FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners, As you can see from the two photos below, last Sunday afternoon we cele-brated the 25th Anniversary of the Korean Martyrs Apostolate, with Bishop Witold Mroziewski presiding. It was a most uplifting liturgy from a participatory and musical perspective. Those who planned and executed it are to be commended for their organizational skills. Kudos also to the decorators and to all involved with the reception and food in Michael Brennan Hall afterwards. The new outdoor Korean Martyr statue (St. An-drew Kim Tae-gon) will be dedicated today at 10:45 am. Blessings on our Korean members as they move forward in faith for the next 25 years! Today we begin the new year of Religious Education (aka Faith Formation, ac-cording to the terminology “in possession”). Any families who have not yet registered their children should do so immediately. Spread the word. We mark Catechetical Sunday here today, and gratefully rededicate our cate-chists (religion teachers), aides and all who assist with this instructional program. Contact the rectory (718-729-8957) if you would like to assist in some way. -Father Jerry Jecewiz

TODAY’S SECOND COLLECTION (at the English and Spanish Masses) is for the support of Catholic Education. Although most parishes in the New York City area no longer have their own parochial school, all of contribute to the common cause of Catholic Education in the existing re-gional Catholic Academies. Today’s second collection is for this purpose. Thank you.

ANNOUNCED MASS BOOK The 2017 Mass Book has just opened in the rectory office. Arrangements to have these Masses celebrated for particular intentions can now be made at the rectory during office hours.

FAMILY MASS CHOIR—AN INVITATION We are ready to start a new year for St. Raphael’s Family Mass Choir and we need your talents. The children and adults working with the choir have done an excellent job over the recent years and have made significant contributions to the liturgical life of St. Raphael’s parish. Children in grades 2 and above who are ready and willing to sing are encouraged to join us. We would also be inter-ested in having any high school students participate. The practices are held one or two Monday’s a month at 7:00PM and the choir will be singing at the monthly Family Masses, Christmas Eve, and other appropriate occasions. Dates and other specific information will follow. The only require-ments are that you attend practice and Mass and behave appropriately. We continue to look for adults who are willing to assist in the singing, who may play a musical instrument or who are will-ing to help with other support functions, such as transportation. If you are interested please fill out this form and return it to the parish rectory, to Sister Christine at the Religious Education Program, Joe Becker or Jan Wnek after Mass. If you have any questions regarding the choir please feel free to call the rectory or call Joe Becker at 718-392-3008 or email Joe at [email protected].

PRAYER TO ST. RAPHAEL, OUR PARISH PATRON

(Feast day is this Thursday, Sept. 29th):

Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, con-

soler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners. I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the suf-

ferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels. Because you are

the “medicine of God” I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body. I especially ask of you the favor (here mention your special intention), and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the

temple of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

From Jan, our Music Minister — RE: St. Raphael Choir Our parish choir, which sings at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass and on Christmas Eve, Easter Vigil and other major feast days, has begun rehearsing for the new season on Thursday evening at 7:30 pm in the church. We welcome back all our old members and encourage those members of our parish family who love to sing and have not yet joined to contact our music minister Jan at 718-930-5061 to arrange a short private hearing. Here are several good reasons for joining our church choir: 1.You will no longer be able to complain, "Church is so impersonal--I don't know anyone in my par-ish." 2.Psalm 100 will come to life for you as you "make a joyful noise unto the Lord". 3.Intellectual stimulation--when you make music, you are using both sides of your brain simultane-ously. 4.Serving the Lord--considering all He does for us, it's just a little giving back to Him. 5.Serving others--the congregation really loves it when the choir leads the singing. 6.Every once in a while, you might catch a glimpse of heaven's choir singing along with you. We look forward to hearing from you!
