STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8)

Every day, in little ways and in big ways, God asks, “Whom shall I send?” Whether it is someone to take on a new ministry, to give a friendly smile to a stranger or say a word of encouragement to a friend, God constantly provides opportunities to help someone in need. The next time you hear God calling, have the courage to walk through the door and say “Here I am, Lord.”

Citing personal reasons, our Music Director, Jaden Karr has resigned, effective January 31. We offer him our prayers and best wishes as he continues his ministry wherever God leads him. He said he will be available to us occasionally as his schedule allows. So, now we resume our journey of searching for a new Music Director. Please pray for someone to become available for us.

Whew!! Didn’t we have a lot of fun with all the events of January 27 through February 2!!!! Thank you for all who helped bring about all the events, especially St. Patrick Junior High dinner for the Food Pantry and St. Paul annual Spaghetti Dinner for Catholic Schools Week. “Thank you” and “God bless you” to Suzanne Tobuck and crew; Frank Zamarelli and crew; Mr. Pancurak, students, parents, faculty and staff; and all our parishioners. Let’s do it again – next year!

If anyone who attended Pat Shoemaker’s funeral discovers that he has the wrong black coat, please contact the parish office. One of the men discovered that a coat, similar or identical with his, was taken by mistake. We look forward to bringing about the exchange of coats. Thank you.

St. Patrick Parishioners are gearing up for pierogies! Lent will be here next month and the sale of pierogies must go on. If you are able to help in any way, please contact Sister Joan for information.

Like many of you, I enjoyed the recent respite from the cold and snow.

With love, prayers, and gratitude,

Father Bob Edwards

Father Bob’s Corner .

Dear Friends,

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts!.

- Isaiah 6:3

The Prophet Isaiah tells us how the Lord commissioned him as a prophet in the sixth chapter of the prophetic book which bears his name. Envisioning the holiness of God, Isaiah recognizes his personal sin and the sin of the people among whom he lives. But his feeling of dread and recognition of sin is dealt with as the angel purifies him with an ember from the altar. Thus cleansed, Isaiah is able and eager to respond to the Lord’s desire for someone to go to the Israelites. In gratitude and humility, Isaiah volunteers, “Here I am, send me!”

Peter has a similar, but more personal encounter – in his own fishing boat! The miraculous catch of fish reveals the extreme holiness of Jesus. Peter admits to being sinful, but God’s will prevails and Peter is commissioned as one who will be “catching men.” Sin is not an insurmountable obstacle. God forgives. Similarly, we need to allow the divine work of God’s forgiveness to remove obstacles of sin in us. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is the doorway to our renewed life in God.

Monday, February 11, is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and the 27th World Day of the Sick, initiated by Pope John Paul II. This year Pope Francis urges us to promote a culture of generosity – like that seen in the lives of those who care for the sick. Visits and prayers are always appreciated by those who are sick. Let’s reach out to them. God bless them.

World Youth Day 2019 with Pope Francis- JMJ Panama

A delegation from Youngstown Diocese, Ohio participated in the spiritual and liturgical programs with thousands of international youth from the five continents for Pope Francis’s visit to Panama. There was an indescribable impact in the lives of the Youngstown youth who were able to respond to this event for the first time. Definitely, the work of the Holy Spirit left a print of His love, wisdom, hope and faith in their hearts and in their memories as vivid experiences full of meaning that only God can share where there is a multitude with a big expectation.

Something important that I remember from Pope Francis’s message directed to the youth, is his idea that the life of each young man and woman is not like a passive individual who receives everything from the adults. Contrary, they are people that need to assume active roles if they want to build their future; and the role of adults is to consider them as protagonists of the present and support them in order to assume their life responsibilities today and now. The Pope cried out against the attempt of our societies to “reassure and numb young people so they don’t question themselves or ask questions.”

Youngstown Delegation from left to right: Father Ernesto Rodriguez, Marizela Leon from St. Paul parish Salem, Jassmin Alvarez from St. Anthony/All Saints parish Canton, Cristina Hernandez from St. Anthony/All Saints parish Canton, and JanCarlos LeBron from St. Brendan parish Youngstown.

Subscribe to the Catholic Exponent From the prophet Isaiah, whom we encounter in the first reading today, we learn of Isaiah’s overwhelming vision of God in His glory, surrounded by the angels. As he feels his unworthiness, Isaiah sees one of the angels coming to him to cleanse him. Then God speaks directly to Isaiah. "Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?" "Here I am," Isaiah, responds, "Send me!" All of us who have been baptized in the life of Jesus have been cleansed and prepared to be sent by God into the world, bringing His word, the Good News that He gave us. To help us carry that word, we need guidance about what we will face, what the world needs, and how to best proclaim that Good News. That is one of the many reasons for reading the Catholic Exponent, your diocesan newspaper. The news, commentary, Scripture reflection, and adult faith formation found in the pages of the Exponent remind us that we have been sent and Who has sent us and help guide us in carrying out the mission to our families, friends, co-workers, and others we encounter in our everyday lives.

Subscribe or renew your subscription today by dropping “The Catholic Exponent” envelope from your parish packet into the collection basket. Sign up sheets by the church doors, or call 330-744-5251. Carry forth God’s word. Read and support the Catholic Exponent.
