16th Sunday of Ordinary Time That we may allow stewardship to blossom in our hearts and joyfully share our gifts. “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field…He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.” Matthew 13:24, 37-38 As children

of God, we are all “good seeds”. We are blessed by God with the potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s plan when we spend time in prayer every day, use our skills to help others and share our financial gifts to help build God’s kingdom on earth. Through our example of gratitude and generosity we sow “good seeds” on earth and ultimately help each other get to Heaven!

Thank you for the generous one-time donations and continued regular weekly or monthly giving during these difficult times. The staff and I thank you for your support to our parish. Stay safe. Stay healthy. I said, “I am falling”; but your constant love, O Lord, held me up. Psalm 94:18

The United States Council of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Pro Life Committee has a new initiative for the 2020-2021 year entitled

“Walking with Moms in Need: A Year of Service” Pregnant and parenting moms in need are in our parishes and our neighborhoods. As Pope Francis reminds us, our parishes need to be “islands of mercy in the midst of a sea of indifference.” Our parish would like to join this initiative by assessing what local resources are available, expanding those resources and better communicating this information to local pregnant moms and families in need. Isis Reardon is our Core Team Leader for this initiative and needs a enthusiastic member to join her Core Team. If God has put it on your heart to serve pregnant and parenting moms, please contact Isis at [email protected] . To learn more about this initiative, visit www.walkingwithmoms.com. This is an initiative that can be achieved from the comfort and safety of your home during its initial phases. God bless!

Adult Ministry and Faith Formation: Because our faith is too rich and too beautiful to have ever learned it all…

Adult faith formation at St Paul the Apostle Catholic Church is centered around the understanding that living “The Way” taught by Jesus Christ is a life-long, evolving journey, involving both effort and decision. To enable adults to explore the faith and deepen their knowledge of God’s Word, we provide many opportunities to come together in a learning environment. As a diverse community with a small parish feel, we know it is important to walk that journey with others and to share what we have learned along the way.

Adult Ministry at St. Paul’s—Meeting you Wherever you Are

St. Paul’s offers a wide variety of ministries and programs to help community members grow in faith regardless of where they are on their journeys. If you are someone just returning to the faith, we have a small group for you. If you are interested in learning more about becoming Catholic, we have something for you, too. If you are active in your faith but feel like you have still more growth to achieve, we have programs for you, too. All these programs are being offered online using Zoom. If you have a need that you think we aren’t meeting, let us know so we can work together to help accomplish that. Contact Heidi for more info: [email protected] or 281-333-3891, ext. 328.

For those Considering Catholicism Our RCIA program is created specifically to welcome seekers at any time throughout the year. If you feel like God is calling you to learn more about becoming Catholic, now is a great time to respond to that call. Our RCIA program is currently meeting online, and we have options to help regardless of what your availability might be. Contact Heidi at [email protected] or call 281-333-3891, ext. 328.

On the Horizon: Discovering our Dignity Bible Study for Women

Our always-popular women’s Bible studies are wrapping up for the summer, but we are looking forward to another amazing offering beginning in September. The book we’ll be using is called Discovering our Dignity, and it’s a study of women of the Bible. Imagine the most well-known women of the Bible stepping into your life and sharing with you their best advice about the things in life that really matter. That’s the focus of Discovering our Dignity. Two sessions will be offered—one on Monday evening and the other on Tuesday morning. Want more info? Contact Heidi at 281-333-3891, ext. 328 or [email protected]

Congratulations, New Catholics! In the last several weeks, we joyfully have welcomed nine new Catholics who, after completing their journeys through RCIA, have either been baptized into the faith or made Professions of Faith after having been baptized in another religion. We are grateful for the beauty and richness that each of these individuals brings to our faith community. Congratulations Dylan Chagoya, Virginia Frank, Adelynne Guerra, Matt Higgs, Estevan Leyva, Rey Lopez, Steven Murray, Michael Karousos, and Josue Parr.

Updates from ACTS Regular ACTS events have been an ongoing part of community life at St. Paul’s for 15 years. Except for a brief interruption following Hurricane Harvey, this is the first time that our church community has had to postpone a significant portion of the ministerial and community events that ACTS offers our parish family. To date, the women’s July retreat in English, the men’s September retreat in English, and the annual Men Who Cook fund raiser have all been cancelled or postponed. The ACTS Core Team agreed that keeping the health and well-being of community members is of utmost importance. Team members are working on an alternative community building event for everyone and also are committed to supporting our annual parish festival in every way possible.

Men’s Friday Rise Continues Despite the need for social distancing, many groups and ministries continue to meet online and in other, creative ways. Among them is the weekly men’s Rise group which meets online via Zoom from 7-8 a.m. on Friday mornings. They discuss that weekend’s scripture readings, opportunities for service, and share aspects of their faith journeys. If you’d like more information about joining them, contact Marcus at 832-250-3897 or Brian at 713-560-8412. Newcomers are always welcome!

Reflection and Questions for Deeper Reflection In a garden, often those things we call weeds have a much stronger hold in the ground and grow quickly compared to young plants, such as wheat. When we pull up the weeds, the desired plants can come with them. Many of us are willing to sacrifice a plant or two to this necessary removal of the undesired weeds. In this parable, Jesus is saying, “No, all of the plants are sacred. All are important.” As human beings none of us are 100 percent pure or 100 percent evil. We are a mixture and find ourselves doing good deeds and deeds that are not so good. Nevertheless, God loves us.

♦ Who do you think the farmer is in this parable?

♦ What does the wheat represent?

♦ Who comes at night to sow the weeds?

♦ What does the harvest represent?

♦ Which do you want to be, the wheat or the weeds?

New Mass Schedule

Houston is known across the nation as one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the nation. At St. Paul, we take pride in being as diverse as Houston and in mirroring the composition and diversity of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Beginning this weekend of July 18-19, 2020, we are adding a second Mass in Spanish to better meet the needs of our Spanish-speaking brothers and sisters who now number about 50% of us. In a time when social distancing is so important, taking this step will help relieve the over-crowding at the noon Mass in Spanish. At the same time, we will continue to celebrate three Masses in English every weekend. Saturday Masses

Vigil Mass in English at 5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass in Spanish at 7:00 p.m. (New!)

Sunday Masses 9:00 a.m. in English 12:00 noon in Spanish 5:00 p.m. in English

Weekday Masses 8:30 a.m. Daily Mass in English, Tuesday – Friday 7:00 p.m. Daily Mass in Spanish, Thursday

In addition to the new mass schedule, Masses are available on the parish YouTube channel every Sunday at 8:00 am in both languages.
