Everyday Stewardship

As I get older, gifts on birthdays or at Christmas just don't seem that important to me. I love giving gifts, especially to my wife and children. I like to

find that gift that brings a tear to the eye or elicits a great surprise. But for myself, what I receive

does not seem like a big deal. It was different not so long ago. As a young adult, I loved to receive cool gadgets and tech toys. However, I can say I feel pretty satisfied now that I am more mature.

In fact, on Father's Day my oldest son was coming home from college and he asked what I wanted as a gift. He asked looking for a concrete gift sugges-

tion, preferably in his college student bank ac-count range. I immediately had an answer for him. I told him, "As long as you get home in time to go to Mass with me and the family, that is all I want." I just wanted to witness his faith being fed along

with the rest of us. For me, there could be no greater gift.

We hear every year the story of the Magi bringing rich gifts to honor Jesus. They were honoring this newborn King the only way they really knew. And,

yes, I believe that whatever they could have of-fered him would have been appreciated. But I

think it was the gift of themselves that mattered the most. They didn't send the gifts to him by

some form of courier. They traveled a far distance to be there in person. For what else could Jesus

really have asked?

What gifts do you have to offer Jesus? You could offer gifts of treasure or time. He would love those. But could you offer him your presence in prayer. Just spend time giving yourself over to him, for

what else could he really ask?

La Corresponsabilidad Diaria

A medida que me voy poniendo mayor los regalos de cumpleaños y de Navidad no me parecen ya

tan importantes. Me encanta hacer regalos, espe-cialmente a mi esposa e hijos. Me gusta encontrar el regalo que les provoque una lágrima de satis-

facción o les dé una sorpresa. Pero el recibir rega-los no me parece asunto importante. No hace mu-cho que eso era diferente. Cuando era un adulto joven me encantaba recibir artilugios artificiosos y

de tecnología. Sin embargo, puedo decir que ahora que tengo más madurez me siento bastante

satisfecho.

En efecto, el Día de los Padres mi hijo mayor venía de la universidad y me preguntó que regalo deseaba. Él quería que le dijera algo concreto co-mo sugerencia y preferiblemente dentro de lo que le permitiera su cuenta bancaria de estudiante. En seguida le di mi respuesta. Le dije: "Mientras que llegues a tiempo para ir a Misa conmigo y la famil-ia, eso es todo lo que quiero". Yo sólo quería que su fe se alimentara junto con la del resto de no-

sotros. Para mí no había mejor regalo.

Año tras año escuchamos la historia de los Reyes Magos, que traen regalos para agasajar a Jesús. Estaban honrando a este Rey recién nacido de la

única manera que ellos sabían hacerlo. Y creo que cualquier cosa que le hubiesen ofrecido

hubiera sido apreciada. Pero me parece que fue el regalo de sí mismos lo que tenía mayor valor.

Ellos no usaron ningún servicio de mensajería pa-ra enviarle los regalos, sino que hicieron una larga

trayectoria para presentarse en persona. ¿Qué más hubiera podido pedir Jesús?

¿Qué regalos puedes ofrecerle a Jesús? Puedes ofrecerle regalos monetarios o de tu tiempo. A él le encantarían. Pero también podrías ofrecerle tu presencia mediante la oración. Sólo entrégate en

la oración, ¿qué más pudiera pedir él?
