Match Reports – Saturday 30 July 1st XV 31:22 Win The boys in white showed up to Hornsby expecting a tight game ahead. Both teams contested the ball heavily after the opening whistle however, it was Ollie Burston who opened the scoring after a well-timed run and a strong tackle break.

Darcy Searl was quick to convert to raise the score to 7-0 to Cranbrook. Jack Anderson scored for Cranbrook again soon after the restart and Searl converted yet again to make the score 14-0. However, Barker proved that they were still in the game after an aggressive rolling maul that involved more than half their team pushed them over the line, allowing their hooker to drop to the ground for their first try of the game.

Page 5: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

Barker’s conversion was unsuccessful and the score became 14-5 to Cranbrook. Cranbrook managed to hold Barker out with some tough defence but it was not enough to hold out Barker as they crossed the line again making the score 14-12 to Cranbrook at half time.

After the break, Searl and Renton performed some smooth backline moves to get Cranbrook into Barker’s 22 and a few moments afterwards Harry Doyle managed to spot a hole in Barker’s defence and dive over the line, raising the score to 19-12 to Cranbrook.

Barker replied shortly after to tighten the scores to 19-17 with Cranbrook still ahead. Some slick backline moves saw Ed Renton score a good counter attacking try to leave the score at 24-17. With 10 minutes left on the clock Cranbrook relaxed and Barker capitalised by scoring, rounding the score to 24-22 with Cranbrook just ahead. Pressure was building and as a result Barker cracked.

Page 6: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

They failed to exit out of their 22 and Cranbrook responded with an excellent lineout that moved the ball through the backline to Mitch Dickins who scored the final try.

Searl nailed the following conversion and managed to keep his great conversion rate up. Barker failed to come up with anything that would threaten Cranbrook’s defence and the game ended with the final score being 31-22 to Cranbrook.

2nd XV Loss 0:19 Following their win against St Aloysius at Hordern last weekend, adding to a 6 game undefeated streak, the 2nd XV travelled to Hornsby to face Barker in Round 8 of the CAS competition. With a strong forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier in the season.

Cranbrook kicked off and Barker responded with strong running from the get go. However, the first 20 minutes saw the 2nd XV create a number of opportunities close to the opposition line through strong pick and drive efforts by Jordan Maples, Harry Twomey and Connor Sprague. However, this was unable to be converted to points on the scoreboard. This attack was then backed up by strong defence in the 10, 20 and 30 channels off the ruck and by the backs.

Page 8: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

However, after inviting Barker into their half at the 25 minute mark through poor decision making, Cranbrook were down 7-0 at the break. After a renewed game plan, the 2nd XV entered the second half with great confidence to get a win away from home.

However, a poor defensive effort and smart line-out move after the kick-off led to another Barker try, with the score at 12-0 with 20 minutes to play. After another 10 minutes on Barker's line, Cranbrook again were unable to convert their efforts to points, knocking the ball on 1 metre from the try-line. A strong counter-attack and an impressive mid-air contest between Fraser Ross and the Barker winger off a cross field kick led to Barker scoring their second try, leaving the score at 19-0.

Page 9: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

Cranbrook then picked up the intensity, leaving nothing in the tank, and charged up the field through a combination of pick and drive and hitting gaps in the 30 channel to again leave Cranbrook 1 metre from Barker's line. However, yet again, Cranbrook did not convert to points and knocked the ball on on the line.

Despite the loss, Cranbrook could not be faulted on their effort. Leading into their big game against Waverley next week at home, the 2nd XV need to focus on line speed in defence and patience in attack when on the opposition line whilst maintaining their gutsy effort. 3rd XV Loss 27:33 After a series of slow starts the 3rds were determined to start well and dis this with a converted try after some sustained pressure. Logan and Garth were very solid in the rucks, Albert and Tex again carried and defended well. Matt Reynolds was an asset but we were perhaps content to rely on him too much. We need a mindset that we will not miss tackles. Support for the ball carrier was good as was the handling with outside backs Jack North and Bertie seeing some ball. Concentration lapses where we failed to catch the kick off or missed the odd tackle let Barker back into the game and ultimately cost us what was a potential win. We will need to be more focused this week against Waverley. 4th XV 12:51 Loss After a poor week of preparation and some punctuality issues before kick off, the 4th XV had their work cut out against a determined Barker outfit. Our kick off didn't go the 10 meters and unfortunately it set the tone for the rest of the 1st half. We gave Barker too much of the early territory and possession. They schooled us in support play, offloading at will and effortlessly recycling possession. They raced away to a massive half time lead as we failed to apply any defensive pressure.

Page 10: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

We managed to cross the line a couple of times in the second half through two of our best all season. John Tsakiris & Ted Hootman both scored long range 5 pointers beating half a dozen players each with sheer determination. 16A 0:29 Loss

On the weekend the Cranbrook 16A’s came up against a confident and in-form Barker side. In the opening minutes of the game Cranbrook let in a cheap try, which sparked some attitude adjustments from within the team.

Cranbrook steadied with some great distribution from George Head on the back of some hard running from Oscar May. As a result of poor discipline the Cranbrook side let off the pressure produced which resulted in the side being down 19-0 at the break.

Page 11: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

The second half started well for the side where they controlled a majority possession causing confusion in the Barker defence.

Further poor discipline resulted in two sin bins for the side, which caused two late tries resulting in the end score being 29-0. The Cranbrook side will prepare well for the last two rounds of the season. Tim White

16B 7:40 Loss The 16Bs went into training with a strong sense of confidence and excitement for the fixture against a well-trained Barker opposition who beat the boys in a tough first round.

Page 12: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

The boys found it tough to transfer the same intensity from training to the early morning game and just weren’t in it in the first half, having Barker score 4 tries. The boys needed to lift the intensity in the second half.

The backline was very evenly matched with Barker’s especially with Alex Buchen running hard lines and Finn Parker not missing a single tackle which allowed the boys to lift and start punching at the opposition’s line.

Page 13: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

Cranbrook’s only try was thanks to Bas Morton with the help of Isaac Antico and Billy McGrath got over the line through very well executed play. The boys look forward to the Waverley fixture as a way to redeem ourselves for what was a fairly disappointing weekend. 15A 7:7 Draw Cranbrook started well off the Kick off presenting many opportunities to score points. After an amazing run which lead to a converted try form Jude Gibbs Cranbrook was up 7 points to nil.

Cranbrook continued to have all the possession and field position but were unable to take advantage of their dominance to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Page 14: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

The second half was much of the same with Cranbrook making many line breaks but unable to find the last pass to get over the try line. Cranbrook’s inability to turn pressure into points haunted them as Barker went 95 metres in the last play of the game to come away with a 7 – 7 draw.

While it was a hard result for the team, it is one they must look to learn from in the weeks ahead. Darcy White 15B 7:27 Loss The Bs headed to Hordern on perfect day for rugby. It was an excellent start with some good defence holding Barker in the early stages.

But once again the first half just wasn't up to standard with some poor errors especially in defence leading to a 15-0 gap. Just before halftime Anthony Kourembanas went through a gap to score under the posts and make the scores 15-7 at half time.

Page 15: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

The second half started on a bad note with Nick Woods going down early with injury. We couldn’t get ourselves back in the game but there were some good stages which will give us plenty of confidence going into the next round. Best of luck to Woodsy in his recovery. Tom Greig 14A 12:19 Loss The 14A’s were eager to put in a good performance and take advantage of some great rugby conditions down at Hordern Oval. Unfortunately, Barker were able to score first points. However, the forwards managed to get on the ball creating some turnovers and putting us on the front foot.

Page 16: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

Some well executed backline moves and some strong running lines from Peter Masselos allowed Cranbrook to even the score. With Jayden McLachlan’s boot the boys were able to get some good field position, with Saxon Purcell eventually scoring in the corner.

The boys showed some ticker in the second half however a few errors and some missed opportunities allowed Barker to score two late tries to win 19-12.

The boys no doubt will look forward to putting in another good performance next round at Waverley. Toby May

14B 5:50 Loss The 14Bs took on Barker this weekend and came out swinging in the first half expecting an easy game from last time we played them. But the team had made drastic changes meaning we were on the back foot at the start but we gained momentum in the first half and were only a try down.

Unfortunately they gained territory at the end and outplayed us through some good attacking rugby. Angus Wilson

Page 18: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

13A 17:12 Win This Saturday the Cranbrook 13As took on Barker at their home ground. Some boys played different positions than usual, such as Liam Sartena and Grae Morris.

It was a sunny day with perfect rugby conditions. Daniel Lazerson scored the first try of the game early in the first half under the posts which led to a successful conversion by Oli Torrance.

Page 19: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

Still in the first half we held our defence and only let one try in which escalated into a successful conversion by Barker. At half time the score was 7-7.

In the second half Oli Torrance scored the first try of the half, followed by a break away try by Freddie Walton.

The Cranbrook 13As ended up winning 17-12. The boys all put in 110% effort to achieve this fantastic result. Daniel Lazerson

13B 19:32 Loss The 13Bs travelled out to Barker looking to build on their first round victory. It became clear from the kick off that we were in for a very tough physical game against a huge Barker forward pack. Barker scored the first few tries to put us on the back foot early in the game. Led by Sam Taranto, the boys stuck to their attacking structures and hit back, constantly threatening out wide. Sam Roberts-Lovell and James Sperling ran riot on the edges, however we were unable to convert into points. Unfortunately, our defensive line speed was not up to scratch and Barker’s powerful forwards piled on the pressure and extended their lead. In true Cranbrook style the boys fought to the end and scored the last try of the game after 10 phases of attack. 13C 0:52 Loss v St Josephs On Saturday we made the trip out to Hunters Hill and played against a strong and quick St Joseph’s team. The game started with the Joey’s boys firing with intensity and great line speed, pressuring our attack. However, we shifted the ball well but could not break through or around the opposition defensive line. It was a tough battle for the first part of the game with both attacks pressuring the opposition in good attacking positions. It was soon that one of the St Joseph’s boys broke through our defensive line and our swift fullback Nicolo Polese put his body on the line and almost pulled off a try-saving tackle. We went into half time three tries down. The second half had begun and the boys continued to put in an excellent effort with great defensive efforts from Patrick Mir and Joseph Harnett. Louis Mercer did an excellent job leading the team around the park, however the boys need to work on their discipline in defence and not giving away too many penalties. The boys are looking forward to getting stuck into training and playing well against Waverley at home next week. 13D 17:22 Loss The 13D’s knew they would be in for a huge challenge on Saturday, the away trip to Barker and a C team at Joeys meant that it was always going to be tough. Never the less the team arrived in good spirits and warmed up with a focus and intent that suggested a great game was on the way. All 15 players that took the field played fantastic Rugby with Alfie Broekhuizen having a fantastic game as Captain. Will Rouse was outstanding at Number 8, running with real purpose and scoring two great tries in the 1st half, Henry Docker and Jack Folden also had great games but these efforts did not prevent us losing 22-17. A focus on defence will ensure a better result this weekend. 12A Lost 10:19 It was a tough match against Barker at home. Despite losing on the scoreboard against Barker, we felt a great sense of pride. Knowing we had lost by a lot more last time, this time we worked more closely as a machine and functioned better as a team. We have a fantastic spirit between one another and have great respect for our coach Mr Grice. Through his communication and direction, he has helped us to know our roles as a true Cranbrook rugby team. James Olsen 12B Loss 27:37 On Saturday 30th July, the 12B’s played against Barker at Woollahra. We started off rather weakly in the first half because of lack of tackles but later on in the second half we caught up considerably with 5 tries

Page 21: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

to 0. Our improvement was due to our team’s decision to spread out better across the entire field and use lots of width to run up the wing. We also improved our tackling by spreading out and putting lots of pressure on to the opposition by staying up close to them and tackling whenever we had the chance. We have one more game left in the season and we aim to end on a high by using our width all the time and practising our tackling a lot more. Luke Sinden 11A 19:29 Loss After an excellent weeks training the boys were ready to take on Riverview, unfortunately we were not used to the tactics they used in kicking over the top every time off first and second phase, a couple of lucky bounces saw us go 2 tries down soon after kick off. We then conceded another 2 but this time due to some good handing and dropping off on our defensive responsibilities. After regrouping at half time, the boys came out fired up and played some of our best rugby of the season. Our forwards dominated to contact with some excellent running and breakdown work, setting the platform for tech back sit slightly deeper, with Stef Ferster going over for 2 nearly identical tries within 10 minutes of the 2nd half. From the kick off we then put together nearly 20 phases to slowly work our way up the field, with Hunter Hyde eventually crashing over to bring us within 1 score. Unfortunately as we once again put several phases together, and Stefan going close once again, we lost the turnover, Riverview then kicked again, our defense didn't reload quick enough and they went over in the corner to put the game out of reach. An excellent 2nd half though and we will take it through to our final run out at Waverley next week. 11B 5:46 Loss This week saw a clear improvement from the boys. Once again a game of two halves. The first half, Riverview dominated the field, but in the second half, the Cranbrook boys showed heart and determination in their defence. They also transferred the ball better across the back line. A try was scored towards the end, which gave the boys confidence to seal out the game with a strong finish. 10A 7:42 Loss After an exciting week of training that involved some inspiring coaching from the Waratahs and Australian Half Back Nick Phipps, the 10A’s were keen to show off their skills against a giant Shore outfit. The A’s were down on troops with four starting players out with sickness and injury. The boys put all their effort into the fixture, however the sheer size of the Shore forwards was too much to handle. Special mention must go to Edward Hambly, Theo Walsh and all of the B’s players who helped out. 10B 62:17 Win After a long break from rugby the 10B’s arrived eager for a win against a Shore side who had proved competitive in our last match up. After a slow start in which Shore scored first, we enjoyed a period of sustained pressure and dominant ball carries. This provided us with the front-foot ball needed to send Will Kimberley over for the first of glorious 3 tries that he scored in the first half alone. The boys showed huge improvement from their last game against Shore as they were putting their new found passing game to good use in order to get around the slower Shore defence, coupled with excellent support play to maintain possession at each breakdown led to the dominant performance shown by the boys. This big victory has provided great confidence going into our final game of the season against a strong Kings side.

Page 22: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

10C Loss 3-4 v Kings and 1-11 v Newington Two vastly different games as the results testify. Against Kings we were competitive. Players were supporting each other, some attempted to make tackles and we were genuinely unlucky not to have won or at least draw. Our second match however, was back to our worst. No one made an effort to tackle around the legs and ball security disappeared. Only two boys kept trying to rally some fightback and were commended for their efforts. 9A 40:30 Win The Cranbrook U9As played in a very competitive game of rugby on Saturday against Mosman Prep and scored near the final whistle to secure the win.

They were certainly made to work hard throughout the game with Mosman showing much tenacity at the breakdown. Some fine individual tries were scored but what was particularly pleasing was the ball retention.

Page 23: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

Cranbrook worked through several phases time and time again in order to take their try scoring opportunities.

They now need to become more savvy at the breakdown and listen to the referees calls as the penalty count against them was a little disappointing. The boys are very much looking forward to their final game against Kings on Saturday. 9B 55:25 Win The U9's played one of their more gutsy performances of the year against Mosman.

Page 24: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

There was a big improvement from the previous week at the breakdown and our low tackle focus was excellent. The boys scored some impressive team tries as well as some off the back of some individual brilliance.

We look forward to seeing the boys step it up again on the weekend as the season closes.

Trial Fixtures v Sydney Grammar 15B 17:22 Loss The weather looked good for the boys heading out against Grammar 15A but a quick shower spoiled it. The team were quick to make a mark by some good field position off some hard running forwards although Grammar managed to score the first try to put 7 points on the board.

Page 25: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

There were a few decent line breaks by Grammar but some good tackling by Anthony Kourembanas and some good chase down tackles by Xavier Zuccon were able to keep the score quite low.

With a few different positions played the boys started tackling a lot better and the intensity upped. Some quick thinking by Marlon Moseley at halfback put it to 7-17 grammar way. While we were utilising the forwards some good running by Oscar Pintaric on the wing put us over for another 7.

3 points down the team were eager for the line spending most of the second half in the attacking 22. Luckily for grammar the siren went and the boys went down 14-17. Jack Smith

Page 26: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

14A 19:10 Win On Monday after school the Cranbrook 14 A’s played Sydney Grammar at Hordern. We came into the game really confident and were showed by Grammar early in the game that it would be a competition. Grammar scored first and put us on the back foot. After a lucky break from Jayden we were put back in the game. Next Peter scored a brilliant individual try after an unlucky miskick by the grammar Kicker. We closed out the half with the score being 12-10 to us. Grammar were on top for most of the second half. In the dying minutes of the game Jayden McLachlan along with the help of Peter Masselos put Toby May in the corner for the match winner. The final result ended up being 19-10 to us. Ben Falla 13A 53:10 Win The 13As had a convincing win against a big Grammar team on Monday. The boys fought hard in in defence and attack for first half but did not manage to break the defensive line of Grammar.

With good hand the backs managed to shift the ball well to Maxim Zahra who provided the punch that the team needed. At half time the 13As were up. In the second half the boys really amped up their game running the Grammar team around and getting a lot of fast ball.

Page 27: st - Old Cranbrookians' Association · forward pack and a reshuffled backline, Cranbrook sought to extend their time in the winner's circle after defeating Barker at home earlier

Determined defence by Sam Olliver, good lines by Sam Nicholas and tackle busting runs by Maxim who scored 6 tries put the team through to a very convincing win that was played with skill and determination from all around the paddock. Freddie Walton
