Merry Christmas Incarnate Mercy is born today!

Today we celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ, salvation and mercy has come to us in the form of a baby in the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. Among all our Christmas presents the Incarnation of Jesus is our greatest present of all. We have many reasons to be Merry about Christmas. We believe and confess that Jesus of Nazareth, born of a Jew, Mary, a daughter of Israel in Bethlehem at the time of King Herod the Great and Emperor Caesar Augustus, a carpenter by trade, who died crucified in Jerusalem under the procurator Pontius Pilate during the reign of Emperor Tiberius, is the eternal Son of God made man. He came from God, descended from heaven, and “came in the flesh” (1Jn 4:2). For “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father…And from his fullness have we all received grace upon grace” (Jn 1:14, 16). Belief in the true Incarnation of the Son of God is the distinctive sign of Christian faith: “By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit which confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God” (1Jn 4:2). Such is the joyous conviction of the Church from her beginning whenever she sings “the mystery of our religion”: “He was manifested in the flesh” (1Tim 3:16). We have much to give thanks for on this Christmas. Among other presents we should give thanks that Divine Mercy came to the earth to forgive and distribute God’s Mercy! Even more poignant is the Holy Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis! May we share our Merry Christmas with all we meet and wish peace upon humankind! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Peter John Sheehan
