OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE

CHRIST, KING OF ALL

On this, the final Sunday of the liturgical year, we cele-brate the solemnity of Christ the King. By con-cluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only king over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation.

At the end of time as we know it, Christ's work of restoring all things to unity and harmony with their Creator God will be com-pleted. This Sunday, when we claim Christ as both our Shepherd and our King, we recognize our own calling to participate in Christ's saving work by caring for those whom Jesus calls "the least ones" (Matthew 25:45). — Copyright (c) J. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Today we have a modern feast, less than a century old, and placed at the very end of the liturgical cycle of Sundays only in 1969. In 1925, the world was in a sorry state from the van-tage point of Pope Pius XI. The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI desig-nated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recog-nition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today's world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calen-dar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Epis-copal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. --Rev. SHARE YOUR JOY AT CHRISTMAS Catholic Charities’ Help a Family Project

Through the Help a Family at Christmas project, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark (CCAN) provides a

unique and personal opportunity for an individual, family, parish community, school and organization to help critically needy families in the Newark Archdio-cese who would not have Christmas without some outside support.

Catholic Charities staff in the four coun-ties submits eligible client family profiles to the CCAN Emer-gency Food Network that coordinates the annual project. These families are linked with a donor who receives a profile of the family situation, first names, ages, gifts and grocery store gift cards for their selected family ($300 value or a family of four). The donor is also responsible for delivering the gifts to the Catholic Charities program one week before Christmas.

For more information, please call 973-266-7966, the Catholic Charities Emergency Food Network. ________________________________________________

Christ, The King Sunday is Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday in Ordinary Time before Advent and the beginning of a new liturgical year. I thought that this celebration must date from the Middle Ages, but discovered recently Pope Pius XI added it in 1925. He in-tended it as a day to cele-brate and remember Christ’s kingship over all creation, as well as remind us that all humankind must submit to Christ’s rule. As you can imag-ine, it has, especially in re-cent years been a some-what controversial day among those Christians who consider the language of kingship outdated or oppressive. For many, the images of kings and king-doms conjure up thoughts of tyrants. But the kingship of Jesus takes on a very different form than does the kingship of earthly rul-ers. Jesus’ comes to us not as a great conquer-ing military leader who oppresses and abuses the conquered. Rather, he comes as the Prince of Peace, the One whose reign proclaims peace, jus-tice, liberation, and above all, service. Jesus turned the whole concept of lordship and king-ship on its head You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to become great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:42-45,

NAB,). Images of God, as Lord and King seem foreign in a democratic, individualistic society. But our all-powerful God, is also all-loving, and all-merciful. God’s heart aches to once more be in

a loving relationship with his creatures. This is what Christ’s kingship is all about. We must submit to Jesus as our Lord and King, but it is a submis-sion that paradoxically brings with it liberation, freedom from sin. Jesus knew the popular images of kings and lords and redefined them. In God’s resurrec-tion world, in order to be a ruler of all, Jesus must become a servant of all. Jesus demonstrated this servanthood in his life and miracles. Even the Incar-nation is an example of this: God the Son, King of all creation, humbled him-

self to become human, even sharing the ultimate fate of his captive subjects: death. Interestingly, most references to Jesus as king occur during the Passion story. The symbol of Christ’s kingship is not a crown but a cross. The Son of God became human and died a horrible death on the cross to release his sub-jects from captivity. The One who is the true king of our world made this ultimate sacrifice out of his deep and abiding love for the world, a world constantly in rebellion against him. Christ’s king-ship is not like a king with a jewel-encrusted crown in purple finery on a gold throne wielding an oppressive rod of iron. Rather, he is the cruci-fied God with a crown of thorns hanging half naked on a cross of shame to set us free from our bondage.
