Throughout Easter Time, the Church rejoices with Jesus, risen from the dead. Our readings on this Fourth Sunday of Easter celebrate our instinct to come together in joy, worshiping in church. While private prayer nourishes our individual relationship with the Lord, community prayer is a foretaste of paradise. The book of Revelation depicts a “great multitude” worshiping God “day and night in his temple.” Our churches on Easter Sunday often reflect this happy multitude, filling the pews to
bursting. Four Sundays into the festive season, we are encouraged to keep praising God together. In the Acts of the Apostles, Paul and Barnabas demonstrate their instinct to worship with their faith community each Sabbath, dutifully taking their seats in the synagogue. In the Gospel, Jesus calls us his sheep and reminds us why coming together as a flock is so important: uniting in community, we imitate the unity of God. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

It just takes a little faith! When the children in the
elementary Religious Education Program
planted their tulip bulbs (blessed by Deacon Phil
Heitz) in October in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, they didn’t understand
why there were no flowers right away! They were told the bulbs had
to sleep through the winter so they could bloom strongly in the
spring...and bloom they did, even in our April snow!
MOTHERS’ DAY MASS INTENTIONS FOR 2019/2020 The following women will be included in monthly Mass intentions for the next year. Our apologies for any name
misspellings or omissions. Please call Barb Nicolai at 630-543-1754 or email [email protected] to report any errors. Thank you for supporting the St. Philip the Apostle Religious Education Program with your generous donations!

Your children will be the envy of their friends when they talk about their summer safari vacation! At Roar! Vacation Bible School, kids discover God is good even when life gets wild! The intrepid explorers will participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, sing and dance to catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, devour
yummy treats, experience one-of-a-kind Wild Bible Adventures, and create craft projects they’ll take home and play with all summer long. Each day concludes with the Safari Celebration that gets everyone involved in living what they’ve learned that day. Roar! Vacation Bible School will take place here at St. Philip’s from June 10 to 14 from 9:00 a.m. to noon each day. The cost is $50/child for children in PreK4 (four years old by June 1, 2019) through Grade 3. The registration deadline is May 15, and space is limited so don’t delay. Registration forms are available on the parish website st-phil.org, in the narthex literature rack, and in the RE Office.

In the Gospel today we are given a condensed model of the spiritual life. It involves listening and knowing and following. The sheep of the Good Shepherd listen to his voice. Unlike the voice of strangers, the sheep listen and respond to the voice of their shepherd. They are attuned to his tone and the rhythm of his speech. They find a home within his words. We who belong to the flock of the Lord might ask, how well do we know this voice? How much time do we spend listening to it with love each day? How might we build a home with the Word of God? Only after we have listened to the
voice of the Good Shepherd and heard him call us by name can we then follow him. Theologian Sofia Cavalletti wrote, “It is only in love, and not in fear, that one may have a moral life worthy of the name.” (The Religious Potential of the Child) God does not crave our fearful submission but our loving and joyful collaboration in building the kingdom of God. May we listen, know, and follow. Source: Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press

Do you have questions about the Catholic faith? Send them to Carol Schubert for answers… Can a Catholic Christian marry a person
from another religion? For Catholic believers, to enter into and live in marriage with a person who belongs to another religion can cause difficulties for their own faith and for their future children. Given her responsibility for the faithful, the Church has therefore established the impediment of disparity of religion. Such a marriage can therefore be contracted validly only if a dispensation from this impediment is obtained before the wedding. The marriage is not sacramental. [1633-1637]
Liturgical Ministry is a way to serve God and your community. If you are interested in becoming an altar server, please contact Carol Schubert to register for a training session on Tuesday,

Take the time to say thanks. "It takes so little to let others know they are appreciated, but such acknowledgment is greatly valued. A thank you, a phone call, or a card can brighten someone’s entire day. Make a point of recognizing the good that others do and telling them about it. Showing appreciation is a great habit to develop." (Anonymous ) Sometimes we take for granted what is done for us. This could be because we don’t have to ask for it or it has always been done without fanfare. The
dinner gets to the table every night; the laundry is done; schedules are made; the house is clean; and there is love and harmony in the family. All these things happen as long as Mom is around; when Mom is no longer in the equation some, if not all, of this ceases to happen. On Mother’s Day we celebrate the women in our lives who have given us birth, provided for our physical and emotional needs, and who are our companions in life--but let’s try to stretch Mother’s Day beyond the 24 hours that are designated every year and honor these wonderful ladies the whole year round. It can be just saying “thank you” to her for doing what she have always been doing. Without the unselfish love of our mothers, none of us would be who we are today. Thank you--and Happy Mothers’ Day!
