Active Participation in the Mass (continued)
In last week’s bulletin, I wrote “Active Participation” requires that our mind and heart are alert and engaged during the Mass, the Eucharistic celebration. Hence, active participation in the Mass involves our conscious presence, praying, singing and acting in union with the whole assembly. Conscious presence also means listening with attention and reverence to the proclamation of the Sacred Scripture. Pope Benedict XVI, in his 2007 apostolic exhortation on the Eucharist, stated that a fruitful participation in the Mass is that we are personally conformed to the mystery being celebrated. This means that one has to be internally disposed and externally active. When we want to take active participation, our every word, spoken or sung, every posture and gesture, every sign and symbol should help us to draw deeply into the Sacred Liturgy, wherein Christ is truly present. I believe that every one of us come to the Sunday Mass, in order to take active participation. If so, in order to fulfill our good intention, what is required is our prompt, loud and clear responses to the priest’s prayer by every member of the congregation. This would give every one a satisfaction of having participated in the Mass, rather than having been just an observer or an onlooker.
God bless you Fr. Arul Joseph V.
