SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY APRIL 8 , 2018
Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Today in the Church, we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. Instituted in the Jubilee Year of 2000,
St. Faustina’s Diary (St. Faustina was a religious sister in Poland in the early 20th century, from which the
Divine Mercy devotion was received) “records 14 occasions when Jesus requested that a Feast of Mercy
(Divine Mercy Sunday) be observed, for example:”
My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy
be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths
of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach
the Fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall
obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. … Let no soul fear to draw near to Me. … It
is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have
peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary, no. 699)
“On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the
Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.” (usccb website)
Also associated with this feast is what’s called a plenary indulgence. If confession forgives our
sins (think of an analogy of breaking a window), think of this as a gift from the Church who steps
forward as a generous benefactor to replace the window so all is made right again. “The plenary
indulgence is granted (under the usual conditions of a sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion
and a prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on Divine Mercy Sunday, in a
spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, recite the Our Father and
the Creed, and also adding a devout prayer (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in
you!).” (divinemercysunday.com)
I encourage you to take advantage of this great gift.
God Bless,
Fr. Jim
[Fr. Jim note: going to confession can occur seven days before or after Divine Mercy Sunday to receive
the indulgence]
We give thanks to God that during the Easter
Vigil Mass, Crystal Clarke and her son Evan
were received into the Church and received the
sacraments of their first Holy Eucharist and
Confirmation. Please be sure to keep them in
prayer as they begin this new journey in the faith.
Congratulation Crystal and Evan!
This week, the Church celebrates Divine Mercy
Sunday, as proclaimed by the Universal Church.
Following the 10:30am Mass this Sunday April 8,
join Fr. Jim for the reciting of the Divine Mercy
Chaplet. After this, Fr. Jim will be available to
hear confessions of anyone present. May you have
a blessed and Holy Easter week!
