Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy. — Leviticus 19:2b

Fasting & Abstinence “Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fast-ing and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during

Lent are obligatory days of abstinence,” says the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Most Catholics already knew as much, but there is often confusion about what fasting and abstinence really means.

We’re here to help!

1) Abstinence on all the Fridays of Lent, and on Ash

Wednesday and Good Friday.

*No meat may be eaten on days of abstinence.

*Catholics 14 years and older are bound to abstain from meat.

Invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt.

2) Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

*Fasting means having only one full meal to maintain one's

strength. Two smaller, meatless and penitential meals are

permitted according to one's needs, but they should not together

equal the one full meal. Eating solid foods between meals is not

permitted.

*Catholics who have reached the completion of the eighteenth

year to the beginning of the sixtieth year are bound to fast.

Again, invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt.

3) Friday Abstinence Outside of Lent

It should be noted that Fridays throughout the year

are designated days of penance. The Code of Canon Law states

that Friday is a day of abstinence from meat throughout the

year. The American Bishops have allowed us to choose a

different form of penance rather than abstaining from meat, but

there must be some form of penance, for this is the day we

commemorate Christ's suffering and death. The bishops stress

that "among the works of voluntary self-denial and personal

penance...we give first place to abstinence from flesh meat"

(Pastoral Statement on Fasting and Abstinence).

Making a Good Lent

The season of Lent is one of prayer, fasting, almsgiving and sacrifice to prepare us for the suffering of the Passion and the victory of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This year join with your fellow parishioners on that hopeful journey of trans-formation, growing closer to Christ and each other. Beginning March 4th each Wednesday of Lent from 5:20 to 6:40 we will gather for a simple supper, faith

sharing, discussion and prayer. Supper will begin at 5:30.

A schedule for the season is available at the entrance of church, where you can sign up to attend, and to bring a soup if you are able.

ST. JOSEPH’S CCW (Catholic Council of Women)

St. Joseph’s CCW meets twice each year, usually in a member’s home. Our next meeting will be April 22 at Rita Pulver’s house. Our mission is simple, we “help out”. Some of our activities, we made new banners for the church entryway, we take care of altar flowers, organize Christmas gift baskets for the elderly and shut-ins of our parish, we helped with the Community Club pie & ice cream benefit at the depot, helped with the

Neighborhood Table and helped provide for Library Summer Lunches at the Community Library. We keep open hearts and minds for other areas where we can be of service.

The CCW invites any women of the parish to attend our meetings - they are always informative and enjoyable.
