Fourth Sunday of Advent

First Reading Is 7:10-14

The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying: Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God; let it be deep as the netherworld, or high as the sky! But Ahaz answered, "I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!" Then Isaiah said: Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary people, must you also weary my God? Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.

Second Reading ROM 1:1-7

Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised previously through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, the gospel about his Son, descended from David according to the flesh, but established as Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness through resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him we have received the grace of apostleship, to bring about the obedience of faith, for the sake of his name, among all the Gentiles, among whom are you also, who are called to belong to Jesus Christ; to all the beloved of God in Rome, called to be holy. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel MT 1:18-24

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means "God is with us." When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.

Segunda lectura Rom 1, 1-7

Yo, Pablo, siervo de Cristo Jesús, he sido llamado por Dios para ser apóstol y elegido por él para proclamar su Evangelio. Ese Evangelio, que, anunciado de antemano por los profetas en las Sagradas Escrituras, se refiere a su Hijo, Jesucristo, nuestro Señor, que nació, en cuanto a su condición de hombre, del linaje de David, y en cuanto a su condición de espíritu santificador, se manifestó con todo su poder como Hijo de Dios, a partir de su resurrección de entre los muertos. Por medio de Jesucristo, Dios me concedió la gracia del apostolado, a fin de llevar a los pueblos paganos a la aceptación de la fe, para gloria de su nombre. Entre ellos, también se cuentan ustedes, llamados a pertenecer a Cristo Jesús. A todos ustedes, los que viven en Roma, a quienes Dios ama y ha llamado a formar parte de su pueblo santo, les deseo la gracia y la paz de Dios, nuestro Padre, y de Jesucristo, el Señor.

Evangelio Mt 1, 18-24

Cristo vino al mundo de la siguiente manera: Estando María, su madre, desposada con José, y antes de que vivieran juntos, sucedió que ella, por obra del Espíritu Santo, estaba esperando un hijo. José, su esposo, que era hombre justo, no queriendo ponerla en evidencia, pensó dejarla en secreto. Mientras pensaba en estas cosas, un ángel del Señor le dijo en sueños: "José, hijo de David, no dudes en recibir en tu casa a María, tu esposa, porque ella ha concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo. Dará a luz un hijo y tú le pondrás el nombre de Jesús, porque él salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados". Todo esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que había dicho el Señor por boca del profeta Isaías: He aquí que la virgen concebirá y dará a luz un hijo, a quien pondrán el nombre de Emmanuel, que quiere decir Dios-con-nosotros. Cuando José despertó de aquel sueño, hizo lo que le había mandado el ángel del Señor y recibió a su esposa.

4. The saints now in God’s presence preserve their bonds of love and communion with us. The Book of Revelation attests to this when it speaks of the intercession of the martyrs: “I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne; they cried out with a loud voice, ‘O sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long will it be before you judge?’” (6:9-10). Each of us can say: “Surrounded, led and guided by the friends of God… I do not have to carry alone what, in truth, I could never carry alone. THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

Many of us know the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” but do you know the meaning behind the song? The song is an English Christmas carol. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permit-ted to practice their faith openly. During that time, someone wrote this carol as a teaching song for young Catholics. The song has its obvious meaning but there was also a hidden meaning known only to members of the Church.

The Partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ. Two turtle doves are the Old and New Testaments. Three french hens stand for faith, hope and love. Four calling birds are the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Five golden rings recall the Torah or Law-the first five books of the Old Testament. Six geese a-laying stand for the six days of creation Seven swans a-swimming represent the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit – Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy. Eight maids a-milking are the eight beatitudes. Nine ladies dancing are nine of the fruits of the Holy Spirit-Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, kindness, Good-ness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control. Ten lords a-leaping are the ten commandments. Eleven pipers piping represent the eleven faithful disciples Twelve drummers drumming symbolizes the twelve points of belief in the Apostles’ Creed. LOS DOCE DÍAS DE NAVIDAD Muchos de nosotros conocemos la canción "Los doce días de Navidad", pero ¿sabes el significado detrás de la canción? La canción es un villancico inglés. Desde 1558 hasta 1829, a los católicos romanos en Inglaterra no se les permitió practicar su fe abiertamente. Durante ese tiempo, alguien escribió este villancico como una canción de enseñanza para jóvenes católicos. La canción tiene su significado obvio, pero también había un sig-nificado oculto conocido solo por los miembros de la Iglesia. La perdiz en un peral es Jesucristo. Dos tórtolas son el Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento. Tres gallinas francesas representan la fe, la esperanza y el amor. Once gaiteros de tuberías representan los once discípulos fieles Doce tambores tambores simbolizan los doce puntos de creencia en el Credo de los Apóstoles.
