SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - JULY 30, 2017

Dear Parishioners and Friends: Today is about wisdom! In the first reading, God said to Solomon

in a dream, “Ask something of me, and I will give it to you.” Solomon does not ask for a long life or riches, but he asks for the treasure of a wise and understanding heart. Of all the possibili es that filled Solomon’s head, he chose the gi of wisdom that is unequaled. Why? He set his priori es to match what is important to God. Only the treasure that is Jesus sa sfies.

From Solomon, we learn that seeking happiness in a world of comfort finds monotony, seeking pleasure finds discontent, looking for power and affluence leads to disillusion. Life can be devoid of meaning if it is devoid of Jesus!

The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field.

In the Gospel, Ma hew portrays the farmer in a world of drab monotony. But the discovery of the hidden treasure in the field offers the possibility of a new life. He reverses his past by selling all that he has, and addresses the challenge of his

new world. Ma hew uses this parable to teach us that the kingdom of heaven is a surprise discovery …a treasure buried in a field. He tells us, “Make

Christ your everlas ng treasure and you will not be disappointed.” The kingdom as rooted in the person of Jesus gives true meaning and direc on to one’s life. The kingdom of heaven is the greatest treasure, for to inherit this treasure is to a ain eternal life with God. “Thy Kingdom Come” through prayer and example!

STAR COMMUNITY HOME - provides housing for homeless women and children. Please bring your gi s of non-perishable food items such as cereal, canned food, beans, rice, tuna, etc. and place them on the table by the side door in St. Thomas Church.

ST. BONIFACE HOMELESS - They are in need of socks for the homeless who shelter in the Church during the day. Please place the socks in the baskets at St. Monica and St. Thomas.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD PROGRAM - A Children’s Liturgy Program for St. Thomas the Apostle Parish is held on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month from September 2017 to June 2018 during the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Children ages 3-6 experience God’s word in an age-appropriate way. Before the readings, the children will be invited up for a blessing and dismissed to hear the message of the Gospel in a more meaningful way. PHILIPPINE MADRIGAL SINGERS will perform on Sat., August 12, 7:30 pm at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 1555 39th Ave., San Francisco. Winners of the Grand Prix in the Interna onal Choral Compe on in Italy in 2016, the Philippine Madrigal Singers kick off their U.S. and European 2017 tour with this San Francisco concert, “Voices of Peace.” Fr. Arnold Zamora, pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Parish, is a former member, composer, and arranger for the choir, and it con nues to perform some of his works.
