FROM ROCKLAND RIGHT TO LIFE

Very soon we’ll be posting all the information you’ll need about our annual trip to the 2016 March for Life against abortion, which will take place on Friday, Jan. 22, this year. We’ve already reserved three charter buses. But right now we want to give you a heads up that there will be a new policy in place: EVERYONE MUST RESERVE A SEAT AND PAY BEFORE THE TRIP. WE MUST RECEIVE YOUR CHECK BY JAN. 13. The seats are $30 for adult; $15 for child. Clergy ride free, but you still must make a reservation so we know you’re coming. SACRAMENTAL LIFE IN ST. PETER’S CHURCH 2015 During 2015 we celebrated the following sacraments in our parish 219 Baptisms: 9 adults; 16 ages 7 - 18; 194 under 6 years 144 First Communions: 30 adult; 114 under 18 years 114Confirmations: 25 adult; 89 under 18 years 22 Marriages 59 Deaths 250 Anointings of the Sick. Over the weekend of October 17– 18 our ushers counted the number of those attending each of our Masses. Our attendance for that weekend was 1878 which is up slightly from the year before. (Each year on the third or the fourth Sunday of October all the parishes of the Archdiocese of New York record the number of those at Mass. This information is part of a report on sacramental participation that is sent to the Archdiocese by the parishes each year. This is a good weekend to count Mass attendance because the summer vacation period has ended and families have returned to their regular lives of work and school.) About the same number were baptized in 2015 as in the previous year. Nine adults were baptized which is a high number for a parish. All but one were baptized at the Easter Vigil in April. Our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) Program prepared these adults to receive their baptism, first communion and confirmation. The adults who received their First Communion and their Confirmation took part in the RCIA program. We had fewer marriages and fewer deaths in 2015 as compared with 2014. The number of anointing remained about the same. Through last year 886 Masses were offered in our church. This does not include weddings, funerals or other celebrations. Two parishes were established in the nineteenth century in order that Catholic faithful could receive the sacraments. In these first years of the 21st century those parishes have become one parish so that Catholic faithful can receive the sacraments.

Over the weekend of October 17 – 18 our ushers counted the number of those attending each of our Masses. Our attendance for that weekend was 1867 which is up slightly from the year before. (Each year on the third or the fourth Sunday of October all the parishes of the Archdiocese of New York record the number of those at Mass. This information is part of a report on sacramental participation that is sent to the Archdiocese by the parishes each year. This is a good weekend to count Mass attendance because the summer vacation period has ended and families have returned to their regular lives of work and school.)

POPE FRANCIS: BAPTISM AND THE HOLY SPIRIT In Baptism we are consecrated by the Holy Spirit. This is what the word “Christian” means, it means consecrated like Jesus, in the same Spirit in which Jesus was immersed throughout his earthly existence. He is the “Christ”, the Anointed One, the Consecrated One; we, the baptized, are “Christian”, meaning consecrated, anointed. Therefore, dear parents, dear godfathers and godmothers, if you want your children to become true Christians, help them to grow up “immersed” in the Holy Spirit, that is to say, in the warmth of the love of God, in the light of his Word. For this reason, do not forget to invoke the Holy Spirit often, every day. “Do you pray, Ma’am?” — “Yes” — “Whom do you pray to?”. — “I pray to God”. But “God” does not exist like this: God is one person, and as a Person the Father, Son and Holy Spirit exist. “Whom do you pray to?”. — “The Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit”. We usually pray to Jesus. When we pray the “Our Father”, we pray to the Father. But we do not often pray to the Holy Spirit. It is very important to pray to the Holy Spirit, because He teaches us how to bring up the family, the children, so that these children may grow up in the atmosphere of the Holy Trinity. It is precisely the Spirit who leads them forward. For this reason, do not forget to invoke the Holy Spirit often, every day. You can do so, for example, with this simple prayer: “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love”. You can say this prayer for your children, as well as, naturally, for yourselves! When you recite this prayer, you feel the maternal presence of the Virgin Mary. She teaches us to pray to the Holy Spirit, and to live in accordance with the Spirit, like Jesus. May Our Lady, our Mother, always accompany the journey of your children and of your families. So be it.

ENCYCLICAL ON THE ENVIRONMENT Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home, the much anticipated encyclical of Pope Francis on the environment, was releaed to the world on Thursday, June 18th, 2015. People all over the world eagerly awaited the pope’s call to save God’s creation and protect the poor (who are those most harmed by ecological destruction). News coverage was extensive and it generated much interest among people fo many faiths around the world. you can find an introduction to the encyclical in a 6 ½ minute video that features Catholic voices, online at: http://www.yaleclimateconnections.org/2015/06/video-outlines-backgroudn-for-pope-francis-papal-encyclical/, or go to Yale Climate Connections and search “encyclical background”.

For the last 35 years St Peters Parish has puto n an Annual Passion Play. A Passion Play is a re-enactment of the last few days of Jesus on earth. Most of our practices are on Saturdays from 9-1. If you like to sign, or play a musical instrument or act that’s wonderful, but it’s not required. In addition to our many non speaking parts we also need help with stage props, lighting, music, sound, costumes and kitchen. If you want to learn more about what is needed and how you can help please come to the School Gym on Saturday January 9th and Saturday January 16th at 8:30am. For more information call Paul or Bernadette at 845-249-0920.

«¿Tú a quién rezas?» —«Al Padre, al Hijo, al Espíritu Santo». Normalmente rezamos a Jesús.

. 483 St. Peter’s Church
