I think we have accomplished a lot together, and I sense that you are ready to embrace an inviting and exciting future with a settled pastor. Now when you might expect that right candidate to come alongno one quite knows; so in the meantime, while we are waiting, there are a few things I think might be helpful to work on and toward: 1. I would like to see us focus on stewardship this year. I think it might be helpful to have a process for pledging in place. Pledging is one tool churches use to help decide and discern their ministry and mission objectives for the coming year. It helps to have a sense of how much money the church might take in, so budgets, projects, and dreams can be realistically planned. On a personal level, pledging elevates our giving to the level of a spiritual discipline. A spiritual discipline is a practice that helps support and enhance our faith. So, working on stewardship, with an eye toward pledging, is one goal for this year. 2. Another goal I have is to help make sure all our committees are functioning as effectively and smoothly as possible. Good functioning committees will be a support and a blessing to an incoming pastor. Maybe sometime this Spring we can have an All-Committee Evening. It would be a time for everyone serving on a committee to meet, go over their respective duties and responsibilities, and decide together what is working, what needs to be tweaked, and how the committee fits into the overall structure and vision of and for the church. 3. One area that definitely needs attention is the area of youth. I am sure that a new pastor will be great with the youth of the churchbut as for me, I could use a little help! So, the last goal I have is to brainstorm ways to either recruit volunteers that would form a Youth Ministry Team, or find a way to hire someone to make sure this important work of the church gets done. Either way, I am open to suggestions. I hope these goals match what you have noticed and been thinking about the church. If not, I can surely adjust. The important thing is that we keep moving forward together to make St. Paul’s UCC the best and most faithful church we can be. That is a goal of which I am sure your new pastor will approve. Many Blessings, Pastor Donna

Seeking to Know, Grow In, and Show the Ways of Jesus

Letter from the Pastor

We have come a long way at St. Paul’s UCC this last year and a half. I am very proud of the way we

have dealt with “George’s” leaving. I am proud of the way we have rebounded—with dignity and grace. I love

it when I hear good things being spoken about you in the community and from those who visit us. I think we

have accomplished a lot together, and I sense that you are ready to embrace an inviting and exciting future with

a settled pastor. Now when you might expect that right candidate to come along—no one quite knows; so in the

meantime, while we are waiting, there are a few things I think might be helpful to work on and toward:

1. I would like to see us focus on stewardship this year. I think it might be helpful to have a process for

pledging in place. Pledging is one tool churches use to help decide and discern their ministry and

mission objectives for the coming year. It helps to have a sense of how much money the church might

take in, so budgets, projects, and dreams can be realistically planned. On a personal level, pledging

elevates our giving to the level of a spiritual discipline. A spiritual discipline is a practice that helps

support and enhance our faith. So, working on stewardship, with an eye toward pledging, is one goal for

this year.

2. Another goal I have is to help make sure all our committees are functioning as effectively and smoothly

as possible. Good functioning committees will be a support and a blessing to an incoming pastor. Maybe

sometime this Spring we can have an All-Committee Evening. It would be a time for everyone serving

on a committee to meet, go over their respective duties and responsibilities, and decide together what is

working, what needs to be tweaked, and how the committee fits into the overall structure and vision of

and for the church.

3. One area that definitely needs attention is the area of youth. I am sure that a new pastor will be great

with the youth of the church—but as for me, I could use a little help! So, the last goal I have is to

brainstorm ways to either recruit volunteers that would form a Youth Ministry Team, or find a way to

hire someone to make sure this important work of the church gets done. Either way, I am open to

suggestions.

I hope these goals match what you have noticed and been thinking about the church. If not, I can surely

adjust. The important thing is that we keep moving forward together to make St. Paul’s UCC the best and most

faithful church we can be. That is a goal of which I am sure your new pastor will approve.

Many Blessings,

Pastor Donna

Who waits in Heaven above…

Tho I can no longer send a special card,

I still send my eternal love…

Especially on this date…

I know in life I was so, so blessed,

To have found my ‘True Soulmate’…

or just because…Sign-up sheets for altar flowers are in the lobby. The flowers are yours to take with you after the service of worship.

CHURCH MEMBERSHIP

**Anyone who is interested in joining St. Paul’s UCC should contact Pastor

Donna or the church office.**

There will be no Sunday School classes on

Sunday, February 28th due to the Sausage Dinner.

CONFIRMATION FIELD TRIPS I have arranged for our class to visit some other churches and worship communities, as a way

of experiencing the wider church.

On Sunday, February 14, 2016 (Valentine’s Day) we are scheduled to worship at the

Emmaus Chapel—on their campus. Worship begins at 9.30 a.m. After worship we will be given a

tour of the campus, there will be an activity with the residents, and then a chance to have lunch

together—a brown bag affair. The 14th was chosen because the Emmaus choirs are not scheduled

to sing anywhere—which means more residents will be at church that day. I think we are

providing the activity—such as making valentines. I will find that out for sure, however.

In March or early April we will visit Christ the King UCC in Florissant, MO. Christ the

King is a predominately African American Church. The worship should be fun and

exciting. After worship we may meet with some of the youth from Christ the King.

Please get these dates on your calendars.

I will need drivers of course, so if you can drive, let me know.

Thanks for all your support and help,

Pastor Donna

LENTEN WEDNESDAYS

The title for our Lenten series this year is: The Way—Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus. This is a video

series. Each session lifts up a part of the ministry of Jesus. The leaders guide for the series describes it like

this: "You will be embarking on a most significant journey, for you will be walking in the footsteps of Jesus

during the course of his ministry. Along the way, you will listen to Jesus teach, watch him perform miracles,

spend time with his friends (not always the top tier of society), and find yourself transformed. The video will

put you on the ground, seeing and experiencing the things Jesus saw as he traveled the length and breadth of

Galilee and Judea. But this is not just a study of geography or history. It is a call to discipleship. It is a journey

with the Christ who still walks with us and invites us to follow his footsteps. Throughout the series, you will be

challenged to a greater commitment to Jesus as Lord and King of our lives."

February 10, 2016—(Ash Wednesday)—Baptism and Temptation—"Baptism and the temptation were

defining moments in the life and ministry of Jesus. For us, baptism and the struggle with temptation can also be

defining moments." This week we will follow these two Biblical stories and relate them to our lives.

February 17, 2016—The Healing Ministry—"Clearly, while Jesus sought to relieve suffering of every kind, he

took every opportunity doing so to teach people about the Kingdom of God. Reading the miracle stories and

being amazed at the compassion of Jesus is not the end in itself. The task to which Jesus calls us is learning to

be disciples who live out that same kind of compassion. Each one of us must be a stretcher-bearer for others.

For in so doing, we will love as Jesus first loved us."

February 24, 2016—Proclaiming the Kingdom—This week we will look at "three devices Jesus used when he

taught: similes, parables, and the prophetic voice--speaking in bold terms to make a point." We will think

about how each of these devices reveals a dimension of the Kingdom, and think about how we can respond to

Jesus' teachings with faith and courage.

March 2, 2016—Calming the Storm—"We will recognize that these well-loved and familiar stories are not just

for children's Sunday school class; in fact, they touch our lives to the depths of our being. Each of us has a

choice: we can trust and believe that Jesus comes to us in our need, calling us to serve him; or we can continue

in doubt, anxiety, and fear."

March 9, 2016—Sinners, Outcasts, and the Poor—"Few of us succeed in being as open to undesirables as

Jesus was. We can't flip a switch and move from prejudice to the kind of genuine openness that Jesus

displayed. But we can and must grow in that direction. Thus, we recognize the gift that God has given us,

namely the sanctifying grace that enables us, prejudiced sinners, to grow incrementally toward Christ-likeness

in all that we are and all that we do."

March 16, 2016—The Final Week—"Untimely and always, the Crucifixion is a mystery. We know that we

are granted abundant and everlasting life through the cross and empty tomb. Just how this takes place is not

ours to comprehend; we accept it and indeed know it, through faith, as a miracle of love."

Prayer For Peace Lord, make me an instrument:

Where there is hatred…let me sow love.

Where there is injury…pardon.

Where there is doubt…faith.

Where there is despair…hope.

Where there is darkness…light.

Where there is sadness…joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

To be consoled…as to console,

To be understood…as to understand,

To be loved…as to love. For…

It is in giving …that we receive,

It is in pardoning…that we are pardoned,

It is in dying…that we are born to eternal life.
