DAY OF PRAYER TO END VIOLENCE
September 11 falls on a Sunday this year. The bishops of
the United States have asked that it be observed as a day of
prayer for an end to violence. There are many sources of
tension and division in our society, so they are asking us to
call upon our Lord who came to reconcile us to God and to
one another. In our archdiocese the prayer observance has
been extended to include Friday and Saturday. We will
observe this call to prayer by having prayer and adoration
from 6:00 - 9:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 11 at both St.
Peter and St. Joseph church. There will be 10-20 minutes
of communal prayer and reflection at the beginning of each
hour and 40-45 minutes for silent prayer. Come for a half
hour or three hours or whatever time you and your kids can
manage.
ST. PETER IN CHAINS
St. Vincent de Paul
In today’s gospel, Jesus lays out the
demands of following him, the great cost
of discipleship. The Mission Statement
of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul states; “Vincentians witness
God’s love by embracing all works of charity and justice...the Soci-
ety makes no distinction in those served because, in them, Vin-
centians see the face of Christ.”
Have you considered answering the call to help serve the
poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?
It probably cannot be stated too often that the planning for
the Region assumes that all three parishes will remain open
with the various staff members operating collaboratively,
assisting each other as needed. Each parish will remain
financially separate but there might very well be shared
costs such as the pastor’s salary, benefits, and living ar-
rangements.
At the same time it cannot be stated too often that we have
a “blueprint” for what the “ideal” parish (or Region) should
look like. It is described in the document “Vibrant Parish”
which has been distributed a couple times in the three par-
ishes. The assumption here is that a parish does not exist
just for itself. The document gives bullet points under
these headings:
• Worship and Spirituality
• Catechesis and Education
• Pastoral Ministry
• Evangelization and Outreach
• Mission Centered Leadership and Administration
• Mission Centered Fiscal Solvency

Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song,
and His praise in the congregation of the godly ones.
(Psalm 149:1)
The Choir will begin singing for Sunday Masses on
September 11
th
at 11:00am. Choir Rehearsal will resume
on Thursday, September 8
th
at 7pm in the choir loft. Not
only do we look forward to present members returning, but
we are also open to new members joining! Both adults and
youth, Grade 6 or above, are welcomed to join. Youth are
not required to attend the Thursday evening rehearsal, but
should arrive at 10:15 on Sunday mornings for rehearsal.
We will also form a Children’s Choir, Grade 2 and
up, for Christmas again this year. Watch the bulletin and
The Link school newsletter for details later in the year.
The Handbell Choir played for Easter last year and
will be adding Christmas this year. Adults and children,
Grades 5 & up (and parents!), are invited to join. The art of
handbell ringing is recognized today as both an excellent
tool for Music Education and a viable ensemble instrument
in both the school and church. Rehearsals will begin soon
and will usually be on Thursday evenings 6-7pm. Watch
the bulletin and The Link school newsletter for details
soon.
Music ministry is open to anyone who can match
pitch (“carry a tune”) or play an instrument. For those who
would like to sing or play handbells, prior experience or the
ability to read music is not necessary, and you do not have
to be a professionally trained singer—we provide on-the-
job training!
Please contact our Music Director, Michael Collins
by email at [email protected] or in the parish
office at 863-3938, ext. 355 if interested in becoming a part
of the music ministry.

SPS Walk 2016
The 8th annual Walk-a-Thon for St. Peter in Chains School is scheduled for Friday, October 7, 2016. The Walk-a-Thon
Committee is currently seeking corporate sponsors for the event to help support its efforts. The corporate sponsors will
enjoy multiple opportunities to promote their businesses through event donor displays, The Journal Newspaper and more.
We hope to have commitment from our corporate sponsors by September 9
th
. With donations received last year, a wire-
less campus was created and sets of Chromebooks were purchased for our school. This year, donations will continue to
support technology advancement and campus improvement projects. Please contact Kathleen Pendergest at 702-6678 for
more details on how your company can promote its business as well as support an important cause, which in turn benefits
every student at St. Peter in Chains School. Thank you!
