PRAYER TO ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL
St. Michael the Archangel
defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God
rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast
into hell Satan and all the evil
spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 12:32-48
“Of those who have much, much is expected”
Johnny Manziel had a successful career as quarterback of the Texas A&M football team. He assumed the moniker of “Johnny Football.” Despite reports of erratic behavior on and off the
field, Manziel was the 22nd pick in 2014 NFL Draft by the Browns. At Cleveland he did not perform well on the field. Off the field his conduct was irrational, and possibly illegal. In less
than two years he was released by the Browns. In June of 2016 his father stated, “He is a druggie . . . I hate to say it but I hope he goes to jail.” Much was expected of Johnny Manziel. He
had the opportunity to be a positive role model for young people. He had much but chose not to be all that God had given him the ability to be. When Jesus said “Of those who have much,
much is expected” he was challenging his disciples, and us, NOT to do like Manziel. God has given us much. Are we aware of all that God has given us? Have we used all that God gave us
to the best of our ability? What have we chosen to do with it? Can we do better?

First reading, (Wisdom 18: 6-9) Second reading, (Hebrew 11: 1-2, 8-19) In the Gospel (Luke 12:32-48)
Theme: Living With Uncertainty
Most people nowadays have been on a plane. Before the flight gets underway one of the attend-ants says something like this: “We’d like your at-tention for a few moments while we show you some of the safety features of this aircraft.” The attendant then shows you how to fasten the seatbelt, and advises you to keep it fastened during the flight. You are told the number and location of the emer-gency exits and how, in the event of a sudden loss of cabin pres-sure an individual oxygen mask will be lowered in front of you. You are told that under your seat there is a life jacket for use in the event of having to ditch into the ocean. The idea behind all this is to help the passengers to be prepared for the unexpected. But few pay any attention to what the attendant is saying, if anything, it serves only to further un-nerve the nerves. In the Gospel today, Jesus gives us some instructions re-garding the flight of life - a flight in which all of us are involved. He tells us to be prepared for the unexpected. “You also must be prepared, for at any hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. (Luke 12:40) Like faithful servants we should keep ourselves in a state of readiness/preparedness. Not in fear, but in trust and hope. Life can be taken away from us in the twin-kling of an eye. However, the brevity and fragility of life bring home to us how precious is the treasure we carry in earthen vessels. (2 Corinthians 4:7) Jesus was aware of the uncertainty of life. His parable stresses the fact that death can come at any moment. It isn’t God trying to catch us unawares like a thief breaking into a house. (Luke 12:39). That would be unthinkable. Death, not God, is the thief that robs us of life. The uncertainty of life should not prevent us from enjoy-ing life in the present. All of us would like to be able to end our lives with our plans carried out and our work done. But we don’t know if we will have that chance. What we do have is an opportunity to be faithful to our responsibilities and commit-ments on a daily basis, like the faithful servants Jesus spoke about. Then we can go forward into the unknown like Abra-ham did, trusting in God’s gracious and loving care. Once upon a time there was a Court Jester who for many years had helped to amuse the king and the royal court. But then he com-mitted an indiscretion and was sentenced to death. Before the sentence was carried out the king summoned him and said to him, “In view of the many happy moments you gave me over the years, I will allow you to choose the method by which you are to die.” The Jester thought for a moment and then replied, “Your Majesty, if it’s all right by you, I choose to die by old age.” The king was so amused at his answer that he granted him his request. Most of us would make the same choice. But we don’t know if we will get it. We are servants of the Lord and of one another. Blessed are those servants who are faithful and responsible. (Luke 12:48) The faithful servant doesn’t fear the masters return. He/She welcomes it. Anytime is a bad time for the unfaithful servant. Any-time is a good time for the faithful servant. Dear friends in Christ, let us put things right today, so that death will be a graduation day for the good Christian - not examination day.
Dear friends let us have the right priorities in mind and contin-ue to have a generous heat. Amen
Happy Sunday to you all!
