9AM FAMILY-STYLE EUCHARIST President: The Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe, Dean Deacon: Rob Till Preacher: The Revd Canon Heather Patacca, Precentor Reader: Peter Burman Intercessors: Rod Kennedy Gradual Hymn: Jesus’ hands were kind hands (hymn 5, pg. 14) Offertory Hymn: How sweet the name of Jesus sounds (hymn 6, pg. 15) Dismissal Hymn: O, for a closer walk with God (hymn 7, pg. 15) Organ Postlude: Choral and Variation on ‘Herzlich tut mich verlangen’ – Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847): Mrs Roslyn Carolane, Cathedral Assistant Organist.

COLLECT Lord our God, by your Holy Spirit write your commandments upon our hearts and grant us the wisdom and power of the cross, so that, cleansed from greed and selfishness, we may become a living temple of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FIRST READING 1 Kings 6 : 1, 11-22 1 In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, he began to build the house of the Lord. 11 Now the word of the Lord came to Solomon, 12 ‘Concerning this house that you are building, if you will walk in my statutes, obey my ordinances, and keep all my commandments by walking in them, then I will establish my promise with you, which I made to your father David. 13 I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.’ 14 So Solomon built the house, and finished it. 15 He lined the walls of the house on the inside with boards of cedar; from the floor of the house to the rafters of the ceiling, he covered them on the inside with wood; and he covered the floor of the house with boards of cypress. 16 He built twenty cubits of the rear of the house with boards of cedar from the floor to the rafters, and he built this within as an inner sanctuary, as the most holy place. 17 The house, that is, the nave in front of the inner sanctuary, was forty cubits long. 18 The cedar within the house had carvings of gourds and open flowers; all was cedar, no stone was seen. 19 The inner sanctuary he prepared in the innermost part of the house, to set there the ark of the covenant of the Lord. 20 The interior of the inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and twenty cubits high; he overlaid it with pure gold. He also overlaid the altar with cedar. 21 Solomon overlaid the inside of the house with pure gold, then he drew chains of gold across, in front of the inner sanctuary, and overlaid it with gold. 22 Next he overlaid the whole house with gold, in order that the whole house might be perfect; even the whole altar that belonged to the inner sanctuary he overlaid with gold. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

PSALM 19 : 1-6 1 The heavens declare the glory of God: and the firmament proclaims his handiwork 2 One day tells it to another: and night to night communicates knowledge. 3 There is no speech or language: nor are their voices heard. 4 Yet their sound has gone out through all the world: and their words to the ends of the earth. 5 There he has pitched a tent for the sun: which comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run his course. 6 Its rising is at one end of the heavens, and its circuit to their farthest bound: and nothing is hidden from its heat.

SECOND READING Revelation 21 : 1-4, 10-16, 22-27 18 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; 4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.’ 10 And in the spirit he carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. 11 It has the glory of God and a radiance like a very rare jewel, like jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It has a great, high wall with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates are inscribed the names of the twelve tribes of the Israelites; 13 on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city has twelve foundations, and on them are the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 The angel who talked to me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls. 16 The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width; and he measured the city with his rod, fifteen hundred miles; its length and width and height are equal. 22 I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. 25 Its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. 26 People will bring into it the glory and the honour of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practises abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING John 2 : 13-22

Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory. ‘Destroy this temple, my body,’ says the Lord, ‘and in three days, I will raise it up.’ The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. 15 Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’ 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’ 18 The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ 19 Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ 20 The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ 21 But he was speaking of the temple of his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

10.30AM CHORAL EUCHARIST President: The Revd Canon Dr Ruth Redpath, Canon Pastor Preacher: The Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe, Dean Readers: Barbara Burge and Canon Rob Deutscher Intercessor: Rob Till Processional Hymn: Lift high the cross (hymn 1, pg. 11) Gradual Hymn: Lord, keep us steadfast (hymn 2, pg. 12) Offertory Hymn: O Father, take in sign of love (hymn 3, pg. 13) Dismissal Hymn: Jesu, lover of my soul (hymn 4, pg. 13) Setting: Missa Rorate Coeli desuper, Hob XXII:3 – Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) Psalm Chant: Responsorial - Anthony Gregory Murray (1905-92) Communion motet: Lead me, Lord – Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)

Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness: make thy way plain before my face. For it is thou, Lord, thou, Lord, only, that makest me dwell in safety.

Organ Postlude: Andante from Trio Sonata No.4, BWV528 – J.S. Bach (1685-1750): Mr Mark Slavec, June Nixon Organ Scholar

COLLECT Lord our God, by your Holy Spirit write your commandments upon our hearts and grant us the wisdom and power of the cross, so that, cleansed from greed and selfishness, we may become a living temple of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FIRST READING Isaiah 50 : 4-9a 4 The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens— wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5 The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backwards. 6 I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7 The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8 he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9 It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty? Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

PSALM 19 : 1-6

Please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated.

The heavens declare the glory of God: and the firmament proclaims his handiwork; One day tells it to another: and night to night communicates knowledge. Response There is no speech or language: nor are their voices heard; Yet their sound has gone out through all the world: and their words to the ends of the earth. Response There he has pitched a tent for the sun: which comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run his course. Its rising is at one end of the heavens, and its circuit to their farthest bound: and nothing is hidden from its heat

SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 4 : 7-15 7 But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. 11 For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you. 13 But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—‘I believed, and so I spoke’—we also believe, and so we speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. 15 Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING John 18 : 13-14, 19-24

Please sing the Acclamation after the Cantor and repeat it as indicated

Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory. ‘I testify on my own behalf,’ says the Lord, ‘and the father who sent me testifies for me also.’ Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 13 First they took him to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better to have one person die for the people. 19 Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. 20 Jesus answered, ‘I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said to them; they know what I said.’ 22 When he had said this, one of the police standing nearby struck Jesus on the face, saying, ‘Is that how you answer the high priest?’ 23 Jesus answered, ‘If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong. But if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?’ 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

When David heard that Absalom was slain, he went up to his chamber over the gate, and wept; and thus he said: O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom, would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son.

Who has struck you so, my salvation, and with troubles so battered you? You are indeed not a sinner like us and our children. you do not know about transgressions.

I, I and my sins that are like little grains, that are to be found by the sea, of sand, they have provoked the distress that strikes you and the host of afflicting tortures.

Postlude: Allegro, first movement from Organ Sonata in F minor, Op 65, No 1 – Felix Mendelssohn (1809-47): Mr Lachlan Redd, Sub-Organist

PSALM 119 : 57 - 64

57 Thou art my portion, O Lord: I have promised to keep thy law. 58 I made my humble petition in thy presence with my whole heart: O be merciful unto me according to thy word. 59 I called mine own ways to remembrance: and turned my feet unto thy testimonies. 60 I made haste, and prolonged not the time: to keep thy commandments. 61 The congregations of the ungodly have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law. 62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee: because of thy righteous judgements. 63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee: and keep thy commandments. 64 The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: O teach me thy statutes.

FIRST READING Deuteronomy 6 : 1-9 1 Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the ordinances—that the Lord your God charged me to teach you to observe in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy, 2 so that you and your children and your children’s children may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life, and keep all his decrees and his commandments that I am commanding you, so that your days may be long. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe them diligently, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. 6 Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. 7 Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. 8 Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, 9 and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

SECOND READING 2 Timothy 3 : 10 – 4 : 8 10 Now you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions, and my suffering the things that happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. 12 Indeed, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 13 But wicked people and impostors will go from

9

bad to worse, deceiving others and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, 15 and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. 4.1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: 2

proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. 5 As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. 6 As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

HYMN 1: LIFT HIGH THE CROSS Michael Robert Newbolt (1874-1956) after George William Kitchin (1827-1912) Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised 633

12

Lift high the Cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name.

2

Led on their way by this triumphant sign, the hosts of God in conquering ranks combine. Lift high the Cross …

3

Saved by this Cross whereon their Lord was slain, the children of Adam their lost home regain. Lift high the Cross …

4

From north and south, from east and west they raise in growing unison their song of praise. Lift high the Cross …

HYMN 2: LORD, KEEP US STEADFAST Martin Luther (1483-1546), tr. Catherine Winkworth (1827-78) alt. Together in Song 436

2

Lord Jesus Christ, your power make known, for you are Lord of lords alone; defend your holy church, that we may sing your praise eternally.

3

O Comforter of priceless worth, grant one mind to your flock on earth; support us in our final strife, and lead us out of death to life.

13

HYMN 3: O FATHER, TAKE IN SIGN OF LOVE James Quinn sj (1919–2010) Australian Hymn Book 588 Reproduced with permission

2

These gifts another gift will be, thy Son in very deed, for us a willing victim made, the Lamb on whom we feed.

4

He now has giv’n us as his own his off’ring made to thee: his body broken, blood outpoured, for us on Calvary.

3

These are the gifts thy Son did bless the night before he died: by which he showed himself a priest and victim crucified.

5

This bread his body will become, this wine his blood will be; our humble gifts will be the gift that is most dear to thee.

6

This perfect gift thou wilt restore to greatest and to least, to make all one in love and joy in thy communion-feast.

HYMN 4: JESU, LOVER OF MY SOUL Charles Wesley (1707-88) Australian Hymn Book 139i

14

2

Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on thee; leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me; all my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; cover my defenceless head with the shadow of thy wing.

3

Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in thee I find, raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name; I am all unrighteousness; false and full of sin I am, thou art full of truth and grace.

4

Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; let the healing streams abound, make and keep me pure within: thou of life the fountain art, freely let me take of thee, spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity.

HYMN 5: JESUS’ HANDS WERE KIND HANDS Margaret Beatrice Cropper (1886-1980) Together in Song 236, Reproduced with permission.

Take my hands, Lord Jesus, let them work for you, make them strong and gentle, kind in all I do; let me watch you, Jesus, till I’m gentle too, till my hands are kind hands, quick to work for you.

15

HYMN 6: HOW SWEET THE NAME OF JESUS SOUNDS John Newton (1725-1807) New English Hymnal 374

2

It makes the wounded spirit whole, and calms the troubled breast; ’tis manna to the hungry soul, and to the weary, rest.

4

Jesus! my Shepherd, Brother, Friend, my Prophet, Priest and King, my Lord, my Life, my Way, my End, accept the praise I bring.

3

Dear name, the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding-place, my never-failing treasury filled with boundless stores of grace.

5

Weak is the effort of my heart, and cold my warmest thought; but when I see thee as thou art, I’ll praise thee as I ought.

6

Till then I would thy love proclaim with every fleeting breath; and may the music of thy Name refresh my soul in death.

HYMN 7: O FOR A CLOSER WALK WITH GOD William Cowper (1731-1800) Australian Hymn Book 488

2

Return, O holy Dove, return, sweet messenger of rest. I hate the sins that made thee mourn, and drove thee from my breast.

3

The dearest idol I have known, whate’er that idol be, help me to tear it from thy throne and worship only thee.

16

4

So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame; so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb.

HYMN 8: MAY THE MIND OF CHRIST MY SAVIOUR Katie Barclay Wilkinson (1859-1928) alt. Together in Song 609

2

May the word of God dwell richly in my heart from hour to hour so that all may see I triumph only through his power.

4

May the love of Jesus fill me as the waters fill the sea; him exalting, self denying, this is victory.

3

May the peace of God my Father rule my life in everything, that I may be calm to comfort sick and sorrowing.

5

May I run the race before me strong and brave to face the foe, looking only unto Jesus as I onward go.

6

May his beauty rest upon me, as I seek the lost to win, and may they forget the channel, seeing only Him.

17

HYMN 9: AND CAN IT BE Charles Wesley (1707-88) alt. Together in Song 209

2

’Tis mystery all! The immortal dies: who can explore this strange design? In vain the first-born seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, let angel minds inquire no more.

4

Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound in sin and nature’s night: thine eye diffused a quickening ray – I woke; the dungeon flamed with light! My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

3

He left his Father’s throne above (so free, so infinite his grace!), emptied himself of all but love, and bled for Adam’s helpless race. ’Tis mercy all, immense and free: for, O my God, it found out me.

5

No condemnation now I dread: Jesus, and all in him, is mine! Alive in him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ, my own.

18

HYMN 10: BE THOU MY VISION Irish, 8th century, tr. Mary Byrne (1880-1931) Versified by Eleanor Hull (1860-1935). New English Hymnal 339

Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord, be thou my great Father, thy child let me be, be thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.

Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight, be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might, be thou my soul’s shelter, be thou my strong tower, O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise, be thou my inheritance now and always, be thou and thou only the first in my heart, O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, thou heaven’s bright Sun, O grant me its joys after vict’ry is won, great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all.
