1st Quarter DMV Area Chapter Newsletter (Jan-Mar 2019)

First, thank you for the opportunity to serve as the Marching 100 (M100) Alumni Band Association (ABA) DMV Area Chapter President for the 2019-2020 term. Our chapter continues to support our mission to ‘make sure the association actively assists, enthusiastically supports, and aggressively promotes the Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) Band Program and the university through all reasonable and appropriate means.’ Event(s)

In January, our chapter got its feet wet and held the first Executive Council (EC) meeting with the ‘new’ leadership team, as well as connected with the National M100 ABA Board. The EC/chapter staff began planning for the 2019 Calendar Year by identifying ‘Milestones’ and ‘Key Events’ for our chapter. Also, we established our DMV Area Chapter E-mail Account at M100ABA.DMVAREA@gmail.com in order to facilitate easy communications between the chapter staff and Alumni & Associate Band Members.

In February; the DMV Area Chapter, of the M100 ABA, sponsored the costs for Mr. Daryl Baker, Assistant Director of Marching & Pep Bands, FAMU, to conduct on-site auditions at the Alfred Street Baptist Church (ASBC) Historically Black College & University (HBCU) College Festival.

While the band interviews & auditions were taking place, with at least twenty (20) HBCU Band Directors, members of the M100 ABA DMV Area Chapter set up a FAMU Band Display Table in the band recruitment area, and actively engaged with ‘potential’ new band members of our beloved M100.

The M100 ABA would like to assist as many students possible to attend this year’s band camp. If you want to donate, to this worthy cause, please contribute to the band camp scholarship drive via the M100 ABA Webpage at www.marching100alumni.com or you can also mail your donations to the following address at Marching 100 Alumni Band Association, Inc., P.O. Box 7133, Tallahassee, FL 32314-7133.

Also, the M100 ABA is now accepting applications for the 2019 FAMU M100 Summer Band Camp Scholarships. If you know of any students (8th -12th grade), who are interested in applying for a band camp scholarship, please have them to fill out an application. The deadline for all band camp scholarship applications is Tuesday, 30 Apr 19.

In March, our chapter kicked off the M100 ABA Membership Drive that started on 01 March 19 and ends on 30 June 19. Membership has its privilege and participation in the ‘Early Bird Special’ for $75.00 provides the following:

★ Financial Assistance to the FAMU Music Department

★ Free Homecoming Registration/Package; ○ A Homecoming Game Ticket

○ A Tailgate Ticket w/food & drinks

○ A M100 ABA Homecoming T-shirt.

In an effort to get an accurate account of all of our chapter members, we encourage every member to send a check or money order to the DMV Area Chapter at 7005 Fieldstone Court, Brandywine Md 20613. If you wish to pay by credit/debit card, please make your payment directly to our DMV Area Chapter PayPal Account at the following link: paypal.me/DMVAreaM100ABA or use the DMV Area Chapter Cash App Username: $DMVAreaM100ABA. Our chapter treasurer will work closely with Nationals to ensure that your membership is associated with the DMV Area Chapter. If you pay on the M100 ABA National Website, please ensure that you ‘associate’ your membership with the DMV Chapter!!!

The chapter staff also participated in the M100 ABA Winter Meeting Conference with Dr. Shelby Chipman, Director of Bands, FAMU, on 16 March 19, and received the ‘State of the Union’ for the FAMU Band and ‘recap’ of last marching season. Furthermore, the staff distributed our DMV Area Chapter By-laws to be reviewed by all our our chapter members for any ‘proposed’ changes. In compliance to our current chapter by-laws, chapter members ‘MUST’ receive the by-laws no later than (NLT) sixty (60) days prior to the annual meeting, 01 June 19, and have the opportunity to provide recommended/proposed changes.

In order to receive & consolidate all recommended changes to our By-laws before the DMV Area Chapter Annual Meeting, please submit all input to the chapter NLT 20 May 19. Discussion(s) concerning our DMV Area Chapter By-laws and support to the FAMU Music Department will be a main agenda item at our annual chapter meeting. Our chapter staff has worked very closely with alsgraphicdesigns4U, in order to design a chapter t-shirt for our DMV Area Alumni & Associate Band Members to purchase wear in their respective communities. We have officially kicked off our DMV Area Chapter ‘T-shirt Campaign’ with this 1st Quarter DMV Area Chapter Newsletter!!! All DMV Area Chapter Alumni & Associate Band Members can ‘now’ purchase chapter t-shirts. A payment of $20.00, per t-shirt, can be made via our DMV Area Chapter Paypal Account, paypal.me/DMVAreaM100ABA, as well as our, DMV Area Chapter Cash App Username, $DMVAreaM100ABA. Please specify the number of t-shirts purchased and size(s) i.e. S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, or 5XL; order deadline is 20 April 19. If feasible, send updated point of contact information to our DMV Area Chapter Secretary at M100ABA.DMVAREA@gmail.com. Our secretary will ensure that your updated information is added to our ‘master’ DMV Area Chapter Roster. We encourage ‘ALL’ of our Alumni & Associate Band Members to attend our upcoming DMV Area Chapter Annual Meeting, 01 June 19, on the campus of the University of Maryland. All purchased chapter t-shirts will be available for pick-up at our meeting. If an Alumni or Associate member cannot attend our annual meeting, the staff will deliver t-shirts in the ‘immediate’ Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia area. If a member is not in the ‘immediate’ area, please include an additional $5.00 for priority mail postage.

Presently, the chapter staff is in negotiations, with Vectored Artwork, Inc., to purchase a DMV Area Chapter Banner for use at DMV Area Chapter sponsored/hosted events. To keep it simple, the staff decided to design our chapter banner on the ‘likes’ of the back of our chapter shirt; in short, our chapter banner will look ‘exactly’ like the back of our DMV Area Chapter T-shirt pictured above…. lol!!!
