25 July 2019 Dear Parents and Guardians, I recently read the book “Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t” by Jim Collins and while it is not directly related to schools, I think a lot of the findings are very applicable anyway. In this book, Collins says, “Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don't have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don't have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.” We have come a long way, but we cannot ever be satisfied with being a ‘good’ school. That’s not who we are. The problem with accepting the fact of being a good school, is that you never manage to stay good. By stagnating, you actually backslide without even realising it. And as said before, we cannot do it without you. We have to do everything in our power to become a great school. I would appreciate your input. How do you think we can change St Patrick’s CBC into a great school. What is the determining factors between a good and a great school? What is currently keeping us from being a great school? Please email your feedback to [email protected], or drop off your feedback at Reception for my attention. Thank you for the wonderful turnout of parents at both Achievers’ Assemblies earlier this week. It was, once again a beautiful celebration of ‘greatness’ and I am very proud of every single pupil who met the criteria to either be in the Top 10 or those who received an Age Quod Agis badge. Well done to all! At the High School Achievers' Assembly, a phenomenal 11 Colours blazers were awarded. 2018 Matric pupil, Mkhuseli Mayekiso, was one of the blazer recipients, but was unfortunately unable to attend. 2019 Deputy Head Prefect, Nai Dong Chen, received his 1 St Patrick’s CBC Weekly Information Sheet 24 - 2019

25 July 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I recently read the book “Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t” by Jim Collins and while it is not directly related to schools, I think a lot of the findings are very applicable anyway.

In this book, Collins says, “Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don't have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don't have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.”

We have come a long way, but we cannot ever be satisfied with being a ‘good’ school.

2019 Deputy Head Prefect, Nai Dong Chen, received his white blazer for Music, and is currently the only pupil with a white blazer in the High School.

As mentioned in last week’s WIS, we would love to get to know the school family better. You may either post your photo on our Facebook page (please look for the post inviting you to share your family photo), or alternatively, please share your family photo with us by emailing it to [email protected]. By emailing your photo, you give us permission to share it on our school’s Facebook page (St Patrick’s CBC Kimberley).

A number of parents have indicated that they would like to attend Letlotlo Choeu’s funeral. The funeral arrangements have been confirmed as follows:

Our sincerest condolences to Reitumetse Gaborone in Grade 11 who lost her elder brother, Boitumelo Gaborone in June.

Thank you to all parents who attended the Report Discussion Meetings this week. Your interest and support are appreciated.

Kindly note, due to the extensive renovations currently taking place in the hall, the School of the Arts Quarterly Concert will take place in the Main Chapel at 18h00 on Monday, 29 July 2019. It is free of charge and we cordially invite all parents to join us there.

Our school will be celebrating its 122nd Birthday on the weekend of 6-8 September 2019. 7 September is a compulsory school day. Please keep this in mind when planning weekends away during the school term.

The blue PT golf shirts and socks are now available for purchase in the Uniform Shop.

Please be reminded that your child is not allowed to go on school tours if his/her school fees are not paid up to date. Unfortunately, we cannot knowingly add to your financial burden, if you are already struggling to meet your basic obligations of paying school fees on time.

Please keep our Winter Games delegation in your prayers, for their safety on and off the field, as well as for their safe return on Saturday.

Yours sincerely,

Jacques TredouxExecutive Head

BIRTHDAY WEEKEND7 September 2019

St Patrick’s CBC is turning 122 this year, what a remarkable achievement. For this occasion, the school will be hosting an Inflatable Park & Fair on Back Field on Saturday, 7 September, with a variety of games and activities. There will be a combination of free and charged for activities. The objective is to have a social, fun day for all our pupils and their families. There will also be a variety of food stalls to enjoy.

Please note that it is a compulsory school day for all pupils from age 3 to Grade 11. Each grade, or in some instances phase, was allocated a game and food stall to coordinate and man on the day. When you receive a letter or phone call from the relevant teacher, please offer your time on the day. You do not have to work at a stall all day long, but if every parent gets involved, the load is so much lighter on all involved.

All pupils should please be on Back Field at 08h00 for roll call and the programme will end at approximately 13h00.

If your child has lost his/her name badge, replacement badges may be ordered from the Finance Office at a cost of R50.00 each. Kindly note: we have to order a minimum of 10 badges at a time, so please be patient as there may be a delay in delivery time.

child to attend the Equine Demonstration as facilitated by Horse Worx and Equitherapy Centre on Thursday, 01 August 2019. I acknowledge that horse-riding activities are inherently a dangerous pastime and that an inherent risk that injury may occur is present. I acknowledge that my child voluntarily, and at their own risk, participates in the activities of the demonstration.
