FROM THE PASTOR
Praised be Jesus Christ!
I love how Christmas and Easter, two of the biggest holydays on the Church’s calendar, both connect in important ways with the Mass —revealing something of the greatness of Catholic worship.
Since the Mass is the unbloody re-presentation of Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary, by which the Risen Body of the Lord is offered on our altars in a sacramental mode, it is easy to see the connections with Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
The very same priest and victim who offered himself on the Cross on Good Friday, is offered also on our altars at every Mass, just in a different mode.
The very same Risen Jesus who told St. Thomas to see and touch his wounds when he appeared to the apostles after the Resurrection, is also given to us really, physically, and substantially in Holy Communion.
The more we ponder the feast of Easter, and the Pascal Triduum that precedes it, the better we understand the greatness of Holy Mass.
But how does Christmas connect here?
One of the most touching aspects of the Christmas feast, and that which so moves the heart and sentiments during this season, is the fact that our God himself become one of us, and did so in the most humble of ways.
He entered among us first hidden within the virginal womb of the Blessed Mother.
He was first visible in the most vulnerable of manners— as a newborn infant.
He was born in a small and relatively unknown village of Bethlehem.
And he was not even offered the simple comforts of a room at the local inn.
In every way his Incarnation and birth are remarkable by the very fact that at the level of outward appearances, they are unremarkable in every way!
And yet hidden within that “unremarkableness” is the fullness of that Divine Power by which the entire universe was created, and through which we “live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28).
I think it is precisely through pondering the humility of the newborn Christ in the Christmas feast that Our Lord prepared the world to recognize him under even more humble appearances—the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar—in which the same fullness of God Incarnate is present under the mere appearances of bread and wine.
Let the same love and tenderness which you feel when you think of the infant Jesus be the same sentiments that you stir up in your heart when you approach the Lord in Holy Communion.
Let the same caution and care by which you would handle a newborn child be reflected in the reverence and care with which you treat Our Eucharistic Lord.
Let the preparations and planning which precede the birth of a new baby, be a reminder of the preparation of the soul and purity of conscience (through the Sacrament of Confession) which should precede any reception of Holy Communion.
And let the silence of the sleeping infant in the manger be the same reverential silence you experience and cultivate any time you enter into the Church in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.
In doing so, we can experience at every Mass the same affections of soul which inspired the words of the great Christmas chant, O Magnum Mysterium:
O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the newborn Lord, lying in a manger!
Blessed is the virgin whose womb was worthy to bear
the Lord, Jesus Christ. Alleluia!
In the hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Father Peter Van Lieshout
