The American Revolution was fought for independence from King George, after all. Nonetheless, today every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Je- sus Christ, King of the Universe. Today’s feast in- vites us to look beyond our national loyalties and rejoice in our primary identity. We are children of God in Jesus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it’s like to belong to God’s king- dom. The book of Samuel captures the deep long- ing of the Israelites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul reminds the Colossians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beautiful hymn. Finally, Luke’s Gospel calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be—a suf- fering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise. PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

Since December 8, 2019 is the Sec-ond Sunday of Advent, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is transferred to Monday, December 9, 2019. The ob-ligation to attend Mass, however,

does not transfer. The Optional Memorial of Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, December 9, is omitted this year.

THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF MARY

THE STORY OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

We will have the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Fri-day, December 6th, from 9:00am to 9:00pm. Please come and join us for Adora-tion on this First Friday. We invite you to sign up for an

hour of adoration. The sign-up sheet is on the parish bulletin board in the church hall. Please consider signing up for an hour to ensure we have every hour covered, and hopefully more than one person per hour can come. We will have the celebration of mass at 12:00pm.

BLESSED SACRAMENT ADORATION

We want to thank you for your great help and for your fidelity to St. Thomas Aquinas Church and to Jesus Christ. This year we have been very blessed as a parish and we hope that you too as families are blessed. We thank God for the many gifts and blessings that we receive on a daily basis. Happy Thanksgiving and everyone have a happy day with your family and friends.

We apologize because last week we did not have the church bulletin available on time.

The feast in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe goes back to the 16th century. Chronicles of that period tell us the story. A poor Indian named Cuauhtlatohuac was bap-tized and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57-year-old widower, and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning Decem-ber 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady. Juan was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared, and within it stood an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own lan-guage and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared. Eventually the bishop told Juan to have the lady give him a sign. About this same time Juan’s un-cle became seriously ill. This led poor Juan to try to avoid the lady. Nevertheless the lady found Juan, assured him that his uncle would recover, and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bish-op in his cape or tilma. On December 12, when Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees. On the tilma where the roses had been appeared an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac.

We will honor our Lady of Guadalupe here at St. Thomas on December 12:

Gospel: Lk 23:35-43

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

Blessed is the kingdom of our fa-ther David that is to come! R. Alle-

luia, alleluia.

R. Aleluya, aleluya. ¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor!

¡Bendito el reino que llega, el reino de nuestro padre David! R. Aleluya.

The rulers sneered at Jesus and said, "He saved others, let him save him-self if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God." Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself." Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews." Now one of the criminals hanging there re-viled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us." The other, however, re-buking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condem-nation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corre-sponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal." Then he said, "Jesus, re-member me when you come into your king-dom." He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
