance with Thanksgiving dinner. Each class in St. Veronica School provides a different food item for the baskets. The turkeys and baskets will be distributed the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, typically serving 50-55 families.

Every gift is only $2.00 and will be wrapped up ready to go under your Christmas tree!
MASS PLUS – A NEW PARISH LEARNING OPPORTUNITYThe most important thing we do as a parish, Fr. Del always reminds us, is Sunday Mass. You know how Mass goes, what to do or say. But what is happening on a deeper level? How can you more deeply pray the Mass, and not just attend it?
This school year, the Faith Formation Commission is offering a monthly event called Mass Plus – an addition to 9:30 or 11:30 a.m. Mass. Stay after 9:30 or come early for 11:30 a.m., or come back if you’ve been to 4:00 or 8:00 p.m.! Adults and kids, 4th grade and up start together, then adults stay with Emily Besl and children go with Bill Frantz to explore the meaning of the Mass and why we do the things we do.
Each month, we’ll look at different parts of the Mass. Come to all or come when you can. ♦ for adults and older children (4th grade & up) ♦ once a month ♦ between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Masses on Sundays ♦ in the school cafeteria, 10:35 to 11:20 a.m. ♦ short, informal, 45 minutes
DATES: December 15, January 12, Febuary 9, March 8, April 19, May 17, June 14.
Mass Plus – Come to Mass, stay for more!

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is scheduled on Sundays, either at Mass or at 12:30 p.m. Expectant parents should plan on attending the Baptismal Preparation Program, held six times a year. Call the Parish Office to schedule the Baptism and Preparation Program. The Sacrament of Baptism for adults and school age children is usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil, along with the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Preparation occurs in steps and stages throughout the year with weekly meetings on Sunday after 9:30 a.m. Mass. Call Emily Besl at 688-3143, or the Parish Office for more information.
SACRAMENTS OF HEALING The Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation or Confession) is celebrated each Saturday, 2:30-3:30 p.m., or by appointment with the pastor. Seasonal Penance Services are also celebrated. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick may be scheduled by calling the pastor before a medical procedure, or in the event of a serious illness, or after each Mass on the fifth Sunday of the month. When hospitalized, please notify the Parish Office; this is the only way we know if a parishioner has been hospitalized. In case of medical emergency or death, call the Parish Office and follow prompts.
SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT The Sacrament of Marriage is scheduled by calling the pastor or deacon to begin the process of marriage preparation, at least six months prior to the anticipated wedding date. A date for the wedding is set only after meeting with the pastor or deacon. Discernment for the Sacrament of Orders (ordination to the Priesthood and Diaconate) is facilitated by contacting the pastor or Vocation Director of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Those interested in pursuing Religious Life may also make these contacts.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Religious Education Program (R.E.P.) for children (ages 3 years through 8th Grade) begins each year in September and ends in May. Call Theresa Kearney, Coordinator of Children’s Faith Formation, or Barb Farwick, Administrative Assistant, at 688-3155 for more information.
