Baptisms First Sunday of the month after the Noon Mass. Registration and Catechesis are prerequisites. Please contact the Parish Office.

Marriages Contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament!

Reconciliation and First Eucharist Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Religious Education Program or St. Rita Elementary School.

Confirmation A two-year program for freshman/sophomore age teens. Please apply through the Youth Ministry Program.

Communion for the Sick and Homebound St. Rita Eucharistic Ministers provide Communion home visits. Contact the Parish Office.

Anointing of the Sick and Funeral Liturgies Please notify us for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying which brings Our Lord’s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient.

If your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral director; refer you to our Bereavement Ministry and Music Ministry; and offer you helpful guidelines that will aid in the selection of readings for a Mass or Memorial Service. We know this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is here for you. Please understand we only have one resident priest; sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

ST. RITA CATHOLIC PARISH 14th Sunday of Ordinary Time • July 5, 2020

PASTOR’S CORNER 3

Dear Parishioners and Visitors:

Recently I discovered a quote that said: “Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.” I was saddened to think that doing right should astonish people. Shouldn’t we always try to do right? In our second reading today Paul writes to the community of believers in Rome and tells them how they can do right: it is through living in the spirit. “If we live according to the flesh or according to the world we will die, but if we live according to the Spirit, we will live.” Paul also says, “we will have life in our mortal bodies, through the Spirit that dwells in us.” Only through God’s Holy Spirit can we do right. If you find doing right a burden and a huge challenge then hear these words of Jesus from today’s gospel: “Come to me, all who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Jesus will give us rest, refreshment and strength to do the right. Let us all join together in living by the Spirit and doing what is right, and if that astonishes others – wonderful. May God’s blessing be with you all.

—Fr. Tom

Second Reading — The one who raised Christ from death will give life to your mortal bodies also (Romans 8:9, 11-13).

4 LITURGY, WORSHIP, AND COMMUNITY

Keep these intentions in your heart as you make your spiritual communion

while public Mass restrictions are in place.

Jim and Alice Cobbin have posted some episodes of Catholic Bible Study on YouTube. Join with them in examining the Johannine and Petrine, James, and Pastoral epistles. Volunteers Needed

The reopening of our St. Rita Church to public Masses and private prayer is incumbent upon having trained volunteers available to serve and ensure our health and safety is prioritized.

We need many volunteers who are willing to be trained and to serve as monitors to ensure that the social distancing, seating, and surface cleaning protocols are followed at each Mass and when the church is open for visits. Without these volunteers, our times for the church being open would need to be curtailed.

If you are interested in volunteering, p l e a s e v i s i t h t t p : / /w w w . r o t u n d a s o f t w a r e . c o m /ministry/saint_rita?enroll=1 or email [email protected] or call the Parish Office at 626-355-1292. We thank you in advance for your willingness to be part of such an important ministry and ultimately allow us to come together and commune in person once again as Jesus taught us.

Let us welcome Mrs. Adela Solis, new principal of St. Rita School!

St. Rita School is welcoming a veteran educator as its new principal. On July 1, Adela Solis took the reigns of our top-performing school known for its strong community, and its academic and athletic achievements.

After spending nine years as a principal in Santa Ana with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, her hiring at an Archdiocese of Los Angeles school is a homecoming of sorts. Solis is a proud product of Catholic education in LA, attending schools as a child and working 25 years previously as a teacher and principal at various schools across the LA diocese.

Solis will lead the St. Rita School community as it enters its 99th year. Accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association and WASC, St. Rita students consistently deliver top Math scores across the diocese. The school is home to several CYO championships in various sports and has the highest ranking for a single grade school.

Solis and her two siblings were the first members of their family to earn a high school diploma and all three pursued careers in education. She has a B.A. in English from San Francisco State University and a M.S. in Educational Leadership from Mount St. Mary’s College. Solis is married to Mike, her husband of 36 years, and they have two sons, Nicholas and Michael. Both also attended Catholic schools. While principal at St. Madeleine School in Pomona, Solis helped the archdiocese establish and implement a new model for Catholic education in the Pomona Valley.

“As a Catholic school administrator, I have come to realize that there is nothing more rewarding than to see students grow and flourish in their relationship with Jesus,” Solis added. “I am very excited to start the new school year and work with the teachers, staff, and students as well as in partnership with the parents. To me, it is a true blessing to be at St. Rita.”
