Prayer Crusade Dear Church Family,

Our Heavenly Father sees our needs and hears our pray-

ers. He knows that our parish needs a building where we

will hold formation classes for youth and adults and where

we can celebrate with joyful activities regardless of the

weather. Let us rely upon Christ’s promise that if we ask,

we will receive. Prayer is the foundation of every lasting

structure. The prayers of our St. Thomas the Apostle

Catholic Community for the success of our building cam-

paign will ensure its success. When the foundation of this

building is formed from our prayers, it will unfold and

endure. Please pray the Campaign prayer daily for the

success of this endeavor.

Stewardship Reflection . . . That we invest equally in our heavenly home as we do in our earthly home. “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.” (Genesis 15:7) Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether your home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do you show your gratitude to God for the home He has given you? Do you make a sacrifice of any kind? Do you return any of your finances to God, investing equally in your eternal home just as you invest in your earthly home?

Reflexiones de Mayordomía . . .

• The Fire of Your Love: The First Commandment

By Will Oliver

The First Commandment, along with the next two, are about the primacy of God. These Commandments are how we are to worship God and serve Him all the days of our lives. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (2083-2141), the First Commandment embraces faith, hope, and charity, but within these three theological virtues, we can fall away from God because of sin. If we lose our faith because we come to doubt (incredulity), or worse, we deny God, His truths, and our Catholic faith (heresy), we have sinned. If we start to despair, lose hope in His salvation and thus our trust in God, we have sinned. Still further, if we presume to know better than God or presume that He will grant us forgiveness, but do nothing to ask for it, then we have also sinned. And we can sin against God’s love for us if we become indifferent toward Him, cease to be grateful for His love, grow lazy about His love (acedia), or worse, finding ourselves having or showing hatred toward Him.

When it comes to serving the Lord, we must adore Him, offer our prayers, and be willing to sacrifice for His love. We sin if we make a vow before God and later break it or if we fail in our du-ties to serve Him as defined by His Commandments, His Son, and His Church.

The First Commandment also teaches us that we must worship no one but God. This includes the sin of idolatry, worshipping idols (graven images). The best example was when Moses went up Mount Sinai to receive the 10 Commandments - his followers created a golden calf and danced around it, worshipping the idol. When I was young, I thought that was one of the silliest ideas I had ever heard, and thought no one would ever do that today. Unfortunately, I am now older and know better – just look at the annual pagan festival each year in Nevada called “Burning Man,” – sadly, the sin lives on.

The sin of idolatry can also include the worship of money, which is often a problem in a coun-try as wealthy as ours. The sin of superstition also falls under this commandment, for if we believe some charm, object, or article of clothing, like a sport’s jersey, brings us or our team good luck, then we have sinned against God. Still further, divination and magic fall under this Commandment, so visiting palm readers, using tarot cards, or reading one’s horoscope in the newspaper, especially if one believes in them, is a sin.

We also violate the First Commandment if we become irreligious, such as testing God (“if you really love me, you will . . . “); committing profane acts in a place of worship, especially regard-ing the sacraments, and worst of all, the Eucharist; or buying and selling spiritual favors (simony). People who also deny God’s existence (atheists) or avoid Him altogether (agnostics), also violate this first of God’s Commandments.

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bond-age. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jeal-ous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing merciful love to thousands of those who love me and keep my com-mandments” (Deuteronomy 5:6-10).

CHURCH SECURITY INFORMATION

Following the church shootings last year near San Antonio the parish's Security Committee has taken steps ensure the safety of all St. Thomas the Apostle parishioners. The first step restricts access to the church during liturgical services. Once Mass has begun all doors into the church will be locked from the inside with the exception of the double doors facing 16th Street. Anyone arriving late for Mass will only be able to enter the church through the 16th Street doors. Parishioners will be able to exit the church through any of the locked doors as well as the doors facing 16th Street. Signs will be posted around the church building to remind parishioners of the locked doors. The staff at St. Thomas the Apostle Church takes the safety and security of all the parishioners very seriously. We are confident that the steps taken at this time will minimize any problematic incidents.
