THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (B) .. .. .. REFLECTION Even as the season of Ordinary Time begins to gather momentum, many may still be on summer holidays or at

least in a holiday frame of mind. Today’s readings have a dynamism about them that may jolt us out of our easy

lethargy. Welcome or unwelcome, the call to repent – to change our ways – is in the air.

We hear of the prophet Jonah’s successful mission to the Ninevites of old; we hear Jesus’ summons to his hearers

to “repent and believe the Good News”; and we hear Paul the apostle warning the Corinthians (and now us) that the

approach of the end times calls for freedom of heart. Most of the time, we do not like change, even when it

promises better things. This Sunday is our opportunity to move into the new school and working year with a

willingness to “let go and let God”.

ENTRANCE SONG: Praise to the Lord AOV2-132

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation.

O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation.

Come all who hear, now to his altar draw near, joining in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, who shall prosper our work and defend us. Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend us. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do

who with his love will befriend us.

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that has life and breath come now with praises before him! Let the “Amen” sound from his people again, now as we worship before him! Text:Lobe den Herren, de machtigen Konig; Joachim Neander, 1650-1680; tr by Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878,

alt. Tune: LOBE DEN HERREN, 14 14 47 8; Stralsund Gesangbuch, 1665; descant by C.S. Lang, 1891-1971, © 1953, Novello and Co. Ltd. All rights reserved. Used with permission under ONE LICENSE #A-640286.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: CDs p51 Yr B

Response: Teach me your ways, O Lord.

APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated

at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

PREPARATION OF GIFTS: Everlasting Your Love AOV1-128

Refrain: Everlasting your love. Everlasting your love. From age to age your covenant endures.

Who alone does wonders with compassion and mercy?

The God above ev’ry other pow’r: to you alone give glory!

Who created the heavens, planting earth on the waters? Who made the moon to rule over night; who made the sun to rule the day?

Who exalts the lowly; who releases the captive, So those oppressed find justice at last,

and those in chains find liberty? Text: Ps 136:1-6,8-9: Magnificat. Text and music © 1988, Bob Hurd. Published by OCP Publications. All rights reserved. All rights reserved. Used with permission under ONE LICENSE #A-640286

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION: Mass of St Francis No 1

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again.

COMMUNION SONG: Blest Are They GA477/AOV1-55 Blest are they, the poor in spirit,

theirs is the kingdom of God. Blest are they, full of sorrow, they shall be consoled.

Refrain: Rejoice and be glad!

Blessed are you, holy are you! Rejoice and be glad! Yours is the kingdom of God! Blest are they, the lowly ones,

they shall inherit the earth. Blest are they who hunger and thirst, they shall have their fill.

Blest are they who show mercy, mercy shall be theirs. Blest are they, the pure of heart, they shall see God!

Blest are they who seek peace, they are the children of God.

Blest are they who suffer in faith,

the glory of God is theirs.

Blest are you who suffer hate, all because of me. Rejoice and be glad, yours is the kingdom; shine for all to see. Text: Matthew 5:3-12; David Haas, b.1957 Tune: David Haas, b. 1957; vocal

SONG AFTER COMMUNION: The Lord is My Shepherd GA506/AOV1-26

The Lord is my shepherd, and I want to follow, wherever he leads me, wherever he goes, Over the mountains, the waters and byways,

valleys and highways he’s waiting for me. Refrain: I want to go to meet him there,

to lay myself down in his love. The Lord is my shepherd and I want to

follow, Wherever he leads me, wherever he goes. And while on the journey to where we are going, he promised to be there to help us along.

And over the mountains we’ll walk on together, To know all the wonders he’s given to me. Text: Brian Boniwell, © 1981, Spectrum Publications Tune: Brian Boniwell, © 1981, Spectrum Publications; arr. by Jane Wood, b.1954, © 1994 All rights reserved. Used with permission under ONE LICENSE #A-640286

RECESSIONAL: Sing a New Song GA414/AOV1-80

Refrain: Sing a new song unto the Lord; let your song be sung from mountains

high. Sing a new song unto the Lord, singing alleluia. Yahweh’s people dance for joy! O come before the Lord. And play for him on glad tambourines,

and let your trumpet sound. Rise, O children, from your sleep; Your Saviour now has come. He has turned your sorrow to joy, And filled your soul with song.

Glad my soul for I have seen the glory of the Lord. The trumpet sounds; the dead shall be raised. I know my Saviour lives. Text: Psalm 98; Dan Schutte, b. 1947 Tune: Dan Schutte, b. 1947 © 1972, Daniel L Schutte, administered by
