VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2020

PLANNING HAS BEGUN TO BRING VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL BACK TO ST. SIMON THIS SUMMER. WITH ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS WE CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN. MANY (ESPECIALLY OUR KIDS!!) HAVE MISSED THIS ANNUAL WEEK OF FUN AND FAITH. PLEASE PRAYERFULLY CONSIDER CONTRIBUTING SOME TIME TO ASSIST IN THIS EFFORT AND CONTACT: DEACON DAVE AT 314-842-3848 (EXT. 120) OR EMAIL

AT [email protected].

A PLANNING MEETING WILL BE HELD IN FEBRUARY TO DISCUSS DETAILS AND NEXT STEPS.

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s readings reflect on our communal identity as disciples. Before we begin Lent together in a few days, we take time to appreci-ate what God has done by giving us our family of faith. In Leviticus, God tells Moses to “speak to the whole Israelite community” and give them instructions for living in love. Moses passes along the mes-sage—to each and every believ-er—that God’s people must strive

together for holiness. Saint Paul echoes this message, insisting that we are indeed God’s holy children. As temples of the Spirit, we belong to Christ and to one another. This mutual belonging is a blessing and a challenge. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus sets a high bar for Christian community: his followers must love not only those who are easy to love, but also the people who upset us. Together, let us ask God to give us this kind of love.

I AM THE LORD Today’s first reading concludes in classic Levitical style: “I am the LORD.” Over and over again, the book of Leviticus punctu-ates its paragraphs with that simple statement: “I am the LORD.” Relentlessly repeating that phrase, the word of God reminds us that God is the LORD—and we are not. We did not construct the world; we did not create ourselves. Remembering our status as mere creatures comes as a shock to us at times, especially when we flex and pose as masters of our own tiny universes. On the other hand, knowing we are “merely” God’s beloved children can free us. When we accept that God is the source and summit of all wisdom, we approach life with a grow-ing stillness, an openness to God’s powerful action in the world. HOLY AND PERFECT Our openness to God’s powerful action helps us understand Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel, when he demands that we be-come “perfect.” Most of us shudder at the thought of having to be perfect. The idea of achieving perfection seems impossible, frankly. But, just before despair sets in, we recall that we are merely creatures. If God wants us to be “holy” and “perfect,” as today’s readings emphasize, then God will provide all we need to chip away at our imperfections. If we nurse a hateful grudge against someone and cannot imagine being free of the resent-ment, God can help. If we harm our own bodies through bad habits, the holy Spirit can strengthen our resolve and transform our daily behavior. If we long for advantage over others, if we are disgusted by the thought of loving “unworthy” people, if we overwhelmingly prefer comfort and stability over the wildness of lavish generosity—Jesus Christ, King of glory, can convert our timid hearts. These transformations take time, patience, and prayer. Sitting quietly to reflect over today’s readings is an ex-cellent kind of prayer, and an inspiring way to begin. Copyright © J. S. Ash Wednesday—February 26th We will have the distribution of ashes, the traditional beginning of the Lenten season, at our three Masses on Ash Wednesday: 6:30am, 8:15am, and 7pm. The 8:15am Mass will be an all-school Mass with our students. We will also host a fish fry on Ash Wednesday – more details about that can be found elsewhere in this bulletin.

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time: In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges us by saying: “You must be perfected as your heavenly Father is perfect.” This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist our neighbors in need by providing food, assistance for utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!

Cases for Smiles Pillowcase Event The Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary is once again hosting a pillowcase sewing event for the organization, Case for Smiles. We will be sewing pillowcases for children going through treatments at area children’s hospitals. No sewing skills are needed as there are many tasks that do not involve sewing (and some that do!). This fun event is happening on Wednesday, March 4th from 6:30 to 9:00 pm in the Lower Church Hall. You do not have to stay the entire time. You can come and help as long as you want. You may have so much fun, you won’t want to leave! We welcome anyone who wants to come and have fun while helping children with cancer and other long term illnesses. All parishioners (and their friends, family and neighbors) are invited to join us in making brightly colored pillowcases for children in the hospital going through chemo and other lifesaving treatments. This event is not limited to adults. If anyone has any questions, call Diane at 845-8442. See you on March 4th! We are also collecting 100% cotton material in bright, child friendly prints and colors. Please drop off material donations in the marked bin in the church lobby before March 4th.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Consider setting aside some time now to attend the Stations of the Cross in our church every Friday during Lent at 7:00 PM starting Friday February 28th through March 27th. The “Living Stations” will be prayed on Friday April 3 at 7:30 pm. The tradition of praying the Stations of the Cross offers us the

opportunity to enter into the Mystery of Jesus’ total gift of Himself and will enrich your Lenten Experience of God’s love for us all.
