“¿Qué hay en un nombre?” El Evangelio nos cuenta cómo Juan el Bau sta recibió su nombre. Para nuestros antepasados del An guo Testamento un nombre no solo iden ficaba la persona, es que también indicaba su misión en la vida. En el rito del bau smo preguntamos a los padres “¿Qué nombre dan a su hijo/a?” …y con su bau smo recibe (como nosotros hemos

recibido) un nuevo nombre, renacidos recibimos el nombre “Cris ano”. Dios nos ha dado un nombre y una misión. ¿Estamos cumpliendo con nuestro nombre? Juan, sí, cumplió. Su nombre “Juan” significa “Dios ha mostrado su favor” y él dio tes monio del favor más grande: la venido de Jesús. Nuestros padres “escogieron” nuestro nombre. Dios escogió a Isaías, David, Juan Bau sta (lecturas de hoy), y …Dios nos escogió. ¿No estás seguro de esto? Pues, miramos el Salmo responsorial: “Te doy gracias porque me has escogido portentosamente.” Así es, hecho y amado por Dios …está en nuestro nombre y es nuestra misión = dar tes monio del amor de Dios en el mundo.

“What’s in a name?”

Our Gospel recounts the ‘naming’ of John the Bap st as we celebrate his na vity. For our Old Testament ancestors a name not only iden fied a person, it also o en indicated what their mission in life would be. In our bap smal ritual, parents are asked : “What name do you give your child?” …and with their bap sm they (as we did) receive a new name, we are reborn and receive the name: “Chris an”. We have been given a name by God and a mission that grows out of it. Are we living up to our name? John the Bap st did. His name “John” means “God has shown favor” and he witnessed to the greatest of God’s favors: the coming of Jesus. Our parents “chose” our name. God chose Isaiah, David, John the Bap st ( our readings for this feast ), and..…God has chosen us. Not sure about that? Well, let’s go back to our Psalm response: “I praise you, for I am wonderfully made.” That’s right, made and loved by God ..it’s in our name and it’s our mission = to witness God’s love to all the world.

Development Corner St. Philip Parish recently received a very generous bequest from the estate of Richard and Gladys Foley (who passed away in 2011 and 2004, respectively) upon the death of their daughter Jayne Foley in 2017. We are very grateful to the Foleys for their foresight and generosity. A bequest like this is a wonderful way to continue a family’s legacy and we hope you and your family may consider remembering St. Philip Parish in your planned giving and will.

Nuestra parroquia ha recibido una generosa donación del testamento de Richard y Gladys Foley (fallecidos en 2011 y 2004) al fallecer su hija Jane Foley el año pasado. Estamos sumamente agradecidos a la familia Foley por pensar en nosotros y su generosidad. Discípulos de Cristo: Programa de Formación

para Ministerio

¿Te gustaría conocer más acerca de tu fe? ¿Te gustaría aprender más acerca de las sagradas escrituras, la iglesia, la moral y otros temas importantes, y poder prepararte para el ministerio en la Iglesia, y todo en el idioma Español? Si la respuesta es “Si,” la Diócesis de Green Bay tiene un programa para ti! Discípulos de Cristo es un programa de tres años de formación que incluye clases, retiros, sesiones personales, talleres y seminarios. Las sesiones son llevadas a cabo en el Centro Pastoral de la Diócesis de Green Bay. El costo del programa es $125 (individual) y $175 (pareja casada). Ayuda con el costo está disponible. Fr. Richard Notter will be at all Masses on July 14 & 15, as part of the

Missionary Cooperation Appeal Collection for the Circus and Traveling Show Ministry.

He will speak of his work among the itinerant

communities of the circus. The Catholic Church in the

USA has a history of reaching out to these communities since the 1920’s. These

often neglected traveling communities have the same

spiritual needs to be educated in their faith, receive the Sacraments, and be spiritually fed.

Fr. Notter will be here to speak about his experiences of traveling with the circus

people, his ministry to these people, and one of the ministry’s special projects.
