Welcome Visitors

We wish to extend a warm welcome to all who attend Mass

with us each weekend as visitors to St. Richard Parish.

We are happy to have you with us. Please introduce yourself to

our pastor, Fr. Flannagan, at the back of the Church at the

end of Mass.

~ ~~~~ All Are Welcome ~ ~~~~

We would like to extend a warm and caring invitation to you to

join our parish. We look forward to having you become a

member of our faith community. Each individual member of our

Parish is an important part of the Catholic family. The gifts of

faith from the Lord are strengthened and deepened by our

Communion in Jesus Christ. The celebration of the

Eucharist is the heart of our parish life.

Come share your “faith”, your time and your talent in one of

our wonderful ministries.

There are white registration envelopes on the back table

or call our office at 978.774.7575

If you are already a registered parishioner we would like to thank you for all your support!

Holy Day of Obligation

8:00am Mass

Tuesday, January 1st

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

This feast, closely connected to the feast of Christmas and celebrated on the octave of

Christmas, is the most important and oldest of the major feasts of Mary. Mary's Divine Maternity

became a universal feast in 1931. Liturgical reform initiated by Vatican II placed it on January 1 in

1969. Prior to this, the feast celebrated on January 1 was the circumcision of Jesus. Mary is indeed the mother of God and our mother is well. As we begin a new year, it is fitting that we honor and

venerate Mary as an essential part of the Catholic Church and of our own lives

Feast of the Holy Family

A parenting seminar at our parish featured a segment on faith

development in children. Time and again, the speaker stressed

the importance of the family in teaching children about the

meaning and purpose of religious doctrine and practices. If

children do not see it at home, they won’t see it—or believe

it—anywhere else. Religion is taught, but faith is caught.

We cannot overestimate how important a role the family plays

in teaching the basics of faith. Children practice what they see.

How many two year olds try to make the Sign of the Cross as

the family prays before meals? It is comical at times, but a

clear reminder that what a child sees and does in the home

forms the basis of his or her own practice of faith. Values,

morals, and faith all begin at home, so that what the family

teaches, the Church preaches and the child of God reaches.

Make room for faith and time for its practice. In busy

schedules, rushed evenings, and overscheduled weekends, we

need the time and space to be quiet, to listen, to pray and to

worship. Prayer, bible reading, traditional devotions, Mass,

and discussions about spiritual and moral issues will make a

big difference in the way the whole family sees, understands

and practices faith.

Planned Giving

Is it that time in your life when you are beginning to wonder

where you can make the best impact with a gift from your

estate . Have you considered your own parish and its needs to

continue the work of the Lord. You can tailor your gift as you

would like it to be used. It is always best to get legal council.

Please know that we are most grateful for your prayerful

consideration as a beneficiary.

Thank you very much.

God Bless and Keep You.

Thank you to all who contributed to last weekend’s special Christmas collection to

provide for the health and well-being of the 580

active and senior priests in good standing in the

Archdiocese of Boston.

As we continue to celebrate the holidays with our families

and friends please consider a gift that supports our Boston

priests, who dedicate their lives to our Church and to all of us.

Our priests need our support now more than ever. If you were

unable to give last week, contributions may be mailed to the

We need sponsors,

godparents, and team members!

At the Rite of Acceptance (celebrated this year on Nov. 25),

we accepted and welcomed Steven Gibbs and Robert Smith

into our community. These candidates, their sponsors, and

RCIA team members meet for one hour at 9:00am on

Sundays. The commitment time for sponsors is one hour on

Sundays from now until the Easter Vigil. Come Journey with Us. Consider volunteering as a Sponsor, Godparent, or Team member in RCIA. As a Sponsor: In addition to the prayers we offer for our candidates, a sponsor is an active member of the parish who

walks with the candidates on the journey to a new fuller life in

Christ. The sponsor supports and guides the candidate along

the way. The sponsor is the candidate’s personal connection

to the parish. Any practicing Catholic over sixteen years of

age who has made his or her First Communion and has been

confirmed can be a sponsor. Sponsors provide encourage-

ment; listen and answer questions; pray with and for the candidate; introduce the candidate to other members of the community; participate with the candidate in as many sessions as possible. As a Team Member: Every member of the Church is called

to be apostolic, we have been called by Jesus first through

Baptism, then by the Holy Spirit in Confirmation we share the

responsibility of carrying the message of the Gospel to all.

The more parishioners become personally invested in the

process of initiating others into the life of Christ, the more the

community itself will be renewed it its own life in Christ. As a Godparent: Serve as a representative of the

community of faith, helping the catechumen to prepare for

Baptism and afterward aids him or her to persevere in the faith

and Christian life. The church requires that a godparent be

mature enough to take on the responsibility, that he or she be a

member of the Catholic Church, and have already received

Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The godparent has a

lifetime obligation to help the newcomer keep his or her

baptismal vows. Godparents provide encouragement; listen

and answer questions; pray with and for the catechumen; introduce the catechumen to other members of the communi-

ty; participate with the catechumen in as many sessions as

possible.

Think about it, pray about it, and then give RCIA

Co-Director, Vicky Woodley, a call at 978-835-0788. We look forward to hearing from you.

Christmas Letter from the Pastor

Dear St. Richard Parish Family,

A blessed Christmas and New Year to each and every one of

you. It is the season for all of us to count our blessings, not

so much our gifts. It is one of the most important times of the

whole year to take the time to find a quiet space and place

and meditate on the Gift of the Christ Child for all of us. Knowing that God loves us so much that He gave His only

Son to us is a revelation that calls for a beautiful response.

The Infant calls upon our hearts to face the world with Trust

in God, with hope in God’s Promise, and with Joy for the gift

of Life itself. It is most important as well to realize that we are the Lord’s

hands and eyes and ears and heart in our world. We are

evangelizers and the ambassadors of His presence and

goodwill in the world in which we walk. It is up to us to

change our world into the image and likeness of Christ our

Lord. St. Richard Parishioners are bringing hope and love to

those without the basics of life by your gifts of food, clothing,

heat and shelter, and so a sense of safety and security. We

are coming together at liturgy to celebrate our gift of the

Lord in our lives, and declaring to all the world around us

that our God lives and reigns , and changes lives for the bet-

ter in every instance for those who believe. I give thanks for all of you, our parish family, for making the

presence of the Lord visible and real for so many, those with

our parish family and for those beyond our borders. You are

a strong example of faith, hope and love to me and to our

world.

God Bless all of our parish family,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Bruce Flannagan
