    REV. MSGR. RICHARDKREKELBERG

    PASTORSCORNER

The keys to the carThe keys to the house

How about, Dad, may I have thekeys to the Kingdom of Heaven?

We have before us in the Gospeltoday bold and famous words of

confession and faith from Simon bar-Jonah, renamed PETER; and amazingwords from Jesus that bestowposition and authoritythe giving toPeter of the keys of the Kingdom ofHeaven. Well, there you have it!There is hardly anything in all ofscripture that screams ROMANCATHOLIC more loudly than thesewords. Faith and assent to Peterskeys along with the Churchs powerto bind and loose continues both to

be our remaining major specificdifference from most Christiandenominations and, what is more, apersistent stumbling block to theecumenical process.

If we were to think of the keys andthe authority to bind and loose asitems of clothing, how would youdescribe the differences, if any, between popes St. John Paul,Benedict, and Francis as to how theylooked in them or wore them? Now

consider there have been 265 popessince St. Peter. All have acceptedThe Fishermans Ring in their owntime and their own place (notnecessarily Rome). All have expectedthe faithful to place their trust in theauthority given them.

Over 41 years I have heard people(Roman Catholics) talk about thereigning pope and I have distinctlyrecognized a variance in level oftrustusually falling along lines ofconservative/liberal, with not muchroom in between. But isnt theresomething less given to interpretationabout the authority of the pope? Isntthere more to it than the mood or thepersonality of the reigning Bishop ofRome? Right now, of course, we havea pope and a pope emeritus. Whats aCatholic to think? What are we tellingour children?

No bragging here, but actually thewhole authority of the pope and eventhe whole infallibility thing have notbeen problems for me my entirepriesthood. That is because I figuredout a long time ago (and was taughtvery well) that the popes authority andhis infallibility are not about him, but

about Jesus Way, Truth, and Lifeabiding in His Church. Of what goodwould our Church be, or of whatworth, if Jesus truth was not in it?For any pope, for any ecumenicalcouncil, or for all the faithful incommunion of belief, only DivineAssistance renders Divine Truthaccessible and only in matters of faithand morals (that is, in matters of whatwe believe and what we hold sacred andhow we conduct ourselves according towhat we believe). So whats theproblem? No problem.

Anyway, for us mere mortals (includingthe one who is currently holding TheKeys in Rome), it is important to notethat next Sundays gospel passagesame chapter of Matthew (16)followsthe giving of the keys with one of theworst tongue lashings ever to beuttered from Jesus mouth, and it isaimed at Mr. Keys of the KingdomhimselfPETER. For crying out loud,Jesus calls him Satan! I guess werejust never too old or too importantenough not to get spanked, if needed.Has Msgr. Richard ever been spanked(figuratively of course) by his superiors?Mind your own business.

    The Keys to the Kingdom

    Dear Parishioners,

Msgr. RichardDuring this time of acute persecution of Christians, Archbishop Jos H. Gomez asks us to consider this prayer, composed by His Beatitude Louis Rafael Sako, Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Iraq

Lord, The plight of our country is deep and the suffering of Christians is severe and frightening. Therefore, we ask you Lord to spare our lives, and to grant us patience, and courage to continue ourwitness of Christian values with trust and hope.Lord, peace is the foundation of life; Grant us the peace and stability that will enable us to live witheach other without fear and anxiety, and with dignity and joy.Glory be to you forever.

    Featured Saint

    St. Monica

    Although Monica was

a Christian, herparents gave her inmarriage to a pagan,

Patricius, who lived in her hometownof Tagaste in North Africa. Patriciushad some redeeming features but healso had a violent temper. Monica alsohad to bear with a cantankerousmother-in-law who lived in her home.Monicas prayers and example finallywon her husband and mother-in-law toChristianity. Her husband died in 371,

one year after his baptism.Monica oldest son, Augustine, is themost famous of her three children. Atthe time of his fathers death,Augustine was 17 and a rhetoricstudent in Carthage. Monica wasdistressed to learn that her son hadaccepted the Manichean heresy (allflesh is evil) and was living an immorallife. For a while, she refused to let himeat or sleep in her house. Then onenight she had a vision that assured her

Augustine would return to the faith. From that time on, she stayed close toher son, praying and fasting for him.

When he was 29, Augustine decided togo to Rome to teach rhetoric. Monicafollowed him. She arrived in Romeonly to find that he had left for Milan.Although travel was difficult, Monicapursued him to Milan. In Milan,Augustine came under the influence ofthe bishop, St. Ambrose, who alsobecame Monicas spiritual director.

She continued her prayers forAugustine for over 17 years and atEaster, 387, St. Ambrose baptizedAugustine. Although no one else wasaware of it, Monica knew her life wasnear the end. Almost all we knowabout St. Monica is in the writings ofSt. Augustine, especially his Confessions.

Introducing a new regular Bulletin article: We are introducingthis question and answer section to respond to questions about ourparish Capital Campaign. Questions may be dropped off at theParish Office or submitted by email to: [email protected] include contact information for a personal response if we areunable to publish your question.

    CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Q & A

Has a Master Plan Design already beendecided?

No. As the First Phase Goalsrepairing andrenovating the church; purchasing a priests residence;restoring Gara Hall as the Jewel of our parish; andpossibly requiring new construction to improve theschoolwere presented to the parish it soon becameclear that a Master Plan for the entire property neededto be completed. As a result of Parish studies andsurveys over the past seven years, its inevitable a

Master Plan would emerge, enabling us to make thedecisions for Phase One that are in the best interests ofthe parish and school, short and long term.

In late May, Msgr. Richard put in place a DesignCommission, made up of representatives of theparish and school, architects and other professionals. The charge given to them was to review the researchand studies and come up with a Master Plan Designfor our facilities. These dedicated and giftedvolunteers have been meeting 3 to 4 hours eachweek over the summer. Their hard work anddedication have now brought us the prospect of

adopting a Master Plan that will honor all theresearch that has been done, and will allow us, in thecoming months, to present this Plan to the parish, the City of Sierra Madre and the Archdiocese.

In a few weeks, their finished work will beintroduced to the parish. You will be amazed at thecreativity and thoroughness of their efforts.

Watch for an insert in next weeks bulletin introducingthe members of the Design Commission.
