From the Rector,

I used this column to talk a bit about change last month.  Since then we have had the opportunity to take a survey about change.  As might be expected, all this talk about change makes some of us happy and excited. Others it makes nervous and suspicious.  And some of us didn’t even no ce that the word change might be a cause for either response.

First of all, this survey was not a  precursor to change that is already planned.   It is not about something that the Rector or  the Staff or the Wardens or the Vestry  intended to “spring on” the Parish, like an  ambush.  There is a quote from C.S.  Lewis, Le ers to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer:

“Novelty may fix our a en on not even on the service but on the celebrant. You know what I mean. Try as one may to exclude it, the ques on "What on earth is he up to now?" will intrude. It lays one's devo on waste. There is really some excuse for the man who said, "I wish they'd remember that the charge to Peter was Feed my sheep; not Try experiments on my rats, or even, Teach my performing dogs new tricks.”

So please don’t worry that we are  going to change the liturgy at the principal  service in radical ways. Neither was the survey designed to prepare for the conversa on about full and inten onal inclusion of LGBT persons  or inclusive language or changes in outreach  or music or in how we manage our money.  There is no hidden agenda.

The survey was suggested by the  Congrega onal Development Team and agreed to by the Vestry simply to get a feel for how we as a congrega on view our readiness for the future.   I encouraged the idea simply to get a be er idea of how we understand ourselves; our openness to new things, our strength and resiliency in the face of the change that the  future always brings.

Before I came to serve as your Rector, St. Timothy’s was described to me as a “broad” church; a church that embraces a wide spec‐trum of ideas and philosophies comfortably; a church that is warm and loving toward one  another, despite our differences.  That is my experience.  This is one of the most welcoming parishes I have ever known.  That is one thing I hope will never change.

It is this confidence in your love for one another that gives me courage to speak  honestly about my convic ons and my passions.  I hope that you will also feel that you have something important to say and that your sense of God’s call on your life can find expression here in this gathering of God’s people we call  St. Timothy’s.  It is our openness to God and to one another that will make space for new  expressions of thankfulness and praise.

Love,

Marvin

The sympathy of the parish is extended to David Neise on the death of his sister, Marcella M. Yocum.

Sunday A ernoon—July 13, 2014  To The Wonderful People of Saint Timothy’s—    What can we possibly say a er this morning but a huge and hear elt Thank You!!  It  truly was an incredible send off into re rement and the generous monetary gi s were  extraordinary.  You are indeed fabulous and we love you!   Thank you!   Both Pam and I have cherished every minute of our  me at Saint Timothy’s.  The years have passed quickly and have been rich and full.  From the ini al mee ngs I had with Bob Stross (Senior Warden) and Father Frank Crumbaugh (Rector) almost twenty years ago when we  explored and ar culated a vision for the liturgy and music at St. Tim’s right up un l today the adventure has been pleasant, exci ng, and sa sfying!     The early vision (or dream, really)  was to make worship at St. Timothy’s singularly  beau ful and joyful by incorpora ng music in new and crea ve ways while honoring our  Anglican heritage.  What made this plan somewhat unique was that we were to build a Music Ministry that included a large and diverse group of volunteer musicians of all kinds to support that dream. Our hope was to have this ministry not operate as a separate en ty, but for its members to be totally integrated into Parish life.  The wonderful news is that because the parish quickly embraced and supported this vision and con nued to support this unique music ministry for over nineteen years, the ini al dream is certainly a reality!  Thank you for that support!    St. Tim’s is an awesome parish!  Not only are we a parish that honors God through  beau ful, joyful, and crea ve worship and music, but we honor God through outreach and  service.  In addi on, the sense of community here is second to none.  This is, indeed, a place where God is honored and a place where I have had the pleasure of a emp ng to do God’s work!   Thank you for your friendships, fellowship, hospitality, and support.  Thank you also for the many one on one conversa ons and hugs this morning and over the last few weeks and months, the meaningful cards, notes, and emails, and most of all for your love.   Thank you for being the warm, wonderful and good people that you are.  We love  St. Tim’s and wish the very best for this Parish.  Please know, as I men oned this morning, that we are not leaving your friendships‐‐‐just re ring from being the Director of Music.  Thank you, again!!   Love,  Dean (and Pam) Bye

Love,

Marvin
