ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH 95 MARKET STREET MOUNT CLEMENS, MICHIGAN 48043 April 1, 2018 Phone: (586)468-4578 Website: stpetermtclemens.weconnect.com My Dear Friends, Happy Easter! Easter is the most important feast of the Church. If Christ had not been raised from the dead by the power of the Father, then His Death would have little to no meaning. St. Paul states this clearly in one of his letters. It is truly a time of great happiness and peace for those who actually believe. A covenant was made with Abraham that God would send a Messiah to lead His People to freedom. Over the centuries and because people are human, this redeeming act of the Promised Messiah became associated with freedom from the political power of Rome. Jesus came as the Promised Messiah but people were looking for someone else to do something else. What did Jesus actually come to do? On one level, He came to be the perfect Mediator between God and humankind. This is because He is truly God and truly man. On another level, He came to forgive the sins of all of His brothers and sisters. This was accomplished by his Death on GoodFriday. The great German theologian, Karl Rahner, once wrote a paper called the “Anonymous Christian.” In this work he described that the power of Redemption earned by Jesus on the Cross not only extended itself forward throughout history on all who would come after Jesus. It also emanated back through time to all who had ever lived prior to GoodFriday. Such was the great power of Christ’s Redemptive Act on the Cross. This is why we say in our Creed that Jesus raised all of those who had fallen asleep (died) awaiting the coming of the Messiah. Thus we believe that Adam, Eve, Moses, all of the prophets, Job and all of those who awaited the redemption of humankind were raised from the dead by the power of the Resurrection. This can be clearly seen in the writings of all of the Old Testament Prophets as well as the New Testament. Many people of different faiths have a hard time with this explanation. The biggest reason is that they do not believe in Jesus to begin with. Regardless, it is the belief of the Church that Jesus died for all of His brothers and sisters, including us, or He died for no one. Such is the unimaginable power of God’s Love for His sons and daughters. This leads us to the large question of the Redemption of all earned by Christ in the Name of the Father and offered to us through the Holy Spirit. There is no way anyone could earn their salvation. This is why the great Sacrifice of Christ was necessary. It came about because God loved and loves all of His Children and wants them to be happy with Him forever in the Kingdom. My Dear Friends, !Happy Easter!! Easter is the most important feast of the Church.! If Christ had not been raised from the dead by the power of the Father, then His Death would have little to no meaning.! St. Paul states this clearly in one of his letters.! It is truly a time of great happiness and peace for those who actually believe.! A covenant was made with Abraham that God would send a Messiah to lead His People to freedom. Over the centuries and because people are human, this !redeeming act of the Promised Messiah became associated with freedom from the political power of Rome.! Jesus came as the Promised Messiah but people were looking for !someone else to do something else.! What did Jesus !actually come to do?!!!On one level, He came to be the perfect Mediator between God and humankind.! This is because He is truly God and truly man.! On another level, He came to forgive the sins of all of His brothers and sisters.! This was accomplished by his Death on Good!Friday.! The great German theologian, Karl Rahner, once wrote a paper called the “Anonymous Christian.”! In this work he described that the power of !Redemption earned by Jesus on the Cross not only !extended itself forward throughout history on all who would come after Jesus.! It also emanated back through time to all who had ever lived prior to Good!Friday.! Such was the great power of Christ’s Redemptive Act on the Cross.! This can be clearly seen in the writings of all of the Old Testament Prophets as well as the New !Testament.! Many people of different faiths have a hard time with this explanation.! Remember the “Baltimore Catechism.” Question #2 read: “Why did God make us?! God made us to know Him, love Him and serve Him in this world so that we would be happy with Him in Heaven.” Salvation is a gift freely given by God to His Children.! IT was earned by Jesus on Good!Friday!so that we might see and experience God’s great Love for us even though we are all sinners. This gift of Salvation cannot be earned, bought or stolen.!!!

This leaves us with a question.! Is it possible for someone to reject a gift?! Of course this is possible because God has given us the gift of free will.! We can reject the gift of !salvation that God offers us and that was earned for us by Christ.! This is done not by any one single act but by the direction of one’s life.! The doctrine of the Catholic Church is that we believe in Heaven, Hell and Purgatory.! It is God’s Will that His Children be with Him and all of their loved ones in the Kingdom.! This leads us to another question.! What can a finite human! who is a sinner do to deserve eternal punishment?! To say that anyone goes to Hell is to claim to know the mind of God and deny the possibility that in His great Love He sends people to eternal punishment.! To say that everyone goes to Heaven automatically is the same sin because it denies to God His Right to judge.! Both extremes limit God usually to the mindset of finite human beings. Somewhere in Scripture God did say: “My Ways are not your ways.! As high as the sky is above the earth so are My Ways different than your ways.”!!!

I am saying all of this to help us focus on and try to !understand what this great feast of Easter means to all of God’s Children including you and I.! Try as we might, we will never fathom the depth of God’s Love for us until we see Him face to face.! It is the story of the St. John and the Book of Revelation.! We believe that God is Love and who abides in love abides in God.! One day we all will come to !understand the depth of God’s Love for us.! We will then understand the Mystery and magnificence of the !Resurrection of Christ and the boundlessness of this great Gift freely given to us by God as Loving father and Jesus as redeeming Brother.! Until then it is good to take the time, accept the Gift and say “Thank You” to God for all He has done for us.!!!

This is what I and the entire Pastoral Staff wish for you and yours this Easter.! It is not knowledge of Easter because that is not fully possible.! It is not a momentary good wish for God’s Blessings.! It is the totality of the meaning of Easter for you and yours in the Will of God happiness and peace with Him and your loved ones forever.! HAPPY EASTER!!! ! !! ! ! Love, Peace, Joy,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! ! ! Fr. Mike!

God has a plan for you. He created you in His image and likeness. In your life as a son or daughter of God, you are called to manifest your Father’s glory. The Plan of Life process teaches you to recognize who you are in relationship to God. The Saints all discovered this wisdom in being who they were called to be. Our Lady saw herself as “the handmaid of the Lord.” St. John the Evangelist was “the beloved of the Lord.” !Moses was “the friend of God.” We are called to imitate the lives of the Saints, but we are not called to be them. You are uniquely created and have your own plan of holiness.!

WOMEN’S BOOK CLUB

We rated our March book, “In this House of Brede” at 4.5. A few of us "couldn't get into it." However, the others convinced us to persevere, as the book was well worth finishing.

For April we are reading “Rules of Civility” by Amor Towles. Set in 1938 Manhattan, a young working class woman finds herself propelled into high society and the jet set in the post-depression era. We chose this book because we truly enjoyed another book by this same author. Welcome to the two ladies who joined our group this month! All are welcome to join us April 12th at The Pantry at 1pm. Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites An Invitation to Join Us! Do you feel that you would like to strengthen your spiritual life? The Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites may provide just what you are seeking. We are a community of practicing Roman Catholics, both men and women, married and single (as well as secular priests and deacons) who desire a more intimate relationship with God. We pray the Liturgy of the Hours, wear the brown scapular of Our Lady, spend time in mental prayer, and study the spiritual works of the Carmelite Saints. The spiritual benefits are very rewarding! We meet the fourth Sunday of each month at St. Hubert’s in Harrison Township “Come and See!” Inquiry Meeting on May 20, 2018 at 12:30 P. M. Please call in advance. Contact: Margaret (586) 764-5128 or Judy (586) 222-6872.

St. Vincent de Paul Utica Thrift Store (45550 Van

Dyke) is proud to serve the Northern Macomb County Conference. We are so happy to be your store of

choice to help out those who are in need in our community. Our staff is grateful for the help of the

volunteers that we see coming time after time, giving so much and really showing how much they care about the cause. The store needs more help, during

the winter months volunteering is down, donations are down and shoppers do not come out as much. We

do not advertise, so we need everyone that knows about us to talk about us and show others the

way. St. Vincent de Paul does so much good for so many people, so please spread the word and bring

your friends, family and neighbors in to see us. If you are interested in volunteering—please call 586-323-5133

Thank you for Helping us Help Others.
