First Sunday of Advent November 27, 2016 “You . . . must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” — Matthew 24:44 BE PREPARED Be prepared. It’s that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is focused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we

prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can’t escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these tasks? The Lord often comes to us in wonderfully surprising ways. Let us be prepared. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

First Sunday of Advent Page 4

THE ADVENT SEASON Today we begin the Season of Advent which the church states has a two-fold character. It is a time of preparation for the Solemnities of Christmas in which the first coming of the Son of God to humanity is remembered and by remembrance of this, our hearts and minds are led to look forward to Christ`s second coming at the end of time. Advent is a period of devout and expectant delight. We enter this season for four weeks and during these weeks we prepare ourselves to receive Christ our Light renewed in our lives and in our homes. A tradition in the Catholic Church is for each family to gather around an Advent wreath in their home and to pray together. An Advent wreath is a wreath of laurel, spruce or similar foliage with four candles that are lit successively in the weeks of Advent to symbolize the light, the birth of Christ, brought into the world. Traditionally, three of the candles are purple, the color of the kings and of penance. A rose-colored candle is used to mark the Third Sunday of Advent as a time to rejoice over the closeness of Christmas and the coming of Christ. A suggestion might be to try to eat dinner together and light the candles each week saying this prayer or using something similar: " O God, as light comes from this candle, may the blessing of Jesus comes to us, warming our hearts and brightening our way. May Christ our Savior bring life into the darkness of this world, and to us, as we wait for his second coming". Take some time each day to ask yourself: " How hast the light of Christ influenced my day?" The light grows brighter as we enter each week. Try to abstain from jumping right into Christmas these days. Allow yourself a time of preparation, a time of prayer and relaxation. Observe Advent Season as it is to be observed and enter Christmas Season when it arrives, December 24th, ready to receive Jesus Christ who comes into your lives. May the light of Christ penetrate into your hearts and uplift you in these days. Fr Innocent Subiza Parochial Administrator

Estemos preparados.
