FROM THE PASTOR…
Dear Parishioners, Many of you may be aware that Father Luke and I have been living in the biblical “valley of darkness” on the first and second floors of the rectory for the last six or eight months. It began with the lights going off on Fridays at about 6 pm. They might come on again Satur-day morning. Or maybe not. Ditto for Sunday. Power generally remained in the wall outlets, over-head lighting was no more. Field workers from Con Ed came a few times, tightened a few connections, and told us we should be OK. These visits were always followed by recorded Con Ed phone messages stating, YOUR POWER HAS BEEN RESTORED. It never was. We were told we would have to hire an electrician to do painstaking detective work through-out the premises. We were also told we were responsible for knowing where our Con Ed box is out front. Buried in the garden? Sealed under the sidewalk? The outages became more widespread, to the point where we could not boil a pot of water or toast a slice of bread in the rectory kitchen. Insult was added to injury as Con Ed surveys arrived asking HOW DID WE DO? Finally, someone working for Con Ed gave me a tip. Contact Con Ed, they said, at 5:00 am on a weekday, before the onslaught of electrical emergencies appear all over the city and siphon off the smartest field workers to those sites. On Friday, June 3rd, I did precisely that. Within an hour, “Jackie” drove up in a red Emer-gency vehicle, put on her jump suit and asked me about 5 pointed questions. She then diagnosed the problem at the gas station across the street (I repeat: at the gas station across the street); she discovered a bad connection there (causing us to lose a “phase”); she repaired it with dispatch; and all is now OK. Father Luke and I can retire carrying our 24/7 flashlights for the time being and enjoy the sound of boiling water as never before! And God said, “Let there be light”! -Father Jerry Jecewiz
FATHER’S DAY IS NEXT SUNDAY, JUNE 19TH A NOVENA OF PARISH MASSES will be offered for your Father’s Day intentions. NEWS AND VIEWS
If you missed last Sunday’s Korean Choir Concert here, you missed a “gem” of an event. Delightful variety, transporting instrumentals and heartfelt singing left everyone in church happy and energized. What a worthy tribute to their 25th Anniversary celebration! (Youri Kim photo)
Gavin Mirza (above), whom many will recognize from his al-tar-serving here, as well as his presence at Mass with his family (including parents Abigail & John Mirza, and grandparents Delia & Joe Dela Cruz) just got great news. The REACH program at Regis High School is an educa-tional and leadership program designed to prepare 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to succeed in high school by improving their academic and study skills, ex-plore their Catholic faith and spirituality, develop their leader-ship skills, and put them to use in the spirit of service and gener-osity. Out of more than 350 stu-dents, Gavin was chosen to be part of the REACH progam at Regis, which is one of the top 5 private high schools in NYC. He will spend 3 weeks at the Uni-versity of Scranton and another 3 weeks at Regis High School this summer to further develop skills and talents and feed his passion for learning. The recog-nition of Gavin’s dedication and hard work has given him an op-portunity of a lifetime that will be life changing. Pray for him as he begins a journey of new experi-ences and challenges.
