St. Tarcissus Fifth Sunday of Easter 2

From the Desk of the Pastor As of the writing of this bulletin article the Archdiocese hasn’t yet released the new sacramental guidelines based on the new 10-person limit on public gatherings that the governor allowed. I promise to let you know as soon as I find out and I know this would be especially important for upcoming baptisms, funerals and weddings. We will probably be able to open the church soon as well for prayer and a more normal experience of the sacrament of confession. I am available for walking, socially distanced confession now if you’d like to schedule a time. Our unification committee from the three parishes met again last night for the second time and some good work is being done. We are reviewing when good dates might be for last Masses at each of the sites, including St. Taricssus Parish. While our church building will remain open and used, St. Tarcissus parish will officially be closed and St. Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish will be created on July 1st. Our St. Tarcissus Parish last Sunday Mass will be on June 28th. We haven’t worked out the details of what kind of remembrances or special things could be done to help offer a sense of closure, but I will keep you posted. Even in June we may not be able to have large gatherings yet so it may be a live streamed Mass, but we’ll do what we can. Last week I had the privilege of being at the St. Cornelius Food pantry and see some of the amazing work being done in these hard times to help those in need. Deacon John Rottman and other volunteers from St. Cornelius along with our own Dave McNaughton, Melisa and Alex Moroko and Kim Hyland were hard at work organizing and distributing food. I had the chance to visit with the people looking for help in those days and was able to talk and pray with them and give them a blessing. I even was asked for a confession.

Some people who were alone at home were also glad for a little company and someone

to talk to. It was a very moving experience and I can tell you that many of the patrons never had the need to go to a food pantry before. They were so grateful for the kindness and help. Our time and generosity given to those in need really is doing the Lord’s work and means so much, please continue to contribute in the ways that you can. The coach Lou G. drop boxes are located in the convent courtyard for your convenience.

In today’s first reading we heard the Apostle Peter say: “It is not right for us to

neglect the word of God to wait at table.” There’s no more basic bodily need than for food. And yet even this was not the only concern of the Apostles. Because the Apostles had been commissioned by Christ to preach the Gospel which includes meeting the needs of body and soul. That’s why the Apostles decided to “devote themselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

As we try to help each other financially or with food, we know we have other needs as

well. We might be lonely and want a visit and someone to talk to. We might be afraid or anxious about the future and are looking for hope. Ultimately, only the Lord is in charge and can address these deeper needs that we have. May we in Jesus’ name try to help each other as best we can so that the Lord can say of us “Look how my disciples love one another.” God bless you, Fr. Mike Grisolano

In the Gospel today, Jesus says “…whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, be cause I am going to the Father. Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater than you think. The coins placed in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box bring Christ love and compassion to the poor. During this difficult times is there a family you know who

needs assistance, please call the St Tarcissus Rectory and leave a message for the St Vincent de Paul Society so that together we can bring peace to those who are hungry.

Coronavirus Prayer Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

St. Cornelius Food Pantry Adapts to Covid-19 and Continues to Serve As the Covid-19 health crisis emerged, St. Cornelius Food Pantry saw decreases in food con-tributions and patrons visiting, but now is maintaining stock and serving more patrons. This is due to the generous support of the parishioners of St. Cornelius, St. Tarcissus and St. Thecla. The health crisis also caused many of the dedicated and longest serving volunteers to suspend their service, but new volunteers are now providing support. A continuous supply of food do-nations have been flowing into the Coach Louie G. sheds located in the Parish Center court-yard of St. Tars, and to the front door of the St. Cornelius Rectory. In addition, Shop & Save Grocery has been a champion for the pantry and its largest contribu-tor. Recently, Shop & Save matched a large donation made by the Copernicus Center, and with the help of the Chicago Police of the 16th District, donated and delivered 80 grocery bags full of food. The food pantry also partnered with the Greater Chicago Food Depository and can now provide a 30 lb. box of food to each patron. Moving forward the pantry will need you. Please support the pantry by regularly dropping off non-perishable food to either the Coach Louie G. sheds in the St. Tarcissus Parish Center courtyard or to the front door of the St. Cornelius Rectory, 5205 N. Lieb. You can also write a check made out to the St. Cornelius Food Pantry that can be mailed or dropped off at either rectory. Also pray for our patrons and volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please call either rectory and leave your contact infor-mation. The pantry distributes food every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1 pm to 2 pm at the rear of St. Cornelius Church.

Saint Thomas Aquinas defined “spiritual communion” as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Holy Sacrament and a loving embrace as though we had already received Him. Saint Teresa of Avila wrote: “When you cannot receive Communion and cannot attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed on you.”

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

SAINT DAMIEN JOSEPH DE VEUSTER OF MOLOKA’I (1840-1889) - May 10 In the mid-1990s, a heavily bearded, bespectacled Robin Williams appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, whose host was clearly taken aback. Letterman in-quired as to why the wild look. Uncharacteristically subdued, the usually manic comic responded that he was producing and starring in a movie about a most extraordinarily compassionate man, Damien, the Leper Priest of Moloka’i. Some saints transcend religious and ethnic boundaries to touch the heart that beats in each human being: Francis of Assisi; Mother Teresa; and, though Williams’ film was never completed, his admiration speaks, as does Damien’s statue outside the capitol in Honolulu, of this newest saint’s universal appeal. Far from his native Flan-

ders’ idyllic beauty and rich culture, Damien volunteered to bear Christ’s light into Moloka’i’s bleak leper colony, building decent homes, opening schools, establishing clinics, planting farms, sharing the sufferings—and the social stigma—of those with whom he delighted to identify: “We lepers,” he would proudly say when finally he contracted leprosy. Saint Damien challenges us to identify the lepers of our own day, to examine our compassion for and our identification with them.
